“ shadow man. ” he tested the words on his tongue, suppressing a small, amused smile that threatened to rise at his lips. “ that’s a nice one, oretsev. i’m impressed. ” taking a step to the side, aleks focused on some rather uninteresting part of the scenery before looking back to mal. “ greed is a funny thing, mal. ” greed had drove him to do many things, that quest for power, for something more, always ringing at the back of his mind. “ you paint me as the villain and yet -- do you truly know anything about me? or is just your greed for alina that drives your hatred? ”

𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠. they were so close; she was so close. and in the blink of an eye, all had gone south and he finds himself within the darkling’s clutches once more. all he can do is glare and attempt to ignore the taunting, but it only seems to fuel his anger with himself and the man before him. already he fears whatever the other is planning for him, knowing he has an angle at exploiting mal’s feelings for alina. ( of course he’d do anything to keep her alive and well – but it doesn’t mean he’s so quick to admit any of this or give aleksander the satisfaction. ) brows knit together as he glares, lips part and volume is louder than he had intended, ❝ you sound so foolish thinking the way you do. but you don’t know alina, not like i do. ❞
it was easy. exploiting memories, feelings, all of it. he’d spent years and years studying people, watching how they reacted to even the most mundane of things. and now? well, playing that part was easy. he wasn’t stupid, he knew that there was a flicker of what the man in front of him believed was love. even alina, somehow, believed that whatever they had was love. “ foolish? ” there was a hint of a laugh at that, shaking his head. “ tell me how much you know her. tell me all about your precious little memories that you’ve shared. ” his voice was bored, clearly tired of the conversation already before it had even started. “ tell me that you know anything about the woman that she is now. the power she holds -------- that is something that you’ll never understand. ” leaning back a bit, he shrugged. “ but, please. go ahead and tell me whatever sob story you have prepared for me. maybe it’ll touch something in me. ”

another day, another appearance. such was their life since the fold came down around them, their goal combined; a peaceful ravka, a place for the grisha to live, to thrive. it was more than she could have imagined. appearances still seemed to be something that they had to keep up, meetings and dramatic demonstrations of how they brought down the fold, all lent themselves to their regular weeks. but this? this was keeping the grisha in people’s good spirits, it was giving them safety, a place to call HOME. but things would change, and soon. they had to. “ do you think someone should dress as a volcra this time? “ her brows raised as she glanced over at him, kefta still hung where she could see it. “ i’m just saying, it might give a little more flare and surprise if one suddenly jumped out from behind someone. maybe grab one of the delegates from the wandering isle? “ a smile graced her features before she wandered over, one hand grazing his shoulder before she reached for the kefta hanging up, turning to him with it in hand. “ come on, let’s get this on you. they’re expecting us to look our absolute best out there later. “ ━━ ✦ @merzcst // aleks.
he’d imagined this before. a time where there would be peace, a chance for everyone to finally live in harmony. all he’d wanted was safety for grisha. he’d planned to use the fold for his whims, a sun summoner’s powers making it all possible, and yet, alina was the one variable he hadn’t quite imagined. the one variable that had changed everything, from destroying the fold, being by his side, changing parts of him that he hadn’t ever imagined possible. “ oh, maybe we can dress you as the volcra. ” his words were paired with a small smile that tugged at the corner of his lips, eyes focused over on alina as he turned to her. “ a little flare, yes. if one of them has a heart attack from being scared, i’ll have ivan save them. ” it was easy to joke with her, to sit here and forget, for once, about the worries surrounding the both of them no matter the state of peace. “ if they were expecting me to look my absolute best, i would’ve gotten another couple hours of sleep. ” as he moved towards alina, he grabbed hold of his kefta, sliding his arms in to slip into the fabric. “ thank you. ” a pause. “ are you ready to once again force a smile for so long that your cheeks start to ache? ”
🌿 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 second army valued archery. the precision of a eagle’s eye, the taut bow string, the steel - tipped arrowhead —– it’s an art form at best, and a weapon of deadly accuracy at worst. the anticipation of it all is gruelling : will the arrowhead meet its mark ? will the bowstring snap your wrist at the last possible second ? andromeda supposes most grisha don’t like something so unpredictable. even the stormiest of squallers didn’t find solace in the dubious storm clouds. she, herself, is drawn to the control. an art form —- if nothing else, she was a spectacle for ravkan royalty, another party trick that could be paraded around the country with her pretty smile. a deadly weapon —- if nothing else, she was perfectly capable of outshooting a vast majority of first army soldiers. ( . . . but neither shoe fits just right. )
she examines the arrows sunk into the target with a soft glow of pride. bullseye, bullseye —– her faintly satisfied expression dimming as the darkling is borne from the shadows. ( not literally — or maybe literally, she’s been absorbed in target practice for saints know how long. ) eyes widen slightly ; she tucks her hair behind her ears in an attempt to look less windswept, less wild, and more like the groomed grisha soldiers that line the dining halls each morning and night. “ i’m sorry —- i didn’t realize anyone would be out here . . . ” / @merzcst gets a plotted starter !
aleks had taken pride in his army. he’d understood taking great care, finding those would help defend their people ( defend ravka ) until the end. ravka had endless wars, endless battles -- he felt like preparing his people was their only chance. with the fjerdans and shu han bordering them, there was always a quest for power, always that hunger and desire for more. the only thing he could do was be prepared for the inevitable battle ahead of them. the general didn’t often see every training session -- his time was spent hunched over his war table, plotting out their enemies movements around the map. his time was spent meticulously going over every plan, every event in the future. his stumbling upon people training, on people sparring, was a rare sight. and yet this encounter was not just some random stumbling, not when he’d sought her out himself. he’d save that point for later.
“ don’t stop on my account. ” he said, his hand gesturing to the target she’d been aiming for previously. hands moved to clasp behind his back, him walking a bit closer to her as he’d watched her. before he’d been noticed by her, hiding in the shadows, he could see the steady aim, the attention to detail. the form as she’d pulled back the string of the bow before finding her target. “ i didn’t mean to interrupt. ” his voice was silk, a hint of a smile evident on his lips. “ i was hoping that i’d catch you as you were wrapping up. ” leaving his words at that for a moment, he kept his distance a bit, trying to avoid getting in her way. he’d wanted to get her attention, wanted to speak, but he was biding his time. having practice with eternity, he knew a great deal about waiting. “ would you rather me come back later? ” his question was paired with a raise of his eyebrow, hands still resting behind his back.
hi, everyone! i’ve been a little quiet the last few days because i’ve randomly been super exhausted for no reason, so i haven’t had much energy to write. i’m going to try and get to drafts tomorrow and friday if i feel more awake, and then most likely, i’m going to be reading acowar/acofas this weekend so i might be mia again for a few days before i get stuff in the queue. i’m still around i’ve just been hiding on dis.cord ! if anyone is interested in plotting or chatting there, you can add me: the shadow king.#2721

