Analysis
Overall I am satisfied with my work, especially when I look back at last years work and see how my skills have evolved. Personal growth and creative development is more important to me as it shows I can learn, overcome issues, develop my skills etc.
There are some areas I think I could have achieved better - ‘‘ Each idea must be conceptually clear and should be communicated in a graphically clear way. This means a limited colour palette, and avoiding unnecessary visual details, such as 3D lighting, shadows, or gradients. ‘‘
I do think I met this requirement, but my backgrounds may be complex and can often disguise the palette. Whilst the brief says to avoid 3D lighting and gradients, I was advised to do more work and experimentation with the fractal noise and nebula effects as they looked visually pleasing despite their complexity not being great for limited colour palettes and 2D lighting.
I also got some feedback saying that I should stop thinking about rules and limiting myself when it came to trying to make the different animation styles link together. I could either use the different visual styles clashing to my advantage or try and combine the two styles to blur the line between these clashing styles. After all, most the limits and rules are made up and I was limiting myself by heading to standards that didn’t exist.
This has lead to my work having similar visual styles. To try and make the colour palettes more obvious, I tried to make the nebula/fractal backgrounds have similar palettes to the main animation. For example with the tree an the human baby growing, I had green and brown for the main colour so I tried to keep the fractal background as Earthy tones.
I feel like I have met the basic requirements of the brief but I believe I could have done better and met higher requirements. Overall most my works seem too similar too each other. I originally wanted a clash of styles of 2d flat graphics and the realistic looking work, maybe some 3D. But due to personal fears and time constraints I decided render times may be a problem so I avoided 3D modelling and instead tried to create realism in after effects.
‘‘ This is an opportunity to develop your design voice and experiment, and each film should be seen as a moving piece of visual design, rather than a short narrative animation. ‘‘ I also believe I got too worked up in trying to portray the metaphor and expand upon my works idea that I fell into the trap of trying to form a cohesive narrative. This lead me to retract from the point of the assignment somewhat. Each animation stand alone works as a piece of motion design without narrative, but together they form a narrative because I have pieced them together in that order to form a narrative. I did not animate any of these with a story in mind. I wanted to just slowly have each animation portray more corruption from humanity. I only made one animation of corrupt humanity (pollution) and I believe it is the weakest of the 5 in visual appearance, closely followed by the ice shattering animation, as the effects looks cheesy. I think my 2 strongest animations were the ‘write on’ vines baby animation followed by the realistic planet. In terms of visual style, the 2D flat graphics stand out but I tried to blend them with the realism. Sometimes it is more subtle and other times it is not. However, I used this to my advantage as the 2D assets I used to be representative of Humanity not working well for the planet. 2D and 3D clash, as does humanity and mother nature.
In conclusion, I did not set out to create a narrative but I could construct a narrative out of the placement and order of my animations, so from there on I tweaked and edited them to help support the narrative and add extra animated details (such as the particle physics to represent a rocket, and the flat graphics to represent humanity standing out and being wrong for the planet).
I did some editing and added some ambient music. I added noise grain and an ambient glow layer to the 2D flat graphic animation in the middle. I wanted the flat graphic style to stand out from the more ‘realistic’ style of the final planet. The 2D flat graphics represent human life and the combination of the two styles represent human corruption. Or so I was intending it to anyway.
I really struggled with developing my ideas and metaphors in this assignment as I do not think I could fully utilise my ideas or express what was in my mind within such short time contraints of 5 seconds. For example a lot of the things I created like the world slowly being engulfed by smoke was not possible to do as within 5-8 seconds the process was too quick. Many of my ideas I believe could benefit from flowing from one animation to the next but due to time constraints I had to stick to straight cuts between the animations. This does make the metaphors and flow of the ‘story’ in my animation feel lost. Hopefully the message is still clear though. Mother earth - gave birth to human life - human life corrupts and pollutes the planet - mother earth dies - humanity branch out in the stars in search of a new home.
Almost there, just needs some tweaking (especially the pollution animation as it is still purely 2d flat graphics as opposed to a hybrid).
Feedback
Feedback from Paul G has helped me a lot with working out how to develop my work and be experimental.
Paul G preferred the work of the fractal noise making a semi realistic planet as it looks like more is going on. Using things like this and being more spontaneous with developing my work is more beneficial for learning skills. Having a theme is nice but I can hinder myself by limiting myself to imaginary rules i have set myself.Minimalism can feel too refined but you can also be experimental, it is just easier to be spontaneous and have more going on. More going on can remove limitations and make it less noticeable if you do break rules and you also aren’t giving yourself imaginary limitations.
I could combine the aesthetics of both the 2d graphics and the 3d looking fractal noises. I should not worry about transitions and focus more on just choosing my top 5 animations for the assignment.
Removed the caption to make it less infographic looking. Added some more details like the stars developing.
Since medea and gaia predict humanity is leading towards the 6th mass extinction. I think a good way to end my animation would be to go dark and explore one of the ways humanity can cause their own mass extinction.
Global warming/climate change
Self replicating nanotechnology (grey goo)
Artificial intelligence
Biochemical warfare
Biochemical/nuclear accident that burns up the atmosphere
Here is a cgi short film exploring the grey goo. The visuals of the goo taking over.
Since humanity according to both Gaia and Medea, are hurting the planet and are like a disease on Earth. I will use skin disease on the planet to be a metaphor for humans. Gaia believes humans are a threat to the natural order and way Earth maintains itself. We either have to change or Gaia will die, adapt, or kill us off. Medea suggests that the next mass extinction will be our own causing. I will not be posting pictures of skin diseases or making a mood board here as the images are often gross and unpleasant to look at.
Third animation for my project. This one will be used to introduce the counter animations to Gaia, where life on Earth dies and humanity hurts the planet.
First animation for my project
This is my intro animation to my assignment.
Following an online tutorial, I downloaded free fractal effects and composited them in after effects to create a planet. This is a really cool affect and it was really simple to create. Having a backdrop of a stock photo of stars, using the fractal noise filters that I downloaded, I colour corrected them and adjusted the curves, added them together. I used a mask for the planet and used a different fractal layer, this provided a planetary look and 2 more over the top provided an atmosphere. Gaussian blur to smooth out the edges of the planet to make it look more natural. Using an extra shape layer of the planet, I did a gradient and multiplied for the shadows. Then added a final glow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WzvR8lr1I4 I followed this tutorial and downloaded the free fractal pack this guy used.
Forgot to post this concept sketches of my idea before I posted my animation
Adapted one of my experiments into my assignment. Not complete yet.

further research
I was looking at the gaia and medea theories. Now, these theories are both named after greek goddess and folklore.
Gaia is obviously the goddess personifying the Earth. So I won’t delve more into that. Medea is the name of a woman in greek mythology. The story of medea is one of jealousy and revenge, eventually leading to filicide. ecause of this, the counter theory to Gaia is named after her as the hypothesis suggests that the super-organisms on earth are suicidal. Microbial life has been responsible for mass extinctions on earth. This suggests the opposite of Gaia where life and the earth work together as a singular organism. All but one mass extinction on Earth has been caused by life itself. (methane poisoning, the great oxygenation, snowball world 1 and 2) This can be seen now, as humanity are one of the biggest threats to planet earth and life on earth. Mass pollution, water depletion, mono-cropping, deforestation, climate change.
I think it could be a dark ecology to show the earth being like an organism and all life being connected working together and then humanity just...happens
An animation created by 3d game artist zat3am. this is intersting and shows creative ways of morphing objects, especially the second animation.

But I will use the morphing as inspiration
