Hello everyone! Ben’s birthday is coming up on April 3rd, so it’s time for our yearly birthday project again! If you’re new here please take a moment to scroll through the page and look at everyone’s wonderful entries from previous years.
The rules:
- Wish Ben a happy birthday! Write a letter, take a picture, record a video, draw fanart, whatever you want, but please keep it respectful! Be sure to sign with your name (you’d be suprised how often people forget).

Here we are, at the end of our fourth successful year of Mendelweek celebrations (in a row!), so give yourself another round of applause!!! To all of the Homies who make up our Mendo Fam, everything was possible thanks to you as always, for our fourth consecutive year that was filled with amazing, wonderful, talented creative works!!! We had 38 new works and our follower count has also increased to 312 fans of Ben Mendelsohn now!!! Let’s keep the number going as high as we can get it, the more the merrier, everyone is welcome here! \O/
I just wanted to take the time to say Thank You to every single one of you who made a video or a gifset or your personal artwork or an edit of any kind or wrote something from the heart, all of them are just as important and beautiful and full of hard work and we all thank you for sharing these, without all of you there wouldn’t be an event really! Kudos to everyone and cheers!!!

Roles I’d like to see him play: a romantic lead who gets the woman in the end without too much angst, a detective based on several Scandinavian crime novel series, Shakespeare (I think he’d make a great Iago in “Othello”), some sort of good guy in a sci-fi/fantasy flick or TV series

The kitteh in Mississippi Grind, Flerken-Goose in Captain Marvel (Talos does mega-foreshadowing, eh?), the bit about Mendo stopping filming of Adore to let a cat cross the street, Anders adopting the turtle in The Land of Steady Habits, Robin and his little dogs in The Place Beyond the Pines, that celebration scene with Springsteen playing after the bank robbery. And the pictures of him in the puppy booth at 2018 TIFF as well as the pictures of him and the floofy white dog!

In 2019, The Guardian published a piece written by his ex, Emma Forrest, titled “Notes from a Hollywood Divorce”. Separate from being Mendo’s ex, I don’t particularly care for Emma Forrest, I’ve read her books and articles and while I admire her history of being a young female music writer, I feel like her writing is fairly self serving, rendolent of Elizabeth Wurtzel. I also don’t think that “Untogether” is a great movie (aside from, of course Martin).
The article and stories are not particularly sweet or flattering, but it gives a tiny peek into personal details about an otherwise private man. It also is a great illustration about how passion and chemistry doesn’t always translate into a happy marriage. There’s a bit in the article about writing the character of Martin specifically for Mendo that I thinks perfectly sums up how I see him in my own head.
“I wrote the role of Martin for Ben, to showcase his guileless, joyful side, the half of him that is Iggy Pop just wanting to be your dog.”
The article shares aspects of his personality, bits about their relationship, their chemistry and ultimately why their marriage didn’t work. It also talks about what it’s like directing your ex in the midst of a divorce and speaks about putting your differences aside for the sake of work and that speaks volumes about the maturity of both of them.
There’s also another quote from Emma, and I can’t find it now, but it’s basically his reaction to her about the article. The gist of it is that he told her “I read it, I don’t like parts of it, but I told you that I’d support you in writing it”. That in and of itself gives another sliver of his private thoughts.
I suppose the moral of the story is that you can stan/ship/obsess about someone, but the reality is, they are human, warts and all. AND the best part of adoring someone famous from afar is you can disregard their not so attractive bits. Or you can attribute the article to sour grapes from an ex, though I don’t think that was the purpose of the article.

One of the many stories I love about Ben is when he paid for a ‘disabled bal’ (I’m not sure about the correct terms, sorry if it’s not right). I can’t find any information about this but I’m not writing about it, specifically.
I’m not gonna lie, thinking of only one story about Ben is very hard. I could have talked about all the times he proposed coffee to a journalist or how he takes time to talk and listen when there is no time for this. Those gestures show how big his heart is. How he pays attention, how generous he seems to be. Admiring someone can be disappointing for many reasons but what I love about Ben is that he never posed as somebody else. He is real, authentic and I guess it must be hard to learn to know him. But it would be even harder to be disappointed by him.
