Final Presentation and Project for New Media, New Forms
New Media, New Forms Final Project
Part 2
This part of my my final project is a 3D print of myself. One part is a regular 3D print of myself and the next part is a glitches 3D print of myself. This was fun to experiment with because I was not only experimenting with a 3D print being glitches but also the material itself. Overall, after a lot of testing and experimenting, I finally ended with two pieces that I enjoy.
New Media, New Forms
Part 1 of final project
My final project has been going well and the first part of my final project is a video on a loop of glitched artwork. This glitched artwork is from my birth until now. It shows the sequence of me as I have grown up and explores the was I have changed throughout time. overall, this part is pretty much done, I just need to add sound to make it all come together.

New Media, New Forms Homework:
During the past week I finished my collaboration of images that I glitched. I ended with 80 images that looped in a circle that could be formed into a video. These images were then collaborated together on scratch to form looped video. After finishing the looped video, I wanted to add music but I couldn't configure music that would go with it. I am still trying to figure out the next steps to this video and I am excited to see the ending result.
New Media, New Forms Reflection:
During last class we had time to experiment on our own and work on our final project. Due to this I decided to take my project in a new direction and scan myself. (with an Xbox live) From scanning myself, I then 3D printed myself and this is what happened. I wanted to glitch it into the computer to create a distortion with my body and this is the result. I would like to do one regular print next class to further explore 3D printing. Overall, this class time was a great experience to further my knowledge and understand how the 3D process.
New Forms, New Media Homework
I am progressing through my final project and configuring glitched pictures to further develop a sequence through time. This will turn into a video that will be played on loop and the images will lead one into the next. Overall, the process is going well and I am beginning to have a lot of content to use. Another part of this object will be a 3D printed image of myself and then I will be distorting/ glutting that image before printing.
New Media, New Forms Reflection
-Addie Wagenknecht
The first artist that was shown in class was Addie Wagenknecht, this artist investigates forms of hacking and incorporating sculpture. The first artwork that was shown was her Liberator Vases. This artwork showed one of her 3D sculptures that was 3D printed. This 3D printed model was then replicated virtually to show an exact representation.
-Takes a 3D model and virtually replicates it
-3D modeling process and expressing social and personal issues
-Heather Dewey-Hagborg
This artist created models of people by collecting data from garbage that people leave in public areas. This could be anywhere from as small as gun to as big as a used can or tissue. This artist uses the DNA of strangers to create a replication of about what they would look like and presents it in an installation.
-Aram Bartholl
This artist created pin drop signs that are usually listed on google maps of cities and shows the middle of that city. Aram detected where the exact coordinates are and placed a large sculpture in its place.
-Closing thoughts:
Think about the conversations you want to create as an artist in your final project:
What does your work question?
Are there leading thoughts?
What can or does the viewer see?
New Media, New Forms Homework In the pictures above, it shows my inspiration board. After weeks of learning new information, I felt that I connected with glitch art the most. By distorting an image it gives the viewer a new representation and a different purpose. For my final, I want to incorporate glitch art on a more personal level. I will be collecting images from birth until now and create a loop of a glitch art video. This video will go on repeat, so the idea of my progression through life and the changes and transformation that occurred from birth until now. As this is playing there will be another computer in the back with a Mackey Mackey attached to it. In front of the first computer, there will be quotes that the Mackey Mackey will attach to that show a progression throughout my life as well on an intellectual level. When one of the quotes is touched, a song will play that represents the age of the time of the quote. In the last picture presented, it shows a diagram of what the project will look like. Overall, I am really excited to get started with this project!
New Media, New Forms Reflection
At the start of class we went over the different projects that were posted on our blogs and updated everyone with what we were doing. This was important because it gives not only the viewer a better sense of who the person is as an artist but it got us to think about the many ways these new techniques can be used. As the class went on we were introduced many artists. The first artist we looked at was Jean Tinguely. This artists was the start to conceptual art in the 1950′s and it was interesting to see where his ideas evolved from. We were shown many of his artwork and it was interesting to see how his artwork related to many of the other artists we were shown during pervious classes. The second artist we looked at was Aram Bartholl. We were shown one of his live performances that he programed between a computer and mouse. This grabbed my attention because the whole performance was how the artist programed the computer and then let it randomly have a mind of it’s own. The computer made music, beats and explored many new and creative performances. This made me reflect about how the artist did something so aesthetically pleasing, yet mechanically engineered. This was a great artist to show because it formed a nice leeway into thinking about a final project. During the last half of class we were introduced the final project. I started to think about what I wanted to do and how I was going to express my thought process. My inspiration board was a large part into how I chose the content I did. Overall, I am excited with where this will take me and the different possibilities that I can come up with.
New Forms, New Media : Reflection/ Homework
During class were were shown how to use the embroidery machine and the lazer cutter! This was such fun and new experience for me, I was able to learn a lot and understand the different possibilities. In the pictures above, I designed the design in illustrator and then lazer cut the images. This experience was a lot of fun and had many bumps along the road but I was able to create a cool and asethetic project from it! In total I created nine coasters and four outlined letters. Overall, I am really happy with my product and I can't wait to use them!
