The Afternoon Took a Turn. (…and then took a turn.)
The fantastically poignant fortitude of a gently aged John Hodgman is not to be understated.
[Re-listen to this, because it is—months later—still perfectly charming.]
My late ought’s Hodgmania aside, the middle 20 of these 63 seconds is surely the best flashforward to never make it onto the little screen, but I am tremendously gladdened that at least it exists in some form.
This had been grabbed and adjusted the other day in honor of a VERY special thing that came to be. Pretty friggin’ great.
"Is that Radiohead record coming out any time soon?"
I think about this little guy with alarming frequency. Probably because of the Tiny Tim sorta visual reference: him and the UB40 Tape kid, E14, whenever I try to encourage someone to take up listening to a thing. (Because it’s a fine line.)
678.9 s (11:18) Non-Comprehensive RotL⁺ “Ding-a-ling” Surimi* Sometimes one just wants to hear a special word. [Even if it slides a little into another ding related collection.] But it's sincerely among the best thing(-a-ling)s.
*Reconstituted fish paste is among the things I'll almost always happily eat. [As a post-industrial-revolutionary, I also enjoy a chicken nugget and a tater-tot.]
That totally looks like they're barfing mini hotdogs into each other's mouths.
The other day, my sister pinpointed my tendency to narrate everything I see sometimes, whether there is an attentive audience or not--a trait she noted I either inherited or was passively taught by our dad. Anyhow, I just said the above, about the Netflix cover art to Gaspar Noés "Love", to an otherwise empty room--in the case it ever comes to pass that she goes hunting for confirmatory validation from me on this assertion. Seriously, look it up. It seems almost like beyond-kissing, but not like the usual sort of beyond kissing.
On E201:ca55, the pivot was made from Billy Corrigan, the smartest kid on earth, to a very relatable anecdote on urFrenemy David, without this explicit synaptic leap (E48, mp3) even being discussed. Exquisite!
I don’t know if we ever discussed it, but it was this episode that kind of solved this problem in my heart.
“David M. Roderick, President” (SUCH a good basketball player.)
[Ad from Anchorage Daily News, 19750305.]
At some point “Psycho-cybernetics” was replaced by “Psionics” in the memory of this picture. Maybe because of its proximity to “Small Appliance Repair”? In ANY case, one still wants to get a good handle on every one of these things.
[ed., sometimes it seems like Tumblr audio flakes--I’m not precisely a computer maths person, I don’t know the deal--the dropbox guy does okay though, cf.: ] (Higher Quality version, still 24 minutes)
‘The Godfather’ is the 'I Ching'. ‘The Godfather’ is the sum of all wisdom. ‘The Godfather’ is the answer to any question. What should I pack for my summer vacation? ‘Leave the gun, take the cannoli.’ What day of the week is it? ‘Maunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday.’ And the answer to your question is ‘Go to the mattresses.’ You’re at war. ‘It’s not personal, it’s business. It’s not personal it’s business.’ Recite that to yourself every time you feel you’re losing your nerve. I know you worry about being brave, this is your chance.
Yeah, exactly.

The more things change¹ the more they stay the same². (Fun Fact: in the vein of extraordinary amounts of good advice, it was YLNT that cured me of my cargo-pants affliction. I used to put textbooks in my pockets!)

You carry around all these marbles of memory, but sometimes you want to set them down and sort a little. Not set down because they are a burden, just momentarily down because of the joy of sitting and sorting. Like laundry.
Excerpts from YLNT episodes: Lobster Farm, Rampant on a Field, Known for His Reach, and Breakin’ In. Excerpts from RotL episodes: 0, 2, 15, 17, 18, 30, 33, 34, 36, 40, 69, 71, 73, 84, 90, 104, 119, 122, 135, 136, and 144. (Even if every future eppo is all sauces, this isn’t exhaustive: the chili expansion pack would certainly broaden it out, but it was mostly meant to be comforting.)

I love me some indexed condiments and sauces. (I think it started focused on the mother sauces and lost its way)

I’d ended up with a copy of Brown and Water on my phone and periodically will see the associated image which will trip the sense memory of Biscuits and Lamb (!!!) Gravy, which was had at a restaurant for breakfast, months ago now, but may have been one of the most delicious foods I’d ever put in my mouth.
(My little brother, who is a little more fancy and a little less abstemious than I tend toward being, said it was better than any of the extensive sausage gravies he’d ever had. Which is nice in the sense of my not having any FOMO-esque issues. Which I tend not to experience too often, thankfully.)
The Whale and The Porpoise and The Captain and The Blacksmith.
There’s a certain calm induced by giving oneself a minute to get a thing done. An energy out of the system. Even if it’s not going to be pushed toward a useful context. One might be more healthy if physical exercise yielded the same response as a quick impulsive digital one.
