things that make you go hmm
“Imagine having a child that refuses to hug you or even look you in the eyes”
Imagine being shamed, as a child, for not showing affection in a way that is unnatural or even painful for you. Imagine being forced, as a child, to show affection in a way that is unnatural or even painful for you. Imagine being told, as a child, that your ways of expressing affection weren’t good enough. Imagine being taught, as a child, to associate physical affection with pain and coercion.
As a preschool special ed para, this is very important to me. All my kids have their own ways of showing affection that are just as meaningful to them as a hug or eye contact is to you or me.
One gently squeezes my hand between both of his palms as he says “squish.” I reciprocate. When he looks like he’s feeling sad or lost, I ask if I can squish him, and he will show me where I can squish him. Sometimes it’s almost like a hug, but most of the time, it’s just a hand or an arm I press between my palms. Then he squishes my hand in return, says “squish,” and moves on. He will come ask for squishes now, when he recognizes that he needs them.
Another boy smiles and sticks his chin out at me, and if he’s really excited, he’ll lean his whole body toward me. The first time he finally won a game at circle time, he got so excited he even ran over and bumped chins with me. He now does it when he sees me outside of school too. I stick out my chin to acknowledge him, and he grins and runs over and I lean down for a chin bump.
Yet another child swings my hand really fast. At a time when another child would be seeking a hug, she stands beside me and holds my hand, and swings it back and forth, with a smile if I’m lucky. The look on her face when I initiate the hand swinging is priceless.
Another one bumps his hip against mine when he walks by in the hallway or on the playground, or when he gets up after I’m done working with him. No eye contact, no words, but he goes out of his way to “crash” into me, and I tell him that it’s good to see him. He now loves to crash into me when I’m least expecting it. He doesn’t want anything, really. Just a bump to say “Hi, I appreciate you’re here.” And when he’s upset and we have to take a break, I’ll bump him, ask if he needs to take a walk, and we just go wander for a bit and discuss whatever’s wrong, and he’s practically glued to my side. Then one more bump before we go back into the room to face the problem.
Moral of the story is, alternative affection is just as valid and vitally important as traditional affection. Reciprocating alternative affection is just as valid and vitally important as returning a hug. That is how you build connections with these children.
This is so goddamn important.
I verbally express affection. A LOT.
My husband… doesn’t. I don’t know why. For the longest time part of me wondered if it meant he loved me less.
At some point I told him about a thing I had done as a kid. Holding hands, three squeezes means ‘I Love You’.
Suddenly he’s telling me I Love You all the time.
Holding my hand, obviously, but also randomly.
taptaptap
on my hand, my shoulder, my butt, my knee, whatever body part is closest to him, with whatever part of him is closest to me
All the time.
More often than I ever verbally said it.
It’s an ingrained signal now, I can tap three times on whatever part of him, and get three taps back in his sleep. Apparently I do the same.
It’s made a huge difference for us.
People say things differently.
I'm not crying, you are
lol our society is so structured on binaries that people think cats are the opposite of dogs
we also regard dogs as “masculine” and cats as “feminine” to the point that it’s “weird” for men to love cats, women and gay men are stereotyped as liking cats, and creepiest of all, cats are stereotyped as “sexy” animals
Im 100% grossed out by this
this fits into my confusion as to why it’s perfectly acceptable to hate cats but blasphemy to hate dogs
That last comment just fucked me up
Holy fuck. @lastsonlost
What a fucking monster.
Oh my God, what the fuck
This is fucking disgusting.
Imagine the roles reversed
“I drugged her drink and raped her as much as a could, and left when she woke up. She got pregnant, and she wanted to do the right thing and settle down with me to raise the kid”
Suddenly it would have 50k notes
O…..Kay! I hope one day your husband realises the truth and finds out what an absolutely disgusting piece of shit you are!
This is honestly terrifying and I pray I never encounter a woman like this
What. In the actual. Fucking. Fuck.
“It got me the results I needed”?!!!!
Are you fucking insane?! 🤯
She’s a rapist and apparently proud of it.
This is the kinda shit I’m talking about when I say our SOCIETY AS A WHOLE — men AND women AND every other gender — is responsible for understanding and promoting consent.
