I always find fics where Colin is super well endowed amusing. It just shows the writers bias and wish fulfillment in their writing. Which is totally their prerogative, and the fics can still be well written and enjoyable, but I just can’t help but roll my eyes because it’s just so transparent. There are many very talented writers, often they know the characters better than the show runner, but stuff like that does take me out of it for a bit, when reading a fic, that or when the act like Colin is a sex god, which just isn’t believable when played by LN (who had to turn to 20 YO’s). When reading a fic I imagine someone else as Colin.

Without taking away from the talent and work involved in writing a fic, the majority is just a pity party for Penelope where she is made to say verbatim how she doesn't deserve the Greek god that is Colin and her "ugly" self should feel fortunate for it. Nowhere in the book or show is Penelope characterised as such, also don't get me started on how certain Colin fans gleefully put Penelope through the ringer and humiliation rituals in fics because her show counterpart is a woman who is empowered and exercises her autonomy which is the anti thesis of tradwife which they despise while using Marina as a tool to play out their mean girl fantasies.

My biggest issue with the way Penelope is written in fics is how often she’s self-conscious about her body or other characters make comments about her body or she’s described primarily with attributes of her body.

That’s not part of the television character of Penelope at all. I understand there was some of that in the books but it’s fair to assume most people are writing based on the tv character.

man, i have sooooo many thoughts about this but i always feel a bit guilty about it because the writers are doing it for fun and for free, so i try not to judge and just close the tab and move on...

more recently ive noticed how penelope is completely devoid of sense of humor in fics. she's just so boring and whiny and "woe is me"... i feel like this characterization completely clashes with her actual character... her sense of humor and wit are what made her whistledown. penelope is FUNNY, she has personality!!!!!! so why do they always make her this extremely basic white girl with no sense of humor who thinks she doesnt deserve the ~ super hot incredibly amazing rich colin. it pisses me off so much lmao.

Oh yes, there's def fatphobia towards Nic but when her costar is called a bad actor or ugly isn't one of those times. His fans like to make it a group project though. But hey, can't force people to recognize non-existent charm and charisma, can you? See people might not like the character Penelope but they do like Nicola. The audience definitely resonated with Nicola's acting more, which is evidenced by the way she has more than twice the followers he has, and how she's the only one with legit awards recognition and still being namedropped by publications as an important character in Bridgerton to this day. So what do his fans do? Every time he's called ugly or something, they act like people are fatphobic towards Pen/Nic instead of accepting their fav truly is unattractive and unwatchable to a great many. They're even unhappy she doesn't mention him in interviews now and talks about her bf instead. It's why they hate Jake so much and make her out to be heartbroken over LN when it's obvious she's never had any romantic inclinations over the least intellectually stimulating man ever.

Polin was only as popular as it was because of Nicola. She had the mass appeal and charisma and people (the GA) fell in love with her. Now I’m not denying LN has fans, he definitely has a group of fans, but if wasn’t paired with Nicola he would be long forgotten. Meanwhile, I think Colin could have been played by many other actors and Polin would be just as popular or more so. I truly believe this.
