“That’s stupid. Anyways, what have you been up to?”
“A little bit of everything, don’t really know what time I came home last night. But the fact that I did, calls that a win, don’t you think?”
““ – honestly, there are loads of things going on in my mind,” Druella admitted. She’d been thinking about switching wards for a while now and felt that she needed to get a conversation or two in with Melody before she could truly put in for a change. “I actually just wanted to ask you something. I mean, I know you don’t know me well and I’m sure you’ve already got a nurse, but I was wondering if you needed more assistance down here?” She didn’t want to get into full detail about the situation. Grayson had already witnessed it and she wasn’t comfortable talking about it. “I love children and I’d really love to work with you. I hardly think I’ll get to switch to the nursery.”
Melody’s eyebrow shot up at the words that were coming out of Druella. The nurse she had been working with had been there for years but with taking on more patients that she could honestly handle she was willing to take all the help she could get at that point. “I’ve heard nothing but good things from the other doctors, so if you want to come to peds, I’m perfectly fine with it. “ She took a good look at the girl sensing some form a hesitation but didn’t want to push her to why such a desperate change. “ How about this, we do a week trial, you like it you can stay on this floor. I know it’s not for everyone but I think you will do well here”
“That’s a tricky question,” Mathias sounded in response, setting his brush aside. “Considering my four year old daughter has been laid to rest, my wife has gone back to her old drug habits and I’ve recently moved back to to a town that I left for a very good reason,” He frowned, shaking his head. “I’m just peachy.”
Melody hated his tone; it hurt her to hear him say the words. Her eyes flew down to the ground, picking at her cuticle line, for her to be able to feel something, something that felt like pain, when in truth she had been numb since the day he left. “I’m sorry I asked.” She wasn’t sure whether to stay there and have this back and forth between them or just leave him be.
adriennedomke:
Adrienne raised her hands in mock surrender, laughing as she did. “I’ll throw the pamphlets out, I swear,” she conceded. “She’s cooperative, so I can promise the extra work load won’t be the straw that broke the camel’s back. –Thank you so much. Seriously. She’s nine.”
She couldn’t help but laugh at her fake surrender. “I’m sure she’s a doll. Yeah, of course I’ll take her on. Anything major that I should know about? It’s really no problem at all I probably would have said yes either way.”
Gilly Marquez has and always shall be a hedonist: a perennial pleasure-seeker, always on the prowl for self-satisfaction even if it meant a terrible expense in line for others. Selfishness was imbued in his heart like an untreatable cancer, attempts to alleviate his depravity something that many military psychotherapists had failed. Very few had made it past the man’s manufactured exterior featuring tons of self-ego and bravado (beneath it, an overly fragile and sensitive organ beating underneath his ribcage, rusty from years of dereliction), and Dr. Melody Mitchell was not exempt from this rule. Still, he would be lying if he didn’t feel a jolt through his chest – a little animalistic, perhaps – every time they saw each other across hospital hallways or cafeteria, even the occasional wards. In her presence hazy memories of their time together constantly resurfaced: trysts in between shifts; his hands lost in the tendrils of blonde locks, his lips planted firmly on the crook of her neck before settling on her crimson lips… a portrait of faux intimacy.
“Name one time I’ve ever been soft, Mitchell, I dare you.” He reciprocated the woman’s teasing tone, noting that not once in that sentence did her eyes set on his. She remembers. Of course. Damned if he wasn’t anything but a respectable and unforgettable fuck. “I’ll certainly try, but I can’t promise anything. You know I always love a challenge, mi Querida.” Unable to resist, he approached her with slow, languid movements and tucked a stray lock of hair behind Melody’s ear, his thumb settling in its place a moment too long. “Well, you’re not taking back the compliment so I – and my ego – will take it.” Her next words were a perfect opportunity for a candid comment to pounce heedlessly, and so with a lopsided smirk he added: “You’ve already stroked other parts of me, woman, very well I might add. So while I don’t need help for stroking my ego, which is doing well enough as it is, I can’t say that I would mind you doing so.”
She was never stupid enough to fall for someone like Gilly. She knew from the moment their lips first touched what they were; nothing more than just a mixture of satisfying a carnal itch and whoever could get the final word in. Her breath hitched as soon as barely there touch pushed back her strand of hair, making the ache between her legs grow ever more present. It was the feeling of knowing that they could get caught at any moment that kept things exciting for her; the feeling of his strong hands pushing up her dress before the door was even locked behind them that made her keep coming back for more. He was her dirty little secret that no one knew about and she kept it that way, even if she was merely another notch on his belt.
