An interruption to my regular programming of sunsets: I've arrived in Nice. The mood here is understandably sombre, grief as heavy as humidity in the air. It feels wrong that the sun is still shining & the water still blue, while the city is almost deserted and shopfronts closed. It's hard not to feel closer to this tragedy than other acts of terror - like those yesterday, like those that will come tomorrow, in countries where the ever-rising death toll becomes a mere number - when you're on the ground. And while doesn't do to dwell on what might have been, it does unsettle me how close I was to being here on Bastille Day. But I wasn't here; and this is unfortunately not the only act of violence from extremists - unrepresentative of the countries they come from - that will occur this month. Or this week. Or on any given day. I don't pray, and so can't pray for peace. But I do hope. And I hope that people smarter and better informed than me are #furtheringglobaldevelopmentforpeace, and #investingineducationworldwideforpeace, and #developingcommunityoutreachprogramsforpeace. As an individual I don't know if there's much I can do, except to keep informed. To support leaders who put human rights above polls and retaining power. To recognise that what happens politically in the rest of the world - whether the US or Syria - affects us all, and so we can't ignore very real threats (including those from extremists in the western world, like Trump). To not hate. To love radically. To... Well, if you have any other ideas, let me know.
