You receive a cheque for a $10,000. Your instructions are to cash it, keep your $5,000 allowance then send the excess money elsewhere. At the bank you’ll have to fill in a foreign currency form with a tiny box that asks if you want the bank to negotiate it for you, or send it for collection. You won’t notice this.

What this means is you have the option to wait 6 weeks to get the money, or get it within 7 days. Obviously, you’ll probably go for 7 days. This is a mistake.

In 7 days, $10,000 will appear in your account. This happens because the bank contact the foreign bank, check there’s $10,000 in the account, then YOUR bank front you the money. You send the excess $5,000 on to wherever Daddy tells you. Daddy never speaks to you again but you have $5,000 right? Wrong. 5 weeks after getting that $10,000, you check your balance. -$10,000. How can that be? The bank finally got around to taking the money from the foreign account, which had already been emptied. Leaving you with $10,000 of debt.