She took a second to compose herself before speaking. “I can certainly remember a couple times after we were done. You really should talk to a doctor about that, with you getting older and everything. ” Her voice was low but her smirk remained the same, the need to take him down a peg or tow was almost too strong for her to restrain herself. His words brought a chill down her spine, the way they just fell from his lips made her imagine how they would sound close to her ear. This was the control he still had over her even after it had ended; he knew how to work her and how to make her almost putty in his hands. Her head cocked to the side, rubbing the tension knot on her neck slowly as she continued. “Do you want me to take it back?” His comments made it impossible not to scoff in amusement. Her eyes remained on his features, taking them in as slyly as she possibly could. “Oh is that so?” Her pen tapped away on her fingertips keeping her busy from not pulling him into whatever free room that she could find right then and there.
It had been a decent amount of time since Rohan had been to Montreal last but he was able to navigate through the bustling city with ease. And as a traveler by heart the thought of getting lost didn’t allude him from taking on the streets without a map or GPS to guide him. This also prevented Rohan from being confined to tourist traps and subjecting himself to the cliche Instagram photo-ops. After a long day of traveling by cab, train, and even by foot Rohan settled himself down a park bench. ❛ Contrary to popular belief, ice cream from the crappiest vans are always the best. ❜ He took a bite of his ice cream after peeling the paper from the cone. ❛ You know, I’d like to give you a try but sharing isn’t exactly one of my strong suits. ❜
Melody had been enjoying her only day off watching the small children play on the jungle gym and smiling a couple who recognized her from the hospital. “That sounds like the start of the bad serial killer movie don’t you think?” She quickly replied with a small chuckle as the angle of her smile shot up. Her dark sunglasses were covering her bright eyes from the harsh Montreal sun. “I’ll just sit here and long for ice cream, I guess.”
If ever my services are needed – you know where to find me. I would just then suggest refusing service. I’ve done it before – it’s a way of business. I wouldn’t let anybody talk rudely to any of my employees, so your supervisor would probably understand.
“If she comes at me again, I promise you’ll be the first one I call. The thing is that I get way too attached to the kid and having a horrific isn’t her fault.— How is business going by the way? And I need to know that if I ever show up drunk at your shop you will turn me away and not let come back until I make a sober decision”
“Yes, the absolute worst type of vegans. Hey, hey, I like Dr. Phil, okay? It’s entertainment. And it’s amazing when he lays into someone who is just being a real asshole.” They laughed, too, smiling at the other woman. “Oh, that’s probably gonna be tempting, but I’ll try to stick with one.”
“The only time it’s appropriate to watch Dr. Phil is when you’re making fun of the people on there. Pretty sure the last episode I watched this lady was sending close to a million dollars to someone in Africa?” Melody picked up her coffee that she was half heartedly sipping on. “Have you thought of names or just waiting for it hit you when you see your new cat?”
“Yeah, I had to, or my mom or my cousin would kick my ass.” Luna smirked. “Lucy is a pretty commonplace name, I bet she had to by Lucy whatever the initial of her last name was because there was Lucy W. and Lucy R. and Lucy G.” They laughed. “Seriously? Which one? I don’t even use those, I don’t need them.” They sighed and rolled their eyes. “I’m pretty sure he does know, he won’t talk about it with me but the police were a little more forthcoming. I don’t know about charges, but he hasn’t yet so I don’t know if he will or not. Probably not.”
“I think when she graduated there was another girl with the same name in her class and she threw a fit because she wanted to be in the only Lucy, that’s my darling middle sister for you.” Her eyes grew remembering all the antics she was known for. “Lux which is not terrible I probably wouldn’t have noticed it until the mom mentioned it. “Well, let me know if you need anything okay? Both of you, and I do mean anything. ”
The had been something special about Melody the moment he had sat his mind to her back in high school. Something about the way she simply did things, the way she spoke and had acted around him had been captivating – and that just didn’t happen to him. After all, she had kept his interest going like no other girl on that school, and if that end of the school year hadn’t hit them, and he hadn’t had to live with the knowledge that they were both heading their own way, he had a feeling he would have stayed longer. He couldn’t openly say they would have lasted, no, but those six months could easily have stacked on. The not so subtile compliment made him break eye contact with her, finally, feeling the back of his neck heat up – glad Hayley didn’t understand the concept behind the word itself. Instead, Hayley glared at Melody with confused knitted eyebrows as she tried to piece together the question. “She got all the good things from me, of course”, Simon cut in with a joke, wanting to find his balance again. The comment made the little girl snort and shake her head swiftly. “NO. You got it from ME.” Putting her little nose in the air, she stuck out her tongue at her father and awaited further instructions from the doctor. It was a needed laugh. “She’s a little cocky as you can see, can’t say for sure who she got that from though.” A half-assed eyeroll followed close behind, hinting at himself again. “Why would they be mad about that? If you can become a doctor you settle for doctor. I’m still surprised I even got into a course at all.” It wasn’t as if his dad hadn’t pulled a few strings to assure him a spot. “Do you… do you like it, though? I guess that’s the key question.” For a while his eyes flickered back at Hayley, wanting to avoid staring at Melody for too long. It made him uneasy.
