Looked through the shoplifting tag on here and I am appalled. I work in retail at Sunglass Hut and let me tell you shoplifting is ridiculous. We have a goal each week that we need to make and if we get shoplifted from the glasses get subtracted from our sales for the week. It sucks when I can make commission, but then miss it because a person shoplifts. Also shoplifting at Sunglass Hut is a horrible idea because there are never open spaces in the store where a pair of glasses are supposed to be. When a pair of glasses are sold, we must immediately go and fill that hole. If there’s a hole and we automatically suspect that the last person in the store has shoplifted.
TLDR: Any who shoplifts, I hope you get caught. I don’t care what you stand for. All you’re doing is hurting the low paid workers at the store. Please get a retail job and see what it’s like getting shoplifted from
1. That’s wage theft and that’s illegal. Take it up with your employers and a lawyer if that happens because employees can’t have their wages garnished (even if it’s commission) because of shoplifting.
2. Shut the hell up, capitalism is shitty and not worth you whining about the $15 sunglasses someone stole.
3. Shoplifting only hurts the COMPANY - AND BARELY. Big places like Walmart actually GET money from shrink insurance so no, it doesn’t hurt low wage workers because again, that’s wage theft and illegal.
1) It’s not my wage that is being garnished. It’s commission which we get when we meet our goal. I still get paid my regular eage no matter what. I get commission which is essentially a bonus when we meet our sales goal for the week or month
2) I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a sunglass hut, but we don’t sell $15 sunglasses. Our cheapest pair is $79.99 on sale. The average cost per pair is around $180 depending on what brands you sell.
3) I never said shoplifting hurts the company. Luxottica, which owns sunglass hut is the biggest retailer of eyewear in the world, so I don’t think they’ll be hit with much of a loss because of one pair stolen. However, it does hurt me, a worker. I work part time while I go to college. I need as much money as I can get to pay my college bills. When I could make an extra $90 from commission it really helps me out. Though when somebody steals, however much those glasses are, the cost gets subtracted from our sales for the week. When I’m one sale away from making commission and I get shoplifted from, it really sucks.
I don’t know about other companies such as walmart that you mentioned, but this is how sunglass hut works. All I’m saying is don’t shoplift. It sucks for workers like me who need to pay bills.
Then you need to call a lawyer because taking away your commission is still a form of wage theft. Workplacefairness.org/deductions-from-pay
Again, it’s not shoplifters hurting you, it’s your greedy employers.
Please google commission and see that commission or any other bonuses, at least in my state, are not considered part of my wage. It’s a bonus and I can have my bonus not given to me if I don’t meet my sales goal. I’m not going to take this up with my work because I enjoy it very much because of all the perks. I will not battle my workplace because it can be solved by people not shoplifting
Your employer CAN NOT TAKE AWAY COMMISSION FOR REASONS NOT SPECIFIED IN YOUR CONTRACT which you had to sign prior to receiving any kind of commission, which is not the same as a bonus.
Then don’t battle your employers for basically stealing from you I don’t care, but look at who you’re really blaming here. Not your employers who are stealing from you, but people who are stealing from your employers - when it doesn’t hurt them!
If you don’t want to take it up with your employers, then don’t fucking whine about shoplifters.
I even provided you a website that shows that they can not take away your commission and you still want to play dumb, like alright, can’t help you anymore than I already have.
I don’t think ypu understand how commission works at sunglass hut. In order for me to make commission, I have to meet my sales goal. Say my sales goal is 1200 for the week. On saturday, which is the last day of the sales week, I am $200 away from meeting my sales goal, so essentially all I need to do is sell one pair. A person comes in and they steal a $200 pair from my store. Aftee contacting my boss and doing all the paper work that deals with stealing, $200, the cost of the stolen pair is subtracted from my stores sales for the week. This is also done whenever a pair is returned because we are not selling a pair, thus losing money/giving money back. I am now $400 away from my goal. One more person comes in and buys a pair for $200, thus putting me back at $200 away from goal. No one else comes in, so I’m left at $200 away from goal, so I won’t be making commission.
I was never guaranteed commission. All I had to do was meet my sales goal, but since someone came in and stole, so I was unable to. Like I said, money is also subtracted from our sales goal when somebkdy returns a pair. This is because we are giving back money. The same goes for when someone steals because we are losing a product worth money that we cannot sell.
Still wage theft hun.
Why do you hate poor people so much jw?
Okay, but here is another perspective. I work with clothes in retail, and I don’t make commission. Now, however we call sales. If a costumer is going up to the register, we call over our headsets that it was “my sale” and my number is recorded under that transaction so the sale goes to me. They can track how well I’m selling, with some leeway with missed customers or shared sales. My sales dictate my hours. If I do really well, I’ll get more hours than my coworker who didn’t sell as much for the next week. Especially around this time of year when there are no hours, and you’re trying to pay off tuition, hours are really nice. Say an item is returned, and it was under my sale, I get deducted money, just like OP does. Same happens if something is stolen, it takes away from my tracked sales. We know when something is stolen. That takes away from my potential hours, which means less money for me, which means less money for groceries. Woo.
If you are caught stealing, you can go to jail, pay a fine, or hopefully be let off with a warning. I think isn’t worth it. If you have to pay a $200 fine for a $20 shirt, it isn’t worth it. Employers don’t care why stuff was stolen or how, it’s just your fault and you get deducted. Stealing is a shitty thing to do. If you’re in need, I get the temptation, but that’s taking away from employees who are also in need.
Plus, commission doesn’t have to be payed. It’s a reward. If you don’t get an A on a test, you don’t get that sticker. It’s just that basic. You still get a decent mark just no sticker. No bonus. No extra money, that can be used for gas, or books or food. Also, the link you provided doesn’t cover OP’s situation. It isn’t wage theft, it just sucks. And If you’re working, it means you need money as well. Don’t assume they hate poor people because they want to be well off as well.
(Ps. If you need sunglasses that badly, why not steal a cheap pair from Walmart then?)
Thank you!
More white upper class women who have no idea how good they have it and have no idea what they’re talking about.
I'm not white, but okay. Again I'm sorry that I work for what I want amd try to prevent people from stealing what they do not need.

