— breathe in, but it won't stop the rain from pouring. kim 'echo' yujin / 19 / demon baby agent

hiii this is @miajiwon​‘s mun here with my second character, yujin. he’s a demon agent enhanced with telekinesis and he’s very very upset with his situation. but is he going to do anything about it other than mope around? no. i’ll leave a summary of him under the cut as well as some plot hooks i’d like for him, so give ‘em a read and like this post if you’d like to plot! (yes i copypasted my intro on jiwon sue me)

backstory

born to civilian parents, yujin lived as normal of a life as humans could under these conditions 

he had awakened to his telekinesis at a very young age, making his toys float across rooms and stealing cookies off the top of the fridge, but even as he grew, he showed no intention of using his powers to fight 

however, his parents died to a demon attack when he was 10, and he was taken in by family friends who also had a son his age of their own, minseok. the parents were both seaside agents, and thus he came to live under their care

they tried their best to accommodate him, but he never quite felt like he fit in. he did his best to continue living on, though

after what happened to his parents, he lived in fear of the outside and demons and always spent his time within the facility

minseok was adventurous however, and wanted to become an agent when he was of age. he had yet to show any signs of being enhanced, though, which his parents worried a lot about 

at this point, yujin had kept his powers a secret as he didn’t want to be pressured into becoming an agent. he was too scared to do anything that dangerous

they were both 14 when seaside fell and they were forced to evacuate. they spent months alone as minseok’s parents fought with maylin to retake the city

news of their success finally arrive, and in his excitement, minseok snuck out to welcome his parents back ahead of time to celebrate their victory

yujin was reluctant, but felt obligated to join him after they had treated him so kindly

of course it wouldn’t go well, and they ended up being caught out by demons midway, and yujin, being the less athletic one between them, ended up tripping and getting caught 

he looked towards minseok for help, but instead saw him looking back with fear and resignation in his eyes. he said not a word, before turning around and running away from him and the demon

all yujin remembers after that is pain that felt like living hell, and then the next thing he knows, he wakes up on the ground alone, but alive

he had instinctively used his telekinesis to incapacitate the demon, but not before it poisoned him, not enough to kill, instead turning him into one of them

the realization of this fact started overwhelming him with negative energy, and he’s on the verge of fully turning when he’s found by maylin’s team

they manage to calm him down, but not before his powers injure several agents

he’s then offered the chance of joining them

he reluctantly does so, but he never quite recovers from the trauma. he distances himself from minseok and his family easily due to the amount of tests and training he had to go through, and he’s partly thankful for that excuse as he didn’t want to speak to minseok anymore after that incident

upon turning 18, he formally joins meia as an agent

currently

his general reputation is a gloomy demon agent who never shows his face around the facilities unless there’s a mission

he spends most of his time either on the outskirts of the agency’s boundaries or hidden away in a corner of the rooftop garden

if addressed or approached, reacts very timidly and with barely any eye contact, looks scared of other agents

tends to not talk much, but doesn’t mind company as long as the person doesn’t seem repulsed by or disgusted with him

if you get to know him better, he’s soft-spoken and friendly. he loves sharing his interests and hobbies, but seems to always be holding something back

isn’t particularly useful on missions, tends to do the bare minimum and is known to be quite cowardly. however, his control over his telekinesis is rather precise, if not as strong. he seems to be capable of much more with his abilities but is held back by his mentality and fear

the first month of being an agent for yujin was hell. no one trusted him or let him out of their sights, not that he really blamed them. the frequent tests and check ups bled him dry, and at some point, he started believing that the outside was more of a home than meia could ever be.

and so when security on him relaxes as he proves to be a non-threat, yujin slips out between appointments and missions to explore the ruined cityscape close by. his desire to escape from the suffocating air of the agency trounces his fear of demons, though not by far. he's blessed (cursed?) with the fact that he can slip by any stragglers easily enough, the negative energy seeping from him serving as a convenient disguise.

he often finds himself by the rainwater ponds created by debris and sealed with overgrown greenery. there's always some sort of small animal around, skittering about at the presence of a confusing human-demon hybrid, but yujin can't blame them—he's just as lost.

such is one of those days, having just returned from a mission. 'as useless as always,' he finds himself reading in between the lines. that's a shame. it can't be helped. he makes excuses for himself as he slips away into the shadows.

he takes the familiar path to a lesser known exit, about to step out of the agency's boundaries before he catches the sight of someone out of the corner of his eye. his heart sinks in horror, body frozen in place as his mind struggles to come up with an excuse.

just as expected—nothing. just a deer caught in headlights.

It was quiet outside of the civilian housing, and considering how early it was in the morning still, Cheng wasn’t surprised. The only other agent close by was Echo, someone he had consistently greeted with a wave every time they ran into one another in the agency or on missions. 

