There was a botanist who worked in SE Asia during the 30s and 40s who had a trained monkey that would collect flowers from treetops etc when so directed. Once, they were out collecting at the botanist spotted some interesting flowers, growing on a vine that was hanging down into a ravine. He ordered his monkey to climb down and get them, and it just looked at him blankly. He repeated the order, and the monkey just reached out, grabbed the vine, and hauled it up like a rope. He wrote he’d never been made to feel like such a complete fool.

And you just know that right around the corner that crow got into his faded orange VW Kombi van with the surfboards strapped on top and hit the beach.

This crow is 100% fucking around for no reason other than to fuck around. Birds have two main gaits depending on where they live - they put one foot in front of the other if they live on the ground, or they hop if they live in the trees. Crows live on the ground, and thus walk. They have no reason to hop like this, and they aren’t wired or built to move like this naturally. They might hop to quickly avoid danger that’s very limited, like a car tire coming at them, or to get up onto the curb, but this sort of motion has no purpose other than being fun.

Meet Curie, the American Crow! She’s so smart and spoiled rotten! There are never too many toys for her. Things she enjoys include watching us making enrichment for all the birbs and yelling at us to give her more. She’s very demanding!

Playful behavior

In recent years, biologists have recognized that birds engage in play. Juvenile Common Ravens are among the most playful of bird species. They have been observed to slide down snowbanks, apparently purely for fun. They even engage in games with other species, such as playing catch-me-if-you-can with wolves, otters and dogs.[77] Common Ravens are known for spectacular aerobatic displays, such as flying in loops or interlocking talons with each other in flight.[78][79]

They are also one of only a few wild animals who make their own toys. They have been observed breaking off twigs to play with socially.[80]