Yes there’s an obvious consent violation because he was drugged, but even how she talks about him — “it brought out the best in him.” Imagine a man saying that raping his partner while she was drugged brought out the best in her.
the president of nigeria is about to fuck boko haram up and cut his own salary in half and criminalized female genital mutilation
the president of guinea built/is building infrastructure and school and wells all over the country and is decreasing youth unemployment exponentially
the president of cote d’ivoire made school mandatory of children ages 6-16 and banned plastic bags while also building ultra modern trasportation infrastructure
the future is for real in africa
I think this should have a hell of a lot more notes on it than it does. This is what good news looks like folk, and the continent of Africa surely deserves a shed load of it.
Today (April 7th) is Remembrance Day for the Rwandan genocide. While Rwanda still faces challenges, their recovery has been incredible. They now have the highest percentage of women in parliament around the world (one of only two countries to have over 50% women), their gross national income has risen each year, and life expectancy has risen from 48 in 1990 to 65 in 2013.
SO PURE!
Just so some of y’all know, this is not the actors or Marvel or Sony promoting the movie. This is them being the nicest people ever. They’ve talked about this. Tom started this habit of visiting every children’s hospital in the cities they film at ever since Homecoming. He would ask permission to borrow the suit and go on his own. No one was filming. Then Zendaya started going with him cuz she thought it was an awesome idea and then cameramen started also going. No one asked them to go. Jake Gyllenhaal then said recently that when he heard about this tradition, he had the need to do it too cuz it was the most amazing thing he’d heard of. Most of these visits weren’t even recorded. They’re just nice people wanting to make children happy and it’s so pure. There was even a clip of Tom crying afterward but I’m glad it was cut off cuz I did feel like they were invading his privacy there. And honestly, even if more actors from different franchises started doing this for publicity I wouldn’t care cuz they’re still making these children happy and fulfilling their dreams.

Just a reminder because apparently people don’t realize this, but the rainbow gay pride flag isn’t like…a gay male pride flag? it was literally meant as a pride flag for everyone in the community. not that there’s anything wrong with specific identities having their own flag, but i keep seeing ppl post flag sets as if the rainbow ride flag only represents gay men and saying that not including every single other flag known in existence means you’re excluding people when no it’s not the rainbow flag is for everyone
I think this is really important for people who are daunted by all the labels and still figuring themselves out. It’s okay. The rainbow flag is yours too

;w; <3
I think he’s actually from the Merby group. It’s a bunch dudes with facial hair who get together, put on tails, and do a photoshoot.
This photoshoot gets turned into a calendar which is then sold and most (if not all) proceeds go to charity.
Their most recent charity went to VPNL, which according to their website “works diligently throughout the province to change attitudes, behaviours, and social norms associated with violence. VPNL organizations provide violence prevention and early intervention services to those most at risk of experiencing violence: women, children and youth, Indigenous women and children, older persons, persons with disabilities, persons of varying race or ethnicity, LGBTQ+ persons, and persons of varying economic status.”
They also currently have applications open for new merbys!
Aside from it going to a great cause, it’s also a super funny & cute calendar! It makes for a great gift. I got two in 2018!
Oh and they’re also hella inclusive and socially conscious. One of my favorite quotes from the Merby site:
“Inclusion is our jam. Humans of all genders, ethnicities, faiths, abilities and ages are welcome. Good people, doing good things, having fun the whole time – that’s who we are. Ability to grow facial hair is irrelevant – it’s the beard inside that matters most.”
SAY NO TO CLING WRAP AND PLASTIC BAGS!!! 🚫🚫🚫
We are continuing our efforts in providing amazing products to lower our reliance on plastic products. We have seen a great reaction to our reusable straws and reusable produce bags but now it’s time to tackle one of the biggest culprits found in most kitchens: cling wrap and plastic sandwich bags.
Cling wrap and plastic sandwich bags are just another prime example of a single-use plastic that is completely unnecessary. It’s a temporary solution to our everyday lives that’s also quick and convenient but hasn’t been changed or modified in ages. With the push for more eco-friendly solutions to our plastic usage, we recently visited a farmer’s market where someone was selling these beeswax food wraps.
They are reusable, washable, keep your food fresher for longer due to them being 100% natural and breathable, and they simply look cooler than any plastic sandwich bag you’ve ever seen.
