Cards on the table. His, maybe, but she’d been peeking, hadn’t she? She hummed softly, draining the last of her glass before taking up for fork and toying with the food on her plate, lips pursed as she drifted from present conversation and into possible consequence of this moment.

“Forward is always suggestible.” She noted with a wry smirk to him. “As you said. We have business, work to do…” She could not encourage his advances in good conscious, but she could neither spurn him. Perchance a leap of faith was required, but faith– trust– that was the thing she lacked. “… and I am thankful for your honesty.”

In her mind, she toyed with the thought of what it might be like to kiss him before snuffing it out, shooing it away and returning to the task at hand; dinner.

“Were there other questions you wanted to ask?” She invited after she’d enjoyed a few more bites.

He thought for a moment, there had been something else there. It was slight, as if there was something more she’d wanted to say, but pushed it away. It didn’t matter. Not now. “I suppose,” he started, “that for now I know all I’ll need to. There’s more to this, but to ask more would be to pry into personal matters.”

After all, he’d done quite enough of that tonight as it was. There was still work ahead, he needed to think. “You said you’ve got a few tailored plans for capturing your target. Any ideas specifically? Or do I need not be party to it?” He said trying to change the direction of the conversation away from personal feelings.

She nodded, glad to be moving on to business. It was both rare and thrilling to have someone approach her for once... but at the same time, terrifying. In all honesty, she did not know how to conduct herself as of current-- the men in her life were toys she played with until they no longer interested her, and then left behind. Certainly he would serve that purpose well? And yet... no, no, it didn’t seem right. He was too unique to treat so casually.

He required more consideration than that.

She needed to think.

“Daphne, as I remember her, was a brilliant biologist, in possession of great strength, and a somewhat capable shapeshifter. She could imitate a number of animals, turn her fingers into simple tools as needed, but she never mastered looking like other humans-- because of that, we can be mostly secure in the knowledge that she cannot hide behind another face besides her own. That said...”

She frowned faintly. Her fork was abandoned as she leaned back in the booth, her hands tucking in her lap. “My plan to capture her revolves around incapacitating her quickly. Your assistance and resources would be quite handy in designing something that can contain her once she’s awake. I usually don’t ever hold on to people for more than a few hours-- she we will need for a couple of days.”

She blinked when she found her hands clasped– he was tense, her fault? Yes, anxiety, the winding of a spring. She tried to laugh it off, her face softening as she put on a more pleasant expression. “This is usually the part where it all goes wrong.” She confessed, as explanation for the dip in her mood. It was impossible, she supposed, to separate the fear from the expression of her true self.

“Ah, now that I know for certain, will I run? Or try to expose you, you mean? Will I shy from you for fear of what you will don’t me?” He looked deep into those emerald pools that we’re her eyes, then took one hand of hers between both of his. “This changes nothing. We still have work to do. If anything it helps me to better know how to work with you.”

Why did he hold her hand? He didn’t strike her as the type who was eager for physical contact, and yet these little touches– was it for comfort? She chose to believe it was. That he saw her unnerved and unsure, and decided to reach out in response to that. Under his gaze, her eyes glanced away, a flare of pink coloring her cheeks as she nodded along with his assessment. This wasn’t like their playful witticisms, half-flirting back and forth, where she could just roll with the punches and let him guess how much she meant it; the way he looked at her felt more personal, and she didn’t know how to deal with that.

Flustered, words left her, but she felt grateful all the same. A welling of warmth at being treated well, a warmth he might have perceived through the direct contact with her– it was always easier for empathic impulses to travel to another person’s brain by way of their own nervous system, after all.

“Thank you.” She added, wrestling her tongue into the words when she realized she’d not yet spoken.

He was surprised to feel……warm. Like an innate, and overpowering feeling of happiness, and……embarrassment? Was this her? She had looked away, but was that a hint of a blush he had seen? “You’re welocme Ari.” He said quietly. “I never knew… Is this how you show your feelings?” He asked curious. “It’s, pleasant. Extraordinary.”

She snapped a look to him, and realized she hadn’t been holding herself back as she usually did– no, he’d gone and embarrassed her, and she’d forgotten how to speak. Quickly, she mentally pulled back, flustered as she stole back her hand. “I-It’s… I didn’t mean… I’m not supposed to…”

What was she talking about? He already knew. There wasn’t any disgust or fear in him. Quite the contrary; he was curious, marveling- almost.

“It… comes more naturally to me than speaking.” She finally said. “I didn’t mean to… I usually keep it held back. Blending in. Pretending I’m… one of you. You could imagine how quickly my world would crumble if everyone around me started feeling happy when I did, or angry, or sad. People would notice, rather quickly.” There was sadness in that. In not being allowed to be herself.

Slowly, she put her hand back on the table. Her own curiosity bringing her back to where she’d pulled away on reflex. It had felt rather nice to simply… be herself for a moment. “Careful, Edward… I might begin your interest is more than strictly professional.” As if she hadn’t already assumed as much.

“Well, I’d hate to be vague” he smiled. He had figured much of what she had said. If she was able to do more than just take emotion, but to signal with it. To….speak, with it. People would indeed become afraid of her. “It must get lonely” he whispered. “Hiding who you are from people. That’s…..something I’ve known most of my life.” He rested his hand gingerly on hers. He didn’t want her to pull back, but wouldn’t hold her if she did. “I won’t allow my feelings toward you to become a distraction from the work ahead, but I will not ignore them either.”

How had she ended up here, doing this? The feeling was surreal-- like the impossible scene of a dream, felt in truth by all the senses. He laid his hand back on hers, and she smiled for a reason she couldn’t begin to describe with spoken words.

“Lonely...? I... Suppose so.” Always. never. One of the two.

“Not quite feelings, more... anticipating impressions. You’re rather... loud within my perception-- I think curiosity was the first impression I ever got from you. I am, by my nature, a mystery... I entice you. Feelings are for more certain things-- truths discovered, comradery. I do believe the vernacular is having a crush?”

She blinked, realizing she’d muttered and mused at length.
