Six sands
Final proposal
Aims and Objectives:
To take samples of sand from beaches around Wellington and analyse them via photography.
Methodology:
Samples will be taken of sand from sandy and pebbly beaches around Wellington, and photographs will be taken of those beaches. Close-up photographs will then be taken of the sand in a studio setting, experimenting with lenses to get better definition of the size and type of grains. The photographs of the beaches and the photographs of the sand will then be either juxtaposed or joined together, and superimposed onto a map of Wellington.
Rationale:
Photography can be used to show the differences and similarities in granule size and makeup across beaches in Wellington. In addition to the scientific intrigue of the process of the ocean breaking down rocks and shells to smaller and smaller pieces, the map can be referred to by people considering which beach to go to in the Wellington region - for example, when deciding where to go to build a sandcastle.
Output:
Four to six images of beaches and sand, and one map with the sand superimposed.
