🌞 I made this ring last year based on the Picasso painting, Girl Before a Mirror. I didn’t know if I wanted to make it for production or just keep her close to me. In the painting the girl is young and beautiful but the reflection she sees is distorted and old. I love how universal that sentiment is. Jewelry used to have deep meaning to the wearer beyond the aesthetics, so for me this is a reminder that we are our worst critic and to be kind to yourselves. 💕 I think we all need a little love, so this will be available for purchase next month. ⚒I get asked a lot how I got into the trade of Metalsmithing... It started with an internship at a large jewelry studio responsible for a pile of “big box shop” seasonal jewelry designs. I’d had an established jewelry business back home in Canada before I left to New York. It was component based, assembly style situation that left me frustrated creatively. I had a dream about this one metal pendant and scrambled through the jewelry district trying to find something similar. No such luck... until my design director said, “Why don’t you just make the pendant yourself?” My brain practically blew up. I’d never considered the idea. Buckets of metal beads and chains paired with our exposure to mass production makes you forget that somewhere, at sometime that thing was HANDMADE 🤯 and holy shit I could do that myself! That design director told me to go to Trade school, because frankly New York has the best of it. Women weren’t well represented in the world of smithing. The diamond district is all men banging around at their benches. I agonized, I waited almost a year before finally applying. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. My gran was an incredible painter, and to me that’s what art looked like. I never felt like I had a place in the world until I realized you can still be an artist and be rubbish with a paintbrush. After 4 years of calling this little corner our studio... Stella still can’t let go. Mercurial is moving West to LA this weekend. New York has been home for 7 years and without it I wouldn’t be where I am now. I went to metalsmithing school here where I learned I was a creative mind, I just needed the right medium to let it out. I met unbelievable people in my industry and had the pleasure to work with extremely talented crafts-people who shared their skills and countless years of experience with me. I am so incredibly thankful. We will miss this place painfully, but the sunshine is calling. Stella’s retirement is going to be gloriously spent sleeping on hot stones, not filthy floors.
