"That's understandable," Grace said. "I know he can't risk contacting us, but if he does, it'll be you. Will you let me know if he does? Just so we know he's still alive?"
Grace had always been worried about what would happen when all of this came to an end. She'd been thinking about the whole saga more and more. It was unsettling from top to bottom. The revelation of the Blake Association made her second guess everything.
It had also made her revisit old feelings about Craig. He hadn't had the tattoo of the Blake Association. So he was just a follower of Red John's.
But there were so many people they'd interacted with over the years who were part of the Blake Association. And Red John himself.
"You know, I always thought that Red John was going to be someone less...normal. You know? McAllister didn't really have any charm; he wasn't like Bret Stiles or commanding like Bertram or attractive like Haffner."
Jane has done this before. And in the past, he's come back. But in the past, he had to chase Red John, to find his closure. Now that he's gotten it... well, Lisbon wants to believe she was more than just a convenient means to an end for him. She also can't put her life on hold for him. While an extreme case, incidents like this are why she finds herself reluctant to get too emotionally invested in any one person on her team -- that doesn't mean she doesn't care. It just means she can't put herself in a vulnerable position to be exploited.
Still, she shares Van Pelt's concern. Plenty of people have wanted Jane dead in a ditch for less. "Of course. If I hear anything, I'll let you know as soon as it's safe to," Teresa nods. He did kill someone, that's no secret. And after the Timothy Carter incident... Jane's good at his magic tricks but she doubts he can pull an encore.
"What? You thought Haffner was attractive?" Lisbon can't help but hide the small snort of amusement that escapes her at the thought. Was that part of the criteria for a serial killer? "Sorry, I don't mean -- anyways." She waves a hand to dispel her next admission.
"That's the thing, I guess. He was just normal enough to ingrain himself everywhere. With so many people. Yeah, Red John was a person... but he also needed to be an idea. Something people could identify with, I guess. Still, he was a sick, sick person. I wish he'd gotten to see proper justice, but... I know I wasn't going to stop Jane."
"No pop quiz. I never looked. I didn't feel the need to. JJ couldn't take the risk that I did know, and it was clearly personal. Why would I pry?"
He gave a shrug and went to get his tea.
"What did you find out?"
He was curious. Maybe it was the way that JJ LaRoche had been on his mind since the Haibach siblings had targeted the former CBI members. While he knew that Haibach would have gotten to LaRoche eventually, he still felt a twinge of guilt at calling in his favor and getting JJ involved.
And, well. He did like getting answers. The dead were dead. He wouldn't offend JJ anymore.
Now, Lisbon knows Jane is a man of his word -- when he chooses to use his words. For the most part, he takes the boundaries of those he respects very seriously. J.J. was certainly one such man, and while he had his... friction with the CBI team during their tenure together, Lisbon and Jane both knew he was trustworthy. Even if they didn't always trust him with every detail of every case. So she believes him when he says he didn't ever pry. But she can't believe he didn't have a guess.
Finding out about the Tupperware... It shook her a little. These good and upright officers she had worked with for years having secrets of their own. Teresa always wanted to believe she was an open book. Maybe a bit on the dry and technical side, but an open book nonetheless. Their colleagues of the CBI and those of the FBI feel like separate lifetimes.
"It... it was more than personal," Lisbon says, clearing her throat. Even the thought of telling Jane now brings the shocking scene back to her mind. "I went to talk with that man -- he lived with his mother then... Jane, someone cut out the rapist's tongue the day before the court hearing. And they never found it, or who. Do you really think J.J. could do that?"
"Thanks, Boss. I appreciate it."
She knew that Lisbon was no longer actually her boss. The FBI had dissolved the CBI because of the corruption within the Bureau, and they were doing a full sweep. Which was fine. Part of her was unsure about this limbo they'd found themselves in, but part of her felt that it was fitting that they weren't in the same space now that Red John was gone. Now that Jane was gone.
"It's been a lot. Still just kind of thinking about what the future might hold. I miss Jane, too."
She always hoped that their little team, their little family would be enough. But she should have known better, should have known that Patrick Jane would run. That he had fulfilled his purpose, so he was moving on. She hoped that he might come back, though.
"What about you? Have you heard from Jane?"
She knew that he'd be too smart, too careful. If he was going to contact any of them, it wouldn't be this quickly.
