Mendelweek Day 6 - Favorite Friendship - Ben & Joel
“I love working with actors who seem to be on another level. Ben’s one of those guys. He’s incredibly dangerous…Ben is amazing.”
Mendelweek Day 3: Most underrated role
John from Sample People! Such an interesting character and he picked this role during the time when he was moving away from ‘larrikin’/everyman Australian character roles.
Plus, that look...on point.

Mendelweek Day 3: Most Underrated Role
Fraser - Black Sea (2014)
Okay, so, first off I guess it depends on how you determine “Underrated” - is it because he doesn’t get enough recognition for the role (awards and such) or... “Guys, ya’ll be sleeping on this Mendo.” If I was going to take the first definition then my argument would be all of them, because I think Ben doesn’t get half the recognition he deserves for the effort and work he actually puts in. We’ll instead tackle the latter-!
So, it took me a bit of time to finally settle with Fraser. And I choose him for several reasons! One being when I first watched Black Sea I didn’t particularly like him, at all - at least until the diving scene, then I 180′d SO hard. Therefore I understand why people maybe don’t like him as a character, and wouldn’t want to give him a second chance - but I think you should. Also I watched a review of the movie that basically said he was “inconsistent” and his character was “full of plot holes” and it got me thinking... Isn’t that the point of Fraser’s character? They don’t call him a psychopath for no reason, after all.
Every time I rewatch I keep discovering more about him - particularly that he stims, he at least tries to calm down and unwind all that feral energy (right before stabbing someone sure, but he’s not perfect!), his attitude towards / protection of Tobin, and also his emotional range (if that’s the right word). I really find Fraser an interesting character in that you can write him off so easily as an angry psycho - but then you get moments, like when he’s diving, when he’s really just a complete sweetheart. And think about it, the two times he really went off the rails he was protecting someone and then was manipulated. 🤷♀️ Sure, he’s an idiot and does some reckless and stupid things, but I feel like Fraser is treated like that’s all he is and he deserves better. One day I want to do a character analysis of him because I just find him so interesting... TL;DR - If you don’t like him, or you’ve only watched once - you’re missing out, because there’s so much to explore. Give Fraser a second shot. He certainly deserves you to!
