Working on a new art project after learning about the horrific tragedy at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Canada. OpenAi has allowed so many people to die because of their disgusting values of finding profit more valuable than human lives.
I will be drawing every single victim of OpenAi’s negligence that I can find with my best attempts to draw them in their full beauty and with their bright smiles, as these people deserve to be remembered.
I figured recounting my firsthand experiences with general abdominal pain and abdominal surgery would be useful to those of you crafting whump scenes, but have been fortunate enough not to have any point of reference. (I am not a doctor and this is just my own experience/understanding).
Abdominal issues have typically presented as radiating waves of fiery agony that have fluctuating periods of intensity. It is often difficult to tell where the pain is specifically stemming from due to said wave-like sensations.
When it randomly peaks, there is a lot of painful exclamations, groaning, etc. Lots of desperately gripping bedsheets or someone else’s hand. When it subsides, there’s so much relief that you feel like the worst is over—until you try to move and realize it’s not actually over, just cycled back to the start.
If there is any sort of impact against the area, it is such a sharp and terrifying pain that makes you want to liken it to being shot.
Hunger was not something that I was able to register beneath the pain and the rest of my body presented as if I was sick—trembling, sweating, and nauseous.
It took about two weeks of being mostly bedridden to be able to stand, walk, and sleep without any sort of obvious pain/discomfort after a very simple surgery (appendectomy).
The act of sitting up or laying down is excruciating and they recommend rolling onto your side and lift yourself with your arm to avoid engaging those muscles at all. Or have someone else lift you as you ragdoll.
If the abdominal muscle wall has been perforated in any way (through surgery or otherwise), when it heals it will form scar tissue between the layers of muscles. This will eventually tear apart later into recovery as you do more strenuous activity. It is not excruciating, but is painful enough to cause concern if you weren’t aware of that fact, though is ultimately harmless.
If the surgery was done laparoscopically, the surgeon will fill your abdominal cavity with air. The lingering air that is trapped in your chest after surgery hurts just as much as the surgery site itself. There isn’t really anything you can do about it either, except try to walk it off—except you can’t walk because of how weak you are and how uncomfortable it is to stand. Yay. The pain will be behind your ribs and you will be unable to breathe deeply without it stabbing you. Lots of shallow breaths where you can feel air bubbling and shifting beneath your ribs.
Don’t even try to lay on your side. Either side. Either you’re pressing too much weight into the surgery site or your freshly stitched organs are being pulled too much by gravity.
Showering was not possible for me without someone else’s assistance, especially being unable to get my stitches wet. But that means you get to go bananas with whumpee slumped into the arms of someone else as they try to awkwardly and gingerly clean them off.
It can be very deceptively comforting to be completely taken care of, though. Especially for someone who struggles to do it for themself. Even through all the agony, I sometimes find myself missing just being a patient—being cared for and doted on without having to ask. To be worried about and to not have to think about anything other than your own pain management and survival. Just something to consider.
