I have been so run down lately. I’m not really one to subscribe to astrology, but one of my co-workers told me my mars sign was in some kind of moon Pluto something. I don’t know, but she said it was going to pass soon and I’m hoping she was right. No matter how much I sleep, I’m still exhausted.

You haven’t been sleeping? Are you okay? Anything I should be worried about? I mean, I can’t say I know much about astrology either. But I hope that passes soon for you.

Melissa: Had been re-reading her message for what seemed like hours. There was no questioning who it was from, but she didn't think he would be so bold about it. Chris was her first true love, she thought that they would end up together. She spent a week in bed crying after they broke up. She thought she was over it- she thought he was over it. But the events of Halloween kept replaying in her head. Melissa needed the one person in her life she could really trust. She got in her car and drove to Chylers apartment, going as quickly as she could to get her door. Melissa knocked on the door and bounced on her feet, waiting for the other woman to answer.

“I have no doubt that it’s nice. You were always so exhausted after the planning that you didn’t really have time to enjoy the party. Plus, your busy season is coming up, so it must be nice to enjoy the party before having to plan them all,” Chris commented, remembering how busy she would get this time of year as the holidays came up. Back when he was just working at a restaurant before going away to culinary school, he had plenty of time to help her out the best that he could. He couldn’t help but wonder if Henry helped her out too. Maybe he did a better job. The guy basically looked like Superman. 

“Honestly, I think you could take her. Especially in that costume. She was dressed as a sexy cat, so you definitely have the upper hand in that battle,” Chris said with a small, but honest laugh. Remembering the memory fondly, Chris’ face lit up and he laughed. “Yes! She even spoke like her. I’m still completely convinced the character was based off of her,” he laughed again, falling back into old habits. Chris cleared his throat again and looked down at the ground as he let silence fall over. “Well.. I guess I should leave you to it then. She’s probably gone by now,” he said, a bit sadly. He knew that if he didn’t leave now, he was probably going to do or say something that he would regret or would make her life more complicated. “It was good to see you, I hope you enjoy the party,” he commented, turning to leave. Putting his hand on the door knob, he tried to turn it before realizing that it was locked. “It seems to be… stuck? Locked?”

“That’s true.” Melissa said with a fond smile. When she was dating Chris, she had gone from being a girl friday to starting her own business. It was crazy to think that it wasn’t that long ago but still felt like a life time away. It was herjob  to make sure a bride wasn’t stressed her wedding day so it was nice to be at a party without a clipboard in hand. She loved it when Chris used to help, she would always ask him for help. Henry seemed so far away from the idea of marriage, she rarely spoke about her work at home with him. 

Melissa laugh at his words. “Rapunzel can take one anyone. Espically when she has her frying pan at hand. If only I could remember where I put that.” She teased. tapping her finger to her temple. “It had to be- this woman was like she just stepped out of the movie!” Melissa said, unable to stop her laughter at the memory. Melissa pushed her lips together when he said he was going to leave. She had to fight everything in her body to ask him to stay but that wouldn’t be fair. “Worse comes to worse just push her in here and I can have a little word.” She laughed. Melissas eyebrows came together in confusion when Chris couldn’t open the door. “What?” She asked, going over to the door and trying to give it a jma herself. “Oh my god, it is.” She said. “Hello!” She shouted, banging on the door. “Anyone there!?”

Chris couldn’t help but automatically smile when Melissa did. She had such an infectious and familiar smile that just felt like home to him. Once he realized that he was smiling, he slowly let it fall, realizing that smile was no longer his home anymore, but some other guys. “That’s understandable. The party is… a lot. I feel like everyone in town is here. A lot more people showed up than I thought would. I guess no one can really resist the curiosity,” Chris responded with a nod, making small talk to try his best to keep things from being awkward- at least as much as was possible. 

“I don’t know about that… just one girl who can’t take no for an answer here and there,” he laughed nervously, lifting an arm up to the back of his head to scratch at his hair. “Clearly I’m not super great with the ladies since I’m still single and I lost–,” Chris cleared his throat and dropped the sentence, realizing what he was about to say. “Oh, well, thank you,” he said, gripping the edges of each side of his cape. Though it keeps getting caught on things so I think Edna Mode was on to something.”