He would have wanted a conversation with the fellow demon agent, so they could share some experiences and explore the concept of demonkind, except with people like Agent Echo, one must be patient. In a way, the other reminded Cheng of the small animals that used to run by his farm - cautious, discreet and fearful. Even back then, Cheng had gentleness to spare, offering grains and slivers of food, soft spoken words and attention. Though it took a while, some of the skittish strays did warm up to him and would come when he called, bringing their family with them. 

This was perhaps an opportunity. 

“Good morning,” he said, gaze brushing past the multiple pebbles on the ground. Clearly, agent Echo had been training. It was a useful gift, telekinesis, and one agent Castle did not manifest. Cheng crouched down, touching a finger to the cool surface of one of the rocks, and just for fun willed it to move. Of course nothing happened, and the stubborn little nugget remained perfectly stationary. 

“May I join you?” He stood up again and asked, keeping his body language open. “Don’t feel any pressure to say yes. I know what it is like to want to be alone and would understand.”

he's always felt more comfortable around the civilians. some might say it's a good thing, so he knows what he's protecting, but he disagrees. it's more of escapism than anything, clinging onto the last memories of his happy family where it's familiar. the echoing laughter of children playing, the fragrant scent of a mother's cooking—signs of life carrying on even as the world has ended around them.

but as much as he wishes it to be otherwise, he can no longer be apart of that world, not with the inky black staining his skin. he keeps his distance from the civilians in fear of frightening them, because even if he tries his best to cover up the markings, his deformed, clawed hand serves as a warning for everyone around him.

it was just like this, however, when he first started using his powers. his parents didn't want him showing off in public in fear of their baby boy being whisked away to become a soldier—well, it's funny how things turned out, huh?

even now he retains the habit of keeping his true potential hidden, unwilling to tap into the newfound power he's received since becoming a demon. it feels wrong, to tarnish such precious memories like that, and yet he has to keep them alive somehow.

a rain of pebbles fall around him when he senses the presence of someone close by. he feels himself tense up, expecting the worst to happen. some civilian child wandering off? or worse, an adult? he doesn't think he can take a scornful gaze thrown his way right now.

even as relief floods his mind at the sight of a fellow demon agent, yujin remains frozen in place, unsure of what to do in this situation. agent castle has always treated him kindly, yet he finds it so very hard to open up to another person branded with black.

"ah. yeah. sure," he manages to respond, more out of panic than anything. "is there something...you needed?"

what was supposed to be a simple task with @miayujin

the fresh air feels good on his face, in his lungs and though his body still feels stiff, daesu is glad to be out of the temporary medic wing. even if he is still being held back from doing anything too strenuous. he knows without the help of head agent lerissa’s healing that they can’t be sure if the poison is fully out of his system though the odds of it lingering are slim. even now, as he holds his face towards the warm sun, daesu can feel the teasing darkness hovering over him. a dark cloud that only he can see. 

he can ignore it like he always has. pretend it is all okay because what else can he do? 

“glad for the breeze today or it would have been rather hot.” he comments, opening his eyes so he could throw a smile at the taller agent near him–what are they feeding the kids these days? so many of the younger agents are a whole head taller than him. “we’ll have to find a shady spot for a break later, i packed some snacks just in case so don’t hesitate to ask, yujin.” he pulls at the strap to his sling backpack then starts walking towards the front gates. 

todays job should be relatively easy. they’re one of a few sets of duos being tasked with an easy patrol. now that daesu is on the mend, he can get back to his duties as a senior and a team lead. he’s happy to be working with yujin as the younger male is someone he wants to look out for. maybe this scouting day with him will help foster a better relationship–help yujin open up. 

“we’re just sticking close to the fence today, mostly checking for any holes or rough spots that needs to be fixed. no big deal, yeah?”

the fact that he's allowed to frequently leave agency grounds is the only thing keeping him sane nowadays. a breath of fresh air does wonders for his psyche, the warm sunlight on his body washing away the icky feeling that always clings to his skin (no thanks to the demon markings). it gets a little hot sometimes with how much he covers up, but the breeze helps relieve that discomfort a little.

"i was just thinking the same," he returns a small smile, tugging at the sleeves of his turtleneck sweater nervously. hopefully he doesn't look like he's lying—he's gotten enough weird looks for his attire.

he simply nods at the offer of snacks. even if forced on him, he'd feel too bad to accept anyway—too awkward. maybe he'll just hold it in his hands if that happens, or perhaps feign a full stomach? would the senior agent fall for that? or would it just make things worse? actually, is he even hungry? maybe he's just overthinking this for no reason.

"huh?" he barely processes daesu's words, snapping back to reality with the questioning intonation that presents itself in front of him. what wasn't a big deal? he can't just ask that—it's as good as admitting he wasn't paying attention. oh jeez...

"yeah. no big deal," the last part comes out in almost a whisper as he trails along beside the senior agent. he'll be fine as long as he sticks with daesu, right? they shouldn't have to split up for anything, so this should be good—

"ah. i hope you're feeling better, by the way."
