TENNESSEE SUPREME COURT
The Tennessee Supreme Court is the state’s court of last resort. The five Supreme Court justices may accept appeals of civil and criminal cases from lower state courts. They also interpret the laws and constitutions of Tennessee and the United States. The Supreme Court may assume jurisdiction over undecided cases in the Court of Appeals or Court of Criminal Appeals when there is special need for an expedited decision. Read more here.
The Federal Court System: 94 District Courts, 13 Circuit Courts and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Tennessee is in the 6th Judicial Circuit. There are three United States District Courts located in Tennessee: Western Tennessee (Memphis), Middle Tennessee (Nashville) and Eastern Tennessee (Knoxville).
A district court is the lower court of the federal court system - similar to a trial court in the state court system. A circuit court is the appellate (middle) court in the federal system. The 6th Judicial Circuit Court of Appeals is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Because Tennessee is in the 6th Judicial Circuit, Cincinnati, Ohio is where all appeals from Tennessee District Courts are heard.
The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest court of the federal system.
Per the Constitution, the President of the United States nominates all federal judges, inclusive of the Supreme Court justices, court of appeals judges, and district court judges. Then these nominations must be confirmed by the Senate.

EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW
The Supreme Court of the United State is the highest tribunal in the nation. Meaning it is the highest court, the final arbiter of the law. Arbiter is simply one appointed to judge or decide a disputed issue.
Almost every issue before SCOTUS is one involving the constitutionality of some issue to be decided with the need for clarification or, better yet, a legal interpretation of the Constitution as it applies to that issue.
SCOTUS acts as the guardian and interpreter of our Constitution. Our justices are charged with guarding its citizens seeking resolutions to all constitutional disputes that will protect Americans ensuring equal justice for all under the laws of our nation.
Therefore, our justices are tasked with judiciously discerning the laws when interpreting the Constitution. In ruling on the issues before them, they have a duty not to offend their charge of protecting and providing "equal justice under the law" specific to the constitutional rights and protections of all citizens provided for in our Constitution.

The Constitution vests the Supreme Court with the following power to hear certain cases before its court:
"The Judicial Power shall extend
to all Cases in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority,
to all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls;
to all Cases of admiralty and maritime Jurisdiction;
to Controversies to which the United States shall be a Party;
to Controversies between two or more States;
between a State and Citizens of another State;
between Citizens of different States;
between Citizens of the same State claiming Lands under Grants of different States, and
between a State, or the Citizens thereof, and foreign States, Citizens or Subjects."