Melissa could see the different emotions going through his face. It broke her heart. She used to be able to talk to him without saying a word, reading him like a book. She pushed her lips together, not saying anything about it and looked away for a moment, playing with the ends of her hair. “Right?” Melissa agreed, looking back at him. “I guess it was pretty spooky. And I always like going to a party I didn’t plan.” She chuckled. Melissa hated how awkward it felt. She was in love with Chris at one point, she thought they would be together forever. It hurt acting like strangers. 

“Want me to fight her?” Melissa teased, holding her fists up in the air. She snapped up, looking at him as he cut himself off. She couldn’t believe Chris hadn’t met anyone yet. She knew he deserved to be with someone good, someone who would treat him right. It was what he deserved. “Oh my god.” Melissa laughed. “Do you remember when we went to that log cabin and the woman who owed it it looked exactly like her?” She laughed at the memory.

Chris jumped startled at the sudden voice that appeared behind him. He turned around to see Melissa and he put his hand on his chest as he tried to catch his breath after the fright jolt in his body. “Melissa, jeez, you scared the hell out of me. I didn’t know anyone else was in here,” he said, adding a bit of a laugh at himself. Once the adrenaline had passed, he looked at her, suddenly realizing the situation they were in. While he had talked to her a bit, he hadn’t actually really seen her in person in a long time. 

“Yeah, I’m okay,” he said, pursing his lips together a bit and looking over his shoulder at the door. “I was being cornered by some girl that I couldn’t seem to shake,” he stated with a half-hearted chuckle, hand going to scratch the back of his head. “Uh, how are you? Are you doing alright? You look… great.” 

“Sorry.” Melissa said, she couldn’t help the smile on her face at seeing Chris. It hit her that it had been a while since they actually saw him. The had spoken via text a few times but truthfully, the thought of him seeing him would just cause her heartbreak all over again. “Sorry, I just needed a second away from the party.” She smiled softly. Melissa could easily get overworked in these types of situations, normally at a party she was the planner and had her work to focus on but this was something else. 

“Ah, still being chased by the ladies.” She attempted to joke. “I’m glad you are okay.” She said, looking from the floor to him. “Yeah, yeah. I’m good.” She said, tucking her hair behind her ear. “Thanks. The wig was kinda heavy.” Melissa said. “You look great too. I like the cape.” She added, shifting her weight from foot to foot, not sure if she should stay or go.

Chris hadn’t originally planned on going to this mansion party, but it was a last minute decision, hence the generic superhero costume that Christopher had found on a picked over costume aisle at the local store. Still, he had to admit that it was pretty good quality and looked relatively decent on him. Chris wasn’t entirely sure what he was expecting from the party, but his curiosity got the best of him when everyone in town seemed to be talking about it.  

Once he had arrived, Chris went directly for the drinks and got himself one. Then he wandered until he found someone who was carrying hors d'oeuvre. Being a sous chef at one of the nicest restaurants in town had gotten him a pretty refined palate, so he hoped the food was good. While he was searching, he ran into a woman who came into the restaurant quite often. She seemed like she had a bit to drink and was suddenly coming onto him pretty intensely. Every time that Chris tried to excuse himself, she wasn’t seeming to get the hint. Finally when she got distracted by something, he managed to get away and duck into the nearest room to hide in. It happened to be a bedroom. 

“If I just wait here for a few minutes, she’ll probably be gone, right?” Chris spoke to himself quietly, sitting on the edge of the bed and laying back.

Anyone who knew Melissa knew that she loved to throw herself into anything with a theme, so when Halloween came around, she was always excited to plan her costume. She spent hours looking for all the perfect pieces for the costume and she felt good about how it all came together. She was even more excited when she had a party to attend. 

What she hadn’t thought off was how heavy the wig would be. Melissa got out of the party room and tried to find somewhere she could take it off. Wondering around she found a bed room which had a vanity. Perfect, she thought to herself. She sat down at the desk and took off the wig, taking out the pin curls and running her hand through her hair, maybe she could be Rapunzel after her hair got cut. She then heard someone else come into the room, her eyes widen when she saw who it was. 

“Chris?” She asked when he lay down on the bed. “Are you okay?”
