Arrangement of Pages
Before we thought of arranging the pages from the battery life’s fullest to the least full... but then we forgot until now that the pages are set. I tried to rearrange it but through many uninstallations and installations, I failed. The perfect collection NOW that I think about it would be to mimic the scrolling i.e. arrange the pages from most battery to least, from 5:28 slowly to 5:29 (with many pages showing 5:28 and some pages at the end 5:29). We always wanted to present at 5:28 but...
Now let’s walk through the page production process.
Zoe experimented with multiple people on one page, but Karla and I prefer the simpler one QR code per person one person per page format.
At first there was a border, but we decided to simplify the look which didn’t simplify the process. The page was resized to 15 x 26.68, which was twice the size of the original screenshots, making it easier for the screenshots to fit.
Zoe made the QR code without white backgrounds so that the person’s facial expression can be seen more easily. The code can be scanned with a wechat scanner, or a Line chat scanner, Snapchat is useless (although I still like it). Or you can download a QR code scanner. One of the above images show the QR code being scanned by WeChat scanner. The QR codes are rearranged by Karla so that there is an alternation between the videos. 4 times the private video QR code appears, and 2 times of the other videos.
Note: I was asleep during most of the page production. Documentation was derived from Facebook group chat, ‘BROs’.
IMPORTANT: The idea of exploring live streaming and using QR codes was conceived by Karla and Zoe.

Karla found the above videos and generated QR codes for them. One of them is in Spanish and the others in English. The first one listed is half neatly and half messily filmed (like). The second one is neatly filmed, very typical and sentimental (sigh). The last one is filmed messily (love).
They all show meaningful acts people can be doing instead of watching or making live streams (not saying that live streams can’t be meaningful): demonstration, community project, resuing a dog (respectively). This contrast was inspired by Martha Rosler’s collection of collage works: ‘Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful’.
Note: I suggested this contrast. Below is Rosler’s ‘The Gray Drape’.
Now’s the time to run through the private video debate.
Karla: There’s no point in having the video on private if they are going to watch it anyway.
Zoe: It’ll be easier for the audience to understand if the video is public because the video shows a watcher of live streams scrolling through live streams.
Me: (I was going to log into my YouTube account so other people can watch it in class byt then I decided that it’ll be better if no-one in class, apart from me can access it because the scroller is scrolling in their private time, whydo you want to see what he/she does anyway). Also the scroller wants to remain relatively private (at least for me) while the broadcaster is public. Most importantly, I didn’t want the screen scrolling to be on my personal YouTube because I feel uncomfortable about it.
The video is staying private. Then we got into another problem. The QR code for the video generated by Karla could not be saved by Zoe. So I suggested using the snipping tool, snipping the image and then saving it. It worked.
I wrote the copyright page, but accidentally accidentally I sent Karla and Zoe the unedited version... so it is not published by Bros but by Now. It’s still alright. There’s no fancy meaning behind the copyright page anyway because we reads the copyright page. All there is to say is that printing the publication is a waste of rainforest because you’ll most likely only flip through it once.
Karla is obviously better at making covers than I am. The QR code pattern makes the whole document more unified. Unified under the QR code. For some reason the first three cover pages remind me of police case files. Maybe it’s the black and white lines... Dedicated to ___ Eaters happened because we didn’t know what Eater we wanted to dedicate this publication to. So I said that it’ll be more fun if the dedication was left as ‘Dedicated to ___ Eaters’. The segmented screenshot of us is kind of a modern impressionism. The different nows we experience even though the present is the same time. We all experience the present differently (because of our past and our nature). So if you think about a group photo that way. It is crazy that we can get a relatively neutral photo from the perspective of a camera.
The link was inserted by transferring the image to microsoft word and adding a text box with the link.
Software: InDesign, Microsoft Word.
P.S: I heard someone say, “look serious”, that’s way I look so serious in the photo.