Why do you hate poor people so much jw?
Oh my fucking god, just because she doesn’t want people to steal =/= hating poor people, you pretentious fuckwit. Your argument is no longer about commission. It’s about stealing. Is stealing right because you don’t like a corporation and you don’t like capitalism and fuck those people? No. Is advocating against stealing “hating poor people”? No, you ass trumpet. Even if it’s not about commission, do you know who does get in trouble when shit gets stolen in retail? The minimum wage workers for not preventing it.
Not sure if your “you hate poor people” rhetoric comes from a strawman fallacy, an ad hominem one, or a slippery slope, but any of the choices are absolute shit. It’s not about “poor people”; it’s about theft. Why are you assuming that poor people are the people who are stealing, huh? No one mentioned poor people except you.
You can try to justify theft all you want with your capitalism bullshit or your “you hate poor people” fuck-all argument, or whatever the hell else, but it’s fucking illegal and they’re *sunglasses*. They’re usually nonessentials and it’s just blindly stealing shit. You are hurting workers who get negative feedback from employers and get in trouble for not patrolling enough or doing enough to prevent theft. You’re right: it won’t really touch the large corporations. They couldn’t give a shit about one pair but you are hurting the working class who has to deal with your bullshit that affects their job and how their job performance is seen.
Get out of here with your stupid ass argument.
Thank you!

Why do you hate people who are trying to make money to pay their way through college and prevent people from shoplifting?
PLEASE
it’s literally 8 in the morning and I already wanna go back to sleep
The shoplifting community is full of self entitled brats and they should be fucking ashamed of themselves. Most of them aren’t even shoplifting necessities like food or clothes, they’re stealing expensive makeup and lingerie and jewelry. Things they don’t fucking need. How can someone be so selfish?
I work as a supervisor and let me tell you I know what you mean and you are right. It just sucks and its being fucked up over by two fronts at the same time and I wish us employers had more of a say in the matter.
I agree. I know people steal because it's necessary in their circumstance, but you don't need to be stealimg designer items to get back at large corporations because it fucks me over

They keep us complicit in capitalism and labour exploitation by neglecting to tell us our rights and that’s how they steal money from you without your knowledge. All the while blaming lower class people who dare shoplift from their massive chain stores and placing the blame for everything on those shoplifters. It’s capitalist propaganda created specifically to shift the blame from money thirsty billion dollar corporations to poor people just trying to get by. They’re demonising poor people in order to keep you complicit, quiet and in line 😊
Why would a poor person shoplift from a sunglass store though? I somewhat understand stealing food or other necessities like hygiene products, but sunglasses? Yeah you could sell for a high price, but if you’re willing to steal from a sunglass hut, then why not go steal from somewhere else. Sunglasses are not a need, they are a want. If you want a pair of designer sunglasses that much to the point you would steal, then go out and get a job to pay for them yourself instead.
Oh wow I’m so sorry that poor people wanting nice things to make themselves feel better is inconveniencing you. I guess poor people should only steal cans of $2 beans to feed themselves right… Lmao poor people should only steal cheap this they might already be able to afford. I’m so glad a rich girl is telling me this :-)
I’m not a rich girl. I’m paying my way by myself through college. I want nice things too. I would love a pair of Ray Band that some my classmates can buy for themselves with no second thought. I work hard to provide for myself and buy things that I truly want. I’m not saying that a low class person can only steal cheap cans of soup. What I’m saying is if you’re going to tske the risk to steal, then steal something you truly need like a nice wool coat or a pair of shoes. Not a pair of $200 glasses that you can find a knockoff of from targer for $15.
I’m sorry that I work hard for my money that puts me through college and that people stealing from me is an inconvenience between my money and I.
Okay well you’re talking to a girl who lives in housing commission off a disability pension that’s less than half of what minimum wage earners get if they work part time. To me you’re rich lmao, if I wanna shoplift some ugly ass sunglasses, you can’t stop me 😊
I'm sorry for your position, but if you're going to take that risk and steal designer sunglasses rather than something you truly need, I hope karma catches up to you and you get caught

I would also like to point a text I reblogged a few minutes ago explaining how they are in no way keeping my money from me.
