Illya raised an eyebrow at the question, tilting his head slightly. ”Meredith Sulez? Are you not missing a certain blonde charge of yours?” Charge was an exaggeration, the girl was about as trained as a guardian as he was in Polka dancing. The Royal moroi had made it a point of reminding him she was not alone, for having the dhampir before him as a guardian, but here she was, no blonde Barbie in sight.

”One that is supposedly your friend?” He knew she was in the library, he’d made sure there was someone watching her when he was checking out the defenses of the campus. The place as too exposed, even with the extra sun that generally was a turn off for Strigoi. Literally and figuratively.

     Tall, blonde, and Russian. So this was the Guardian that got a rise out of Elena the other day. Granted, these days especially, that didn’t take much. Meredith raised an eyebrow at his question, closing her phone and placing it into her pocket. “Elena’s my friend, yes. I also help keep an eye on her for her own good, but she’s not my charge and I’m not going to pretend my training’s up to par enough for her to be.” It was true enough and there was no point beating around the bush about it.

     Sure Meredith had trained in various ways under different people, namely Alaric and Eddie. She was also fairly skilled and a quick learner. That, however, did not mean she was qualified for anyone-- by Guardian standards-- to be her charge. There was also the fact, she wasn’t driven by the same mentality. Would she protect the people she cared about? Even with her life? At least in Elena’s case she was pretty sure the answer was yes, but Meredith hadn’t grown up around Moroi society and her purpose for being in Palm Springs was school. She wanted to be a lawyer and she’d made that clear to others before. “Elena’s one of my best friends actually.”

   It’s a few minutes later, Meredith ushering various party-goers    back into the party and away from the-- away from the body,    that she sees Eddie come outside. She dares not alert Cristian    yet, knowing he was prone to acting on his impulses and if it    was true that a Strigoi-- or heaven forbid multiple Strigoi on the    grounds, that’s the last thing she needed. As for Adrian, he     was likely safer inside than out in the open in what could be a     trap.

             “He’s dead. Over there.” She pointed into the bush. “If I had to              guess he was drained and thrown out the window.” Her eyes              are scanning the area around them, alert, but there’s an unsettled              look in her eyes. She’s seen too many Strigoi lately, too much              death. She wasn’t sure, as calm and collected as she usually              was, that she could deal with another bloodbath.

I’m just telling you the reason.” Meredith was still working to balance two lives and up until mid-terms week she had been doing a pretty decent job of it. But it was still two lives-- that of a Dhampir training until another, and that of a law student. One day, and Meredith was beginning to think that day would be soon, she would need to choose.
