Digital Marketing Dictionary – A Beginner’s Guide!
Digital marketing and its many parts – anyone can get confused between the terms and definitions until they are a pro in it. To ease some of your confusion we bring to you a list of terms separated between tools used in digital marketing, its components and its algorithm.
Tools:
AdSense – a pay-per-click (PPC) advertisement application that allows bloggers and Web publishers to generate revenue from the traffic on their sites.
AdWords – is the pay-per-click (PPC) search-engine marketing (SEM) program provided by Google. These can be image based or text based.
Banner Ad – the graphical images or small animation file embedded within a webpage, often used for advertising
Blog – a piece of relevant article with appropriate keywords, often written by the website owner to increase the traffic flow
Content – any material be it text, image, video, audio or app published on the internet
Microblog – a platform wherein users can share short status updates and information, e.g. Twitter
Podcast – audio or video content which can be downloaded and listened to/viewed offline
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) – refers to the broad range of search-marketing activities, either paid or organic
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – uses website analysis as well as copy, design and structural adjustments to ensure achieving the highest possible positioning on desired search-engine results pages
Social Media – online networking platforms available for users to generate content and communicate through the internet
Vlog – just like a blog, but documented using videos
Component:
Hashtag – a symbol (#) often used to group tweets by popular categories on Twitter
Influencer – someone who has a lot of fan following and therefore holds a lot of power in communicating their opinions that eventually affects opinions and behaviour
Keyword – a word or phrase that someone uses to search for relevant topics on search engines
Keyword Density – the proportion of keywords to the total number of words on a webpage
Landing Page – a stand-alone webpage that a user “lands” on after visiting a paid search-engine listing or following a link in an email newsletter
Algorithms:
Algorithm – mathematical rules and calculations a search engine uses to determine the rankings of the sites it has indexed
Backlink – a link from another website directed to your own, also known as “Inbound Link”
Conversion – if a visitor takes the desired action while visiting your site, which can be a purchase, membership signup, download or registration
Cost per Acquisition (CPA) – a pricing model where companies are charged by advertising platforms only when leads, sales or conversions are generated
Cost per Click (CPC) – a pricing model where companies are charged by publishers for every click people make on a displayed or test ad
Cost per Thousand (CPM) – a pricing model where advertising impressions are purchased and companies are charged according to the number of times their ad appears per 1,000 impressions
Click-Through Rate (CTR) – it identifies the percentage of people who clicked on link usually placed in an email, an ad, website page, etc.
Geo-targeting – search engines results displayed dependant on where you are geographically
Impressions – is the number of times a company’s ad appeared to its target audience
PageRank – an old method of Google for measuring the popularity of a webpage
Ranking – the position of a website in search-engine results pages
ROI – an acronym for “return-on-investment” it is the percentage of profit achieved from a given digital marketing activity
Web 2.0 – a collective name given to new technologies and online trends like blogs, social networks, RSS, podcasting, etc.
