This term and this course boosted my design and innovation confidence. I felt most impacted by the guest speakers and the hands on activities. The TedTalks were also really attention-grabbing. Lauren Holden-Kilbane and Ryan Brown were probably the two most influential speakers through out the course. Their presentations aligned directly with what we were learning and boosted my background for the big kitchen project. I learned how to ask better questions, how to draw fast and simple objects, how to look at scenarios differently and how to use innovation as a technique to better the world of design. I can’t wait to implement these topics in the rest of my time at OSU and my career in the design world. Thank you Andrea!!

I keep forgetting to upload these note cards, but regardless I really enjoyed this weeks reading of The Shape of Design. There was a lot of themes that hit directly with this course and this project. I probably read the article twice and received new information after each read. The Unexpected Benefits of Rapid Prototyping was another great article that had some strong content. Overall, great reads this week!

Week 7 was pretty short because of the three day weekend, so the short class time we did have have was about reframing and creating. My favorite exercise from the past week was forced connections. I enjoyed seeing the drawings that others created and seeing the connection between what could be possible for things that didn’t necessarily go together. This exercise was really helpful and gave me my idea for my solution, but I plan to continue to reframe my question to find the perfect solution.

I’m looking forward to begin integrating all that we have learned about design thinking with our projects. Gathering the data was a bit challenging, but I can’t wait for the ideas to start flowing. I’m finding that I am really enjoying the TedTalks and I think I will do some outside research to see if there are any on kitchens on those that surround my demographics of shared homes and apartments. This week’s material focused a lot on integration and combinations. Steps surrounding this design process are coming in series of 4 and I am having a hard time remembering all of them. That’s where these notecards are coming in handy. I think my favorite part of this week is the quote “creativity is not magic, creativity is for everyone”. Here’s to the creativity of new solutions amongst kitchens.

I loved the graphic component of this week. Having our guest speaker was really entertaining and allowed me to feel braver with my doodles. I have an iPad Pro and I feel so deterred from using it in the ways that Ryan does. There was always pressure to have perfect, detailed drawings and yet what Ryan creates with his doodles are a work of art. I also enjoyed the video of weird or different and the different ways things can be see in our world. We become so accustomed to our set ways and what is routined, that it is so hard to think out of the box and when we do it is thought of as “weird”.

This week’s materials, as well as my notecards, felt very wordy and I can only chalk it up to the place we are in the term and with our projects. We are learning more about the work that goes beyond the process of innovation. While it is conversing and coming up with ideas and innovations, there needs to be sound logic and reasoning. There are requirements, or a better word would be guidelines, so that each project has no outstanding characters. A brief is helpful in paving the path so that others can put words into action and convey the meaning of the idea to all. A brief and personas are the first steps to executing a solution to a problem. All very wordy.

Week 3 was a lot about the process of design innovation, which is different for every individual. While there are steps to promote design thinking, there is no “correct” way. Aspects include time, techniques, group settings and components that allow ideas to flow more freely. They also help to sort through ideas and to test them. I’m really enjoying the videos, especially those from David Kelly. I really appreciate his work and I believe in what he is doing. I also really enjoyed Elise Roy’s TedTalk about adversity and how important changing the purpose for what you design really is. I never would have thought that disability designing leads to successful, widespread products. I thought that Joel’s presentation was also really neat and I like how we can see the work that he did with the top of design innovation through the marketing he did for the Natural Co-Op. Now when I go into the stores, my experience will be deeper with meaning. The greatest thing I can take away from this week and all the great content we covered, was that you design innovation applies to more career paths than you think. I would originally think that the class was more for entrepreneurs, but I think it applies to all careers.

This week felt pretty short with only having one class, yet there was a great amount of content in the readings and the film. The recap of Lauren’s presentation and her noteworthy words was exceptionally helpful. I really loved having her come to the class; this was content that was enjoyable to reflect on. All of the articles and course work has been enjoyable thus far and it actually seems like the polar opposite of work. What I enjoyed the most with this week (which can be seen in most of my notecards) is that the activity we are doing in class with the interview of the kitchen is relevant to the reading material about conducting material. I look forward to applying the data we received during our interviews into some type of solution.

Design Innovation is a class I was really excited for. I would I am a creative individual, but I often have a hard time thinking outside of the box. I like structure and I think this hinders my thought process. From this week, the content that I felt the most connected to was the Tim Brown article, Lauren’s presentation and the briefing of the wallet designs. The wallet project especially caught my interest and felt like a valuable lesson. We were given creative freedom with the opportunity to be flawed and yet almost everyone stuck to the stereotypes of wallets that are designed currently. I think this reflects the pressure of societal norms that many people feel in their every day lives. Tim Brown’s article was a great introduction article that connected design thinking to many different careers. I felt like I received a lot of background information from it. I really enjoyed Lauren’s slides and her point of view that there is more than what meets the eye. I think this can be applied to all aspects of design. While my interest of interior design is very visual and physical, I believe there are emotions that can be delivered to individuals based on the design components given and their substance.