Lisbon pushes a breath through her nose at Van Pelt's comment -- it's as much of a laugh as she can manage with a heavy heart. She's not their boss anymore, and likely wouldn't be again. And while there would always be justice to mete out, with their quest for Red John finished and Jane in the wind... she isn't sure what that path forward looks like next.
"Grace, you have a long, bright future ahead in whatever direction you want to take it. And if you ever need a letter of endorsement or recommendation, I'll gladly give it," she says, taking a sip of her own coffee.
Lisbon knows she can't force the team to stay together, especially given the FBI's swift and decisive dissolution of the CBI. She wants to believe they were close enough, her and Grace and Cho and Rigsby -- and even Jane, though she has her fears and doubts now -- that their trust and friendship would withstand the inconvenience of no longer being in the same bullpen day in and day out... But Teresa has always struggled with allowing herself that vulnerability in front of them. Especially as the boss, she had to comport herself with a certain degree of professionalism.
She clears her throat at the question. "I, uh... haven't yet," Lisbon admits, trying to swallow her disappointment at the admission. "But I haven't given up hope yet. It's not the first time Jane has pulled a disappearing act, but... I have to let him come to me, if he's going to come at all. I just don't know if I can stand around waiting in the meantime."

"Did you ever...find out what was in the tupperware box?" Patrick asked.
He still didn't know for sure. He assumed that it was a body part. After what Grace had told them about what happened to LaRoche's mother, he was sure that JJ had gone after her attacker. He just did not feel the need to complete the picture himself, not when JJ was, sometimes strangely, his friend. Even if JJ thought he knew, he didn't need all of the details involved.
But it was a thought that had cropped up. So long had passed, and sometimes, he just longed for the familiar of their days at CBI. He was happy, settling back in after two years on the run. But he missed the team they had in Sacramento; he missed the facsimile of home.
(Or, rather, the very real home and family he'd made with them, but that he, to this day, could not allow himself to think was real.)
Even though he was no longer her charge, Patrick still found ways to surprise her, catch her off guard, as they worked their new jobs with the FBI. There was something somewhat refreshing watching all of the other hardworking (if a bit stuffy) agents get used to the oddities of Jane's particular, and particularly effective, methods of conducting himself. She liked to think herself immune to surprise by now.
But as Lisbon is preparing her coffee, his question truly stumbles her for a moment. It takes a few moments of visibly processing her surprise to even recall what Tupperware he could even be referring to. Was this a test? There was no way Jane didn't know -- or at least have some incredibly correct deduction.
"Oh, I... uh, wow, Patrick, that was years ago," she stammers, trying to recover some sense of a train of thought. Teresa had grappled with many emotions that day, realizing that someone she holds in such high regard could do something so... emotionally charged. Reckless. Illegal. But then again, she supposed that it did prepare her for the inevitability of the lengths Jane would go to stop Red John. The woman sips her coffee contemplatively before deciding it needs just a little bit more sugar. She fusses quietly over it before looking back at the waiting Jane.
"I... yeah, I did. Why, didn't you? Is this a pop quiz?"

It was one thing for Teresa to follow Patrick Jane into his quest for vengeance. As the Special Agent in Charge, she had a duty to her team, to Red John's victims, and to the justice system to pursue the serial killer and try to prevent his continued cruelty. And maybe it was foolish of her to believe there would come a point in all of this where she'd have him properly apprehended and tried by a jury of his peers -- but through years of dogged investigation, it was clear to her that Red John had no real peers. For better or worse. Perhaps Jane counted himself among that number, but... Lisbon didn't like to think in those terms.
What horrified her at the revelation of Sheriff McAllister's wicked secret was just how close they'd been to him without ever knowing. And worse still, how close they'd allowed the team -- and namely, Grace -- to the man without truly knowing. Sure, the plan had been Jane's, but Jane was Lisbon's responsibility. And so were Cho, Rigsby, and Van Pelt, as much as everyone was a competent agent and adult (Jane... included, mostly).
Grace, to her credit, was always open to Jane's plans. He'd rarely given himself reason to appear untrustworthy. But Teresa knew that the retrospect of a brush with death was not something to brush off lightly. That's why she'd asked Grace for coffee, in this period of unmoored limbo, Jane completely in the wind, unreachable. And as much as the senior agent hated being too vulnerable around her subordinates, this was a rather unprecedented matter for all of them.
"Hey, Grace. How are you holding up? Small question for a big situation, I know, but... I wanted to check in."
