lowkey i think a lot of people don’t understand how shane loves hockey despite all its faults. as someone who danced for my whole life at this point, dance can have a pretty bad culture with race and gender diversity and sexuality from a similar way compared to hockey and as a dancer you literally just have to weigh how much you love it against how much it hurts you. the people who stick with it just love it so much more than it hurts them, and that’s who shane is. acting like he doesn’t understand the ways that hockey beats people (especially people like him) down is ignoring why he prioritizes it as much as he does. there has to be some threshold where it’s clear that it’s hurting him more than he loves it, and from my reading it’s when he realizes that it’s not just his own hurt, but also ilya’s hurt