New Media, New Forms Homework
For homework we were told to make our own name patch. We were instructed that we could only use three colors and as many shapes as we wanted. This was fun mixing and matching colors to make an interesting patch that brought dimension and a sense of pop art. Overall, this experience was fun and I am excited to see what it ends up looking like!
New Media, New Forms Reflection (Class 7)
During this class there was a another teacher teaching the class that went further into developing 2D and 3D models. During the start of the class we were shown how to use the 3D printer and how the process works. She printed out one of my 3D models before class in her own studio (in the bottom photo), so I got see both ends of the result. This was a fun process to learn and it was exciting to see the many possibilities that can be taken.
Once the process was done being explained, we went down stairs to the lab and we began to go into illustrator. We were given the chance to go in depth with how illustrator works and the different basic steps that take place in the program. The first image shows me playing round with the different affects as we followed along. This was a great way to get to know the program and reintroduce it to the class.
After we were done with illustrator, we went back upstairs and were shown the process of 2D printing with a lazer cutter and embroidery machine. This was interesting to see all the different projects that her students have done and it excited me about what is to come.
New Media, New Forms (Homework)
After looking through all of the different websites that 3D modeling and printing can be done on, I chose to use tinkercad. When experimenting, I thought it was easiest to look up different tutorials and further understand the program. This was a lot easier to go about what I wanted to do in this particular program. As I started my new project, I wanted to “play” around with the different shapes and irregularities. As I started to develop my understandings, I saw an animal out of the different forms I was creating. As the shapes started to take meaning, I thought it resembled a turtle, so I continued with this and got my 3D model. I had a lot of fun creating this piece and I would like to further understand the different meanings of 3D modeling and printing. Overall, I learned a lot from this process and I am excited to see where this will take me.
New Media, New Forms Reflection (Class 7)
For this class our teacher was out and we had another teacher showing us how to 3D model. At the beginning of the class for the first hour, a professional trainer in Rhino came in and showed us all about the program. It was interesting to see a professionals opinion and preview to the 3D modeling world. We were able to see a great introduction to 3D modeling and the way math is behind geometry. We were also introduced to the new feature that hasn’t come out yet called grasshopper. This was fun to see because it showed further dimensions of 3D modeling and printing.
As the class went on we were able to see different possible ways to make 3D print through 3D modeling. My favorite that we used was tinkercad because I was able to visually see the formation of the 3D modeling and it made it easier for me to understand the geometry that was occurring.
After we viewed the different 3D modeling possibilities, we saw the actuality of making the 3D models and when combining them together in a toaster it made glass. This was fun to see the different representations and so called “failures” of 3D modeling and printing. Overall, this class was a lot of fun and very insightful!
New Forms, New Media (Homework)
This video was recorded with three others. We created sounds from sractch.com and explored with the different sounds to hook to the Makey Makey. The Makey Makey was hooked up to colorful pipe cleaners that when pressed with one hand and held with the main wire with the other, it creates a musical instrument of your own. This was a fun way to explore with the new material and understand the different technology that is behind it. It was interesting to combine ideas with other students and collaborate with the new material given to us. Overall, I am excited to see where this will take me and hopefully use it to create other future objects.
New Media, New Forms Reflection (Class 6)
At the beginning of class we were shown two different artists. One was Rosa Menkman, who is a digital and technology artist. This artist is one of my favorites that was shown so far throughout the different technology classes. When shown her artwork, it was explained to us that she was a glitch and video artist and throughout her time making art she wanted to break down the norms. Rosa’s thinking was that she wanted to create the disorder in an artwork and show that this wasn't a bad thing. It shows a different way to view something and there are many different interpretations that can occur.
Another artist that was shown was David O’Reilly. We were shown, “The External World” which was a video of many different animations and comical features. This video referenced animations and media that we grew up with and helped us follow along to make connections. This video created an idea of questioning chaos and disorder and had the viewer create an open mind when watching the video. Overall, I didn't enjoy this video because I couldn't relate to the content that was in it and it felt a little childlike when viewing the different animations.
As the class went on we were shown the start to Makey Makey. This is a technology piece that is used externally and hooked up to the computer to create different sounds, which activate as the Makey Makey is pressed. This was a fun experimentation and I am excited to work with partners to create my own artwork.
New Media, New Forms (Homework)
For this homework, I wanted to create the idea of repetition and a pattern, which is represented in the bottom image. I did this by repeating the same occurrence throughout twenty different rows and when played it is rolled across from the left side of the page to the right side of the page. By doing this I create repetition and movement within the piece that captures the viewers eye due to the wide range of color and motion. This was a fun piece to make because I was able to experience the formation of the pattern and play around with the amount of rows that were presented.
In the second artwork I created, it was done on scratch and I was able to create a line drawing that moved randomly. This created movement within the piece and also added a color aspect because every time the dot was touched by the mouse, it is suppose to change colors and every time the two colors overlap, it changes to a different color. I had a difficult time intertwining all of these different movements and it ended up just creating an overlapping of two colors. This was fun to play with on scratch because it brings the video game like touch to the project and makes you think about the different ways movement and color can be intertwined.
Overall, with this homework I had a lot of fun experimenting with the different shapes, lines, techniques, colors and movements. I am hoping that I can further explore the idea of movement and how it can be affected on different levels in the future.
