I don't know much about composition, I've never attempted it myself. I never knew how. I like this article because it promotes creativity and instruction to student composers. It gives me a better idea on how to approach the task at hand: composition. Starting a composition is the hardest part. This is a great read that will hopefully help music educators understand the steps to teaching composition.
Summer Band!
Over the summer, students are not in school and often times stray away from their instruments as they are caught up in work or just having fun in the sun. Adults on the other hand, don't get to play in an ensemble everyday like students do. That's why community and summer bands are so cool.
I play in a summer band every year for the City of Waukegan, Illinois. We rehearse every Monday night and perform concerts every Tuesday evening on the beach at our band pavilion. I love the variety of people I get to play with and the change of atmosphere. Concerts are free to the public and we often sell hot dogs and burgers as people get to sit on their blankets and enjoy their evening.
These ensembles are great for student musicians and elders who enjoy playing their instrument. I find it especially important for those who have careers in something other then music. It allows them to keep music in their life and there instrument from molding in the basement.
I found this article interesting as it talks about the way technology is changing in music and how it can be used to the teachers benefit. With this generation of students I plan to be teaching, I hope to incorporate technology into my lesson plans often. Especially in more general music classes and to younger kids. I feel that it is important to keep playing in an ensemble the main focus. But, other classes can be set up to be focused on learning different music ideas through music.
Practicing
Practicing is a HUGE part of being a musician. Most people tend to find this tedious work and may not always enjoy it. You've had those days where you're sounding good and could play all day. Then.... there is every other day. Those are the days you need to push through and get work done. That's what my professor always tells me. Different practicing techniques can help strengthen you're embouchure and endurance. Practicing doesn't do you any good if you never warm up and only play solos. As a brass player, I always make sure I go through my daily warm ups: long tones, turn studies, lip flex abilities, and scales. This helps me prepare for what ever playing I have to do later that day. Good techniques to practice during your second secession of the day is melodious etudes, technical studies, and things along those lines. I typically take a short break after that, then work through solos or band excerpts. Breaking your practice into three secession is a great way to practice productively. Breaks are really important as they allow your lips to rest. They are muscles just like any other muscles you use when working out. I hope this advice will help you start to plan you're practice to get the most benefit.
I was never taught improvisation in high school and still haven't really been taught at the college level. I think improvisation is important to students to express their creativity as mentioned in the article. I think it naturally helps students develop musical techniques such as phrasing and dynamics. When playing music, I feel that is sometimes forgotten. Improvising allows the musician to express themselves.
I found this article from the Journal of Music Teacher Education. This article discusses the ways that the ensemble reacts to what you do visually and verbally as a conductor. I found it interesting how the author had examined the affects of each. Some are better than others in different situations. This is important for music educators and conductors to be aware of when trying to explain musical ideas to an ensemble.
Aaron Copland is a great American composer. He is famous for his classic and patriotic works. This is a link to his blog that shares a lot of information about his works and himself as a composer.
Methods Classes
Methods classes are where music education majors get to learn how to play all the other instruments. I actually like this class quite a bit, minus the fact that they are always at 8:00am. I think helps future music educators understand how to play the instrument themselves, and then understand how to teach it to others. Making music is all about problem solving. Teaching music is all about thinking on your feet. At the end of each methods class, you have to make a video of yourself teaching a beginner to play the instrument. This entails how to put the instrument together, how to make a sound, and how to play the first few notes.The real challenge in this is identifying their problems and correcting them to make progress. I feel most times these classes are kind of blown off because they are not many credit hours. Despite that, it is still one of the most important series of classes you will take especially if you're teaching beginners in your future. You have to start them off the right way or bad habits will create bad musicians. The skills leaned in theses classes will help music teachers create great musicians.
This is a topic that I mentioned in one of my CVL’s. Marching bands are an important aspect of the job description, especially in the high school setting. Yet, I have heard a million different perspectives on how they should be ran. Thus, you are getting my opinion whether you want it or not, but...
This is a great reflection my friend Aaron posted about marching bands. I just wanted to add my own experiences and thoughts. When I was in high school, marching bad was not optional. A lot of people hated it. They would get really mad that my director who would make us go outside during band some days and practice out on the fields. "It's hot", most would say... "I'm going to ruin my hair" or "I'm wearing flip flops." I feel that most kids complained because it was manadatory. But, they also got a P.E. credit... I like that Aaron talks about how it's important to make it fun for the audience and for your band. As a high school, we never competed. It took us all year to learn just one show. But, as our band program continues to grow, who knows where the future will take us. Marching band should be something the players choose to do. It's whatever you make of the experiences and the attitude you have towards hard work. The accomplishments can be rewarding and the memories can last a life time.
I found this article on General Music Today and it was actually posted by my professor for the class that I am making this tumblr for. He talks about music technology and how Lil Wayne became famous. He mentions how hip hop is something that students should be taught as it is very expressive. It was a really interesting read and gives me different ideas for incorporating students music in the classroom, music technology, and expression

Being a Music Major
There are many majors one can chose from when deciding what career they want to peruse. There are so many choices. Most majors involve, studying, reading, labs, and some hands on projects. But, being a music major is different. Some people don't understand the challenges we face every day. Our schedule's consist of weird requirements and skill based classes. It's not all about studying and getting an A, most of the time I don't need to study. I practice. When I came to college, I knew I wanted to major in music and I knew I would be challenged. But, what I didn't know was that my first week here I would be told I had to memorize and sing a pentatonic scales in front of my class for a quiz grade. I was traumatized. But, I made it through. Music majors get graded on ability to perform, prepare music, sing, listen, play in tune, and for showing up at concerts. But, we also have classes we need to study for and hours upon hours of practicing. It's a strange concept for most to grasp. It's weird, challenging, and rewarding. I hope this gives some interested a better interpretation of what this major is all about.
What is music?
Music is defined as vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. I remember taking my into to music class last semester and how i was interested in the different topics we discussed. The class was very opinion based and strange. Our first week of class we talked about "What is music?" My professor put different slides up on the projector and asked us to write down if we thought each was music or not. This created a lot of discussion and debate as he played strange examples of "songs", nature sounds, and images. I came to conclude from this lecture that everyone has their own definition on "music". What you may think music is, could be the opposite of someone else around the world. I didn't know at the time what I personally thought was considered music to me. And that definition for me changes everyday. I haven't been able to decide, it's all about your interpretation. What is YOUR definition of music?
This article talks about the ways to get young children involved in concerts. I think this is cool because it could spark an interest in children at such young age. Everyone should be able to participate in music of some sort through out their life. They don't have to be professional. Music making is fun at every level, even if you're not that good.
I found this article really interesting. It talks about students who have disabilities, or referred to as differences, and how they should be accommodated to in the class room. It didn't talk about students who have major disabilities, but more of issues such as short attention span, behavior controlling, and restlessness. All have diagnosed names, but I don't find that so important. This article discusses great ways to deal with students with these problems and how to help them succeed as their teacher.
This article discusses the ways to teach different theories in music. I found it really helpful as it talks about how music teachers need to explain things differently to music students. They have to be flexible on their explanations so the ideas are comprehended by their students. I feel this is a really important for music educators to acquire.

This is a great lesson plan for learning how to add rhythms. Knowing what each note is worth is really important when reading music. This activity is aimed for younger kids, but you can make it more complicated by adding dotted and tripplet figures into the game. To make sure the kids that are not participating in that round are still learning and playing attention, you can have them do the work on their own and write it down for a grade.
