bobbin's family owns a large chain of apothecaries.
her father who was pureblood met her mother, a muggleborn, while they were at hogwarts and then they got married and had melinda. growing up, melinda had a pretty normal childhood. her mother and father did what they could to give her the best life, while also instilling the proper qualities and the best work ethic they could into your daughter. not only did they hope for the best for her, but they knew with melinda being their own child, that she would one day take over the business.
melinda has always been naturally curious. she loved learning and reading. and while she knows her path in life has been carved out by her parents, contrary to what they may believe, potions and herbology are not her favorite subject. sure, she excels in those subjects but her true love is in charms and divinations.
"we don't have to talk, but i'm not leaving you either." susan knew more about loss than most. being alone was fine at first, but too long sitting in solitude became a detriment. even if in silence, it was best to have someone to distract you the second you needed it. especially one who understood your pain.
melinda immediately felt a wave a guilt wash over her after hearing her friend's determination. she admired susan for a lot of reasons but the main one was how good of a friend she was. melinda lost her father, but susan has lost so much more. "sorry. how are you doing?" it was a weak apology, and an even weaker attempt to a conversation but she knew susan deserved better than to be pushed away like that.
"are you talking to me?" daphne had been busy catching up on potions work when she heard the other speak. She gave a quick look around and wondered if she was too loud when she was reciting her notes as she made sure they were right. "my bad."
melinda looked back up from her cauldron to eye the slytherin. she couldn't quite tell if the blonde was messing with her or being sincere but either way, she wasn't interested, not today. "yeah... I am, greengrass. you should probably also focus on your work. it'll be useful one day." then again, melinda wasn't quite sure if the greengrass sisters would need to work after hogwarts but that was really none of her business..

"if you don't mind, i'd really prefer to just focus on my work..." she finally spoke up to the person across from her. she had struggled to leave her mother after the holidays but her mother insisted she go back. melinda was using all of her energy to get through her classes and assignments, trying her best to keep it there rather than thinking of anything else.
melinda had been going through the motions since she heard the news. first it felt like a lie, a sick joke that someone was playing but then her father never came home. after that, she was trying her best to remove herself from her body because all she knew was she needed to be there for her mother, be strong. it was only now that she was alone, in one of her family's apothecaries that she started to feel it all. her mother decided to temporarily close the apothecaries for the holidays and they had just said their final good-byes. it was just her and her mother as they didn't want to risk any kind of attention. in this moment it all felt so very real. just as she felt her first of many tears run down her cheeks, her knees gave and she was sliding down the side of the table and crumbling onto the ground.

"grab the molasses from the cabinet? second in on the left, should be behind the honey." perhaps a few days late to be making gingerbread, but in susan's eyes it was a winter cookie and thus not tied strictly to christmas. that, and her last batch had been commandeered by her aunt for an office party. she'd been left with only three, which was certainly less than ideal for her favorite winter treat. so when melinda had come to visit, she'd quickly put her friend to work assisting her in the kitchen.
"okay." she nodded her head while speaking in almost singing the word, taking a moment to look in the direction she was given. the holidays were her favorite time of the year, so when she was put to work helping make cookies, melinda agreed with avidity. "so, not to ask what might be obvious here but... cookie decorating contest later maybe?" the question was joined by a smile while she handed the molasses to the redhead.
