With the whole fiasco going on about fuel adulteration in Kenya, how to increase the price of Kero to match diesel, how to reduce the use of kerosene among households; the obvious importance of kerosene is being forgotten. Kerosene also known as paraffin or Kero is a flammable liquid which is used in many industries and homes around the world as a fuel for light, heat and power. Kerosene is produced by separating the compounds which make up crude oil. This process is known as ‘fractional distillation’ and leaves a clear and thin oil which is roughly 0.81 g/cm³ Kerosene’s uses vary dramatically from fuel for oil lamps Cleaning agents,  Jet fuel Heating oil Fuel for cooking. Kerosene and biomass(charcoal and firewood) still take up a big percent of the energy stack in households fuel demand especially in rural areas. It is worth noting that countries with high LPG consumption especially in rural areas like Senegal and Ghana have benefited from strong policy intervention by the government including direct subsidy. Others like South Africa have passed strong legislation that promote an environment that eases access and distribution. If LPG penetration is to reach 70% by 2030 the government of Kenya needs to first understand that the biggest hindrance to LPG uptake is cost. Such policy frameworks as capping prices of LPG, enforcing unified valves on cylinders and subsidising cost of cylinder acquisition would go a long way to promote adaptation, acceptance and usage of LPG in rural economies. #Transpillar #Gas #OilandGas #OilIndustry