His eyes were still the same ones she had fallen for all those years ago. She remember her friends telling her how lucky she was for being with someone like Simon and for lasting as long as they did, the feeling of being chosen followed her around the hallways when they would walk hand in hand. She had accepted their break up as soon as it happened, but seeing him again made the thought of how differently her life might have been if they had just tried to make it work someway. Her eyes made contact with the little girl in between them as she her own eyes brows at hers. “Oh there will never be a doubt that you are related to this guy right here. But don’t worry you’re much prettier than he is.” She couldn’t help but laugh along; the Meadows charm was obviously hereditary. Her hands pulled the stethoscope from her ears and she started writing down her notes. “Do you remember how Luc was in high school? Wild child at heart and always a bit reckless, that hasn’t changed. She wants to travel to India and do the whole eat pray love thing and my parents want her to finish her degree so it mostly her that is mad at me for it and Emi just follows her lead.” His last question made her stop writing; she didn’t know what to say. It was a double edged sword, she put everything into her work, she had to not become stir crazy but it was like a shot to the chest every time a little blonde girl with brown eyes came in with their mother around the age of five or six. “I do like it; it pays the bills and looks really nice on business card.” Her words stayed in the same tone, she had trained herself to say enough times for it to actually sound real. “How is she eating? How is her sleeping schedule?” The blonde said getting back to the topic at hand, his daughter.
“Oh well.” Winking, he shrugged. “The curse of a resting nice-face.” He thought for half a second. “Is that a thing in English? The opposite of resting bitchface?”
Her eyes narrowed on him slightly, still smiling at him. “Did you just wink at me Erik? I think it is a thing. Do random people come up to you and say hi? I think I might have the opposite actually.”
“Didn’t FDR have that? I mean, it’s not like my name is Xanadu or anything, you’d think Luna would be in more popular demand, but no.” They pouted, and then sighed when Melody spoke about Phoenix. “Yeah, he’s fine, he’s just Mopey and Grumpy and about twelve other dumbass dwarves.”
“Yeah he did, look who paid attention at school.” She said teasing Luna. “Anytime we tried to find those, it was always Lucy who was the only one that had her name on there, they really should consider making more names that the generic ones. I had one patient named after an instagram filter. Does he know who did it or is he going to press charges or anything like that?”
gus-ellner:
He chuckled. “No, not normally. I just got spooked, I guess. Creepy people looking like they’re following me… it doesn’t happen often but when it feels like someone’s on your tail or watching everything you do? It’s terrifying.” He shivered.
Melody looked down trying to hide her laugh. “I guess that makes sense… sort of. How long do you think he was following you? And why would he want your organs of all people?”
“I’m actually here to show you my pamphlets on why you shouldn’t vaccinate your child,” Adrienne announced jokingly with a small laugh. “I’m, uh— actually, I’m here to see if you’re accepting new patients. I moved my daughter and I to town a couple months ago, and finding a new pediatrician is always so daunting. I’ve heard nothing but good things about your practice, though.”
Melody looked at her with a straight face pointing at the door. “Get out.” The blonde said before laughing. “I’m taking over Dr. Fowler’s patients as well as my own and I technically shouldn’t but what’s one more patient right? And if I save you from that headache it’s a win-win for everyone. I would love to Adrienne, it’s no problem at all. How old is your daughter?”
dancerariadne:
“God, good thing I’m here,” Ariadne laughed, looking at Melody. “I take it she makes regular appearances around here?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “I’m just here to say hi, distract you,” she told her laughing.
“I’m eternally thankful for a least such a small break from her. I swear she is here more often than some of the doctors.” Melody rolled her neck in frustration. “Thank you for coming, I think that last conversation I had was about pink elephants so I just need some adult conversations. How are you darling?”
darcynixon:
“What do you want to bet she’s also one of those vegans who isn’t, like, cool about being vegan but instead shows you PETA videos every time you try to eat a burger?” Darcy laughed. “All cats are brats, it’s part of the species. But yeah, I think so, too. I’ll be looking into animal shelters when I get home.”
“You mean the worst type of vegans? She probably is and she probably also sits at home watching reruns of Dr. Phil, while her kids are waiting for her to pick them up.” Melody just shook her head laughing, for some reason this back and forth was helping her get her frustration out. “Tell me how it goes and if you need any help deciding. Just like don’t come home with all of them”
