she’s scrutinising him as always.
“well, well,” he mockingly taunts. “look who’s here.” zhiming is already squirming in joonki’s hold. he hears him faintly calling out for his mother and who’s joonki to keep him away? he sets zhiming to the ground and watches as the young boy waddles towards his mother. “you’re an hour late.”
Her heart hammering in her chest, Nyx runs towards little Zhiming, meeting him halfway. In an instant, she scoops him up into her arms, picking him up and holding him tight, pressing kisses into his hair.
“Mommy’s so sorry she’s late,” she says over and over, kissing every square inch of little Zhiming that she can. “Mommy promises it’ll never happen again.”
She continues pressing little kisses to the small boy in her arms until he starts to squirm, clearly tired of the all the affection that seemingly has no end. Readjusting her hold on the boy, Nyx lets him nestle his little head against her shoulder and neck, clearly tired from both his swim lesson and the previous series of events. Pressing one more quick kiss to his head and a “go to sleep baby, mommy’s here now”, she turns her attention, finally to the bright eyed man with a mischevious smirk on his face.
“Joonki,” she begins, irritation clear on her face, “It was a mistake, and it won’t happen again. You of all people should know how much I care about Zhiming. I’m tired and stressed and I’m in no mood to deal with your flirting right now, okay?”
Letting out a huff, she checks on the small boy in her arms, making sure he hasn’t been disturbed by the small alceration. Joonki is nothing more than her son’s swimming instructor. He has no right to tell her what she should or should not be doing in regards to her son. Nyx isn’t even sure if Joonki, besides in an aquatic setting, even has any experience with taking care of children. But, a small voice in the back of her mind says, he took care of Zhiming when you couldn’t. He rose to the occasion when you couldn’t.
Sitting back down on the bench, she lets out a sigh, biting her lip and beginning to speak with a small voice, “Look I....” she trails off, unsure of what to say. She looks up at him, a mix of relief and regret on her face. “Thank you for looking out for him. I’ve been working late hours lately, and between work and taking care of him, I haven’t had much time to sleep. I know it’s a shit excuse and I know I should be doing better as his mother but... I messed up.”
Sighing once more, she leans against the wall the bench was propped up against, gently rubbing the sleeping boy’s back, “Zhiming means the world to me. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I had lost him.”
