i feel like yellow's self-harming/self-punishing tendencies are a reflection of asgore's self-loathing tendencies. asgore got caught up in such a cycle of guilt for something that happened that wasn't really his fault, and his actions trying to prove his innocence to himself ended up driving away everyone close to him. yellow is kinda the same thing just taken to its extreme, where he tries to badly hurt himself over everything he does and convinces himself that he's a bad person