Later, my experiments resulted in 3 cover pages. I wasn’t really think... I was bored so I decided to make a cover page of some sort. The ‘now’ is half hidden, but ‘published’ is fully visible. Of course that’s because the ‘now’, what we are doing now cannot be seen by others, unless we pubilsh what we are doing now.
The Japanese greeting was just a tab in the insert section of Word 2016. There was only Japanese inserts avaible which I thought was weird.
While I was filming the private scrolling video, Zoe was busy screenshotting. Some of them came out blurry which is fine, as it suggests movement. A lot of nows can pass in one movement?
Note: the time is 5:28 as well :)
Filmed the scrolling of boredom on az screen recorder. Didn't know that the recorder recorded sound so I was talking to my dad which gives the scroller character (accidentally). The scrolling is boring at first but it gets addictive. Also, also live streams are public. The viewer still wants their privacy (at least this scroller/ viewer). So the video is private and you can't watch it (will be shown in class).
We decided to base our publication around live feeds instead because photos of the same now at different places in the world are more easily accessed in live.me (for example) and live feeds are more of something that is becoming popular now and is relatively new. The title of our publication will be 'Now Published', making a bit of a paradox. The screenshots themselves are no longer representations of now as now has already passed and the live feed has moved on. After the screenshots are published, they are only representations of past 'now's. With published in past tense, the 'now'ness is illustrated as having passed. With published as the second word of the title, stress is being placed on the action. The passing of time, or the death of now is an action, and only an action can capture/ freeze the present now. Paradoxically again, the screenshots are captured and preserved 'now'. So by taking photos or recordings or screenshots we freeze 'now'? Karla and Zoe are very interested in social critique of those who do live feends and those who watch it. Most people watching are bored people. However it is also possible that the person watching is a social commentator, journalist, psychologist, teacher. Side note, does having a job title give the person more meaning in life? This moves our discussion of now to the discussion of wasting the now. Anyway I came up with the idea of involving ourselves in this social experiment. We took a live feed on live.me, which can be found on Zoe's account, in class. There were around 35 viewers and 120 likes. I too live streamed (can see if you type in navy dodo in the live.me search bar) myself doing homework. To understand someone it's best to become them right? Bwahahaah We took a screenshot of our live feed which will be the cover photo with a hidden link to the world meter of deaths and diseases (for contrast). There will be a copyright page with a dedication on the same page. Only the cover and copyright page will have borders, the next pages are solely screenshots of people's feeds (the same time will be shown on Zoe's phone bar). The text in these pages will be of Zoe's comments in the live feed (screenshotted with the live feed). The people's faces will be covered by QR codes. There will be one dominate (recurring very often) QR code to indicate the sameness of the people (they often do the same things, pose similarly, similar makeup, clothes, only gender differences I guess) and that something has eaten their faces (Zoe's idea). Karla will generate the QR codes, and there will be three different videos in total. 1 video will be created/ selected by each team member. Note: unification of photos is based on each person's style (or lack of) (consumed by the now fashion), and no filters. So we'll simply not include anyone who has filtered themselves. Hahahahaha that sounds mean.
Zoe took screenshots of people streaming live in Live.me, and gave them a glitchy surreal look.
The video was thought to be something like the one above. Filmed at different times, but viewed at the same time.
Similar to the foodporn below, we want to explore the mainstream (popular now) and use the mediums in a not mainstream fashion.
The song is Kaela Kimurako’s ‘Ring a Ding Dong’ (2011), an old popular Japanese song. I thought it’ll be fun to parody an old song instead of the current popular songs like what most people do.
Note: I decided to film horizontally on acapella, thus the video orientation.
Note: The first time I listened to the original song was last year..
Hiding a letter in each photo, and when there’s enough photos the compiled letters will take you to a video.
We thought of having our friends from different parts of the world all take a photo of their food, all at 7pm Australia time. Exploring how time is different in different zones but we still experience the same now.
Note: the hidden letters are ones from my last name. (not well hidden) And Zoe collected photos of food too.
