Dear Tumblr
@staff | @supportÂ
You have decided to change Tumblr. To try and make it âpureâ and âsafeâ for underage people, in order to strive towards a better, positive future.
For some reason, you also have this odd, misguided belief that what you are doing is going to double your current user-base by the end of next year.
Unlikely.
Speaking quite honestly, a good 75% of users on Tumblr are above the legal age in most countries to view and produce NSFW content, if that is what they would like to do. While there are many websites that do allow NSFW content, Tumblr is one of the few websites in which the community and content, where people can express themselves and work safely, is (mostly) positive .
For a long time, the user-base has been asking, again and again, for you workers behind Tumblr to do something about the millions of bots that advertise and provide pornographic content through blogs and messages.
The user-base has also been asking for you workers to do something about the Nazi-Supporters, Hate and Harassment blogs, and child porn content that has been uncovered and reported by members of this community.
Moving on to more current events.
The Apple store has recently kicked Tumblr off its list of available apps. Why? Because there is âToo Much Nsfw contentâ, and; âChild Pornographyâ.
The very thing thing that us, the userbase, have been warning you about, and requesting that you do something about; only to be ignored in most cases.
And now, to the main point of this large post:Â
Tumblr has decided to ban all Not-Safe-For-Work (NSFW) content. The definition of what Tumblr defines as âAdult Contentâ and exceptions, will be shown below using a screenshot of their own help-desk page.
There are a few flaws with this. See, Tumblr has implemented a âbotâ of its own, which does quite little, actually, save for flare already irritated tempers, flagging everything from an innocent picture of a peach, to Tumblrâs own announcement stating that they will no longer allow NSFW content.
Even more irritating than their blatant disregard for their community, is the fact that we are still being plagued by porn bots. I have blocked over twelve within the last two days myself, across various blogs I have. Their algorithm is also not removing these blogs that it has been flagging, only hiding them from view, which means that those problematic blogs still exist; but now only a few handfuls of sick-minded individuals can still see that which should be terminated by this purge, rather than the works of people who have done nothing themselves to warrant having to suffer this site-wide damage.
Yes, I say damage, because this decision that Tumblr and its new owner have made, has tarnished what made Tumblr what it was to people.Â
A safe haven. Now, people across the website are fleeing to other places entirely, leaving links for people to find them at, taking their activity away from the website which could have handled this all much better to begin with if it had just removed the content that landed it in hot water in the first place.
And before you, the people behind tumblr, try to say something, like:
âWe are doing this because we care about our users,â
Donât.
You. Have. Literally. Ruined. Lives.Â
I have watched many of my friends abandon this website. Because now, they will be in financial crisis, and will end up banned if they sell their art here.
Because now, there is no sex-positive place where they can find others of the same mindset to talk to, to come to an understanding of their own selves.
Because on the 17âČth, hundreds of sex workers who had a safe, reliable platform with which they could do their business, will placed in danger once again on the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.
Because now, I myself, no longer feel safe on this website, where I was surrounded by friends, and could role-play, post art or fanfiction, and talk about my sexuality, hopes and dreams, all because of your new âruleâ.
I came here in 2011, and Iâve seen many âgreat decisionsâ during my stay here. Iâll still be here after the 17âČth, while most of Tumblr abandons ship.Â
Not because I support any of what youâve done, but because I am here to stay, if only to judge every post and action you make alienating those who put faith in you, until the awaited day when this website is well and truly âdeadâ.