DAVID SHIFTS UNCOMFORTABLELY under the gaze of the darkling. so much of david’s life revolved around keeping his head down and doing his work. he never rocked the boat. he was out of his element. he was far from his workrooms and standing before the darkling. he was being asked to do what was believed to be the impossible, but david could feel in his gut it was possible. this plan was going to work and the darkling was going to be able to control alina’s powers. he told himself that was a good thing. he was their general. they were at war. the man in front of him cared more about the grisha than anyone else on the earth. he wouldn’t do something that would endanger them. but ‘whether she wants to or not’ hangs in the air. he wants to trust the man before him. his heart aches for that trust. but the words sound sinister as he turns them over in his head. he didn’t know alina. she was just genya’s friend. and he couldn’t say no to the general. ❝ i’m not worried it will work. it will ❞ his words more confident than the storm inside him. ❝ I just don’t understand why alina wouldn’t want the amplifier. isn’t it supposed to help lift the fold? ❞
all aleks could do was pretend that he had a plan. he could pretend that in the end, everything would turn out as he was hoping. that alina would finally see sense, leave her tracker, and come back to the little palace. was he too hopeful? that much he was sure of. he knew that his time of playing nice was over -- his only option was getting her to cooperate no matter the cost. “ good. if you know it’s going to work, then there won’t be any problems. i trust you to do the job, that’s why you’re here with me. ” if there was anyone that aleksander knew could complete what he wanted, it was david. “ alina is stubborn. ” he left it at that for a moment before bringing his gaze back to the man near him. “ the fold will be in our control with the amplifier, yes. ” again, a vague sentence, but it was the truth. he could be honest, even if that honesty was still somehow riddled with white lies. “ all of this is the step towards the future. alina, the amplifier, us working together... it all needs to happen for this to work. you’re a part of this story, david. with the amplifier, the fold will be the least of everyone’s problems. our enemies have to know the scale of our strength. of all of us. ”
