ZZZs THOUGHTS Did I drink too much coffee today? I knew that last cup was too strong. I can only lye here on the extra firm, oversized king bed of this vacation rental, and wonder why I am not sleeping. There goes the dog, now. Scratching at the door. Good. Gives me a purpose for being awake, now. Let her out. A midnight stroll is not part of her usual routine. She must be picking up on my restlessness. Better let her out as not to wake she who is occupying the other hemisphere of this king-sized planet of foam. Her light snoring has already paused. Her subconscious sensing the energy building in this very dark room. I'll just open the door for the dog. I'm sure she will find the wee-wee pad I placed in the foreign hallway. I'm just going to leave the door cracked a bit so she can let herself back in. Maybe it was the Swiss Rolls I ate. Damn that Lil Debbie. What a whore! The melodic waves of deep breathing start back up. Success! I pulled off my stealthy operation. Maybe It's lack of excercise. I should get up early and go for a walk. The dog has found her way back in and lies back down on the plush bath rug I borrowed for her from the cold tile of the bathroom floor. Wonder if she hit the wee-wee pad. Should I get up and check? Shouldn't I have a paper towel handy, just in case? Where are my slippers? The background breathing crescendos now, into to a light snore. So far so good. I won't go. Don't want to wake her just to check the hallway for the island-shaped wet spot? What do bedbugs look like? How do I know the bed I'm in is not full of them? I'm not paranoid, usually. But these little flea sized bugs keep jumping on me. Got one, earlier. I squished it with ease. Hm, can't be a flea then. Fleas don't crumble under the weight a fingertrip, leaving a trail of mashed bug parts, as I drag my finger across the white sheet. I've got to tell the property manager. The snoring stopped! Sh! Cover the glow of the cell phone. Wait. Wait. Draw in a couple if deep breaths in case her ears are searching for the accompanying sound of a slumbering being. Maybe these are tiny gnats. Why would gnats be in the bed? I'm freaking myself out now. The rhythmic snoring fades back in. I should put his phone down and try to sleep. But, I know those 1970's glow-in-the-dark stars above will mock me, again. Just as they did before. Like, did the owners know that I would have trouble sleeping? How did they know? And does this help me sleep or keep me awake, because I can't resist sneaking a peak to see if the are still glowing. "Lye down comfortably..." starts up in my head. The meditation app I use to help me sleep. I usually don't need it. Maybe i will try to recite the whole thing in my head. That should do it.
