先般、千葉市美術館の「おとぎの国のモードを探して〜Fairy Tale MODE（〜8/30）」を訪ねました。

赤ずきんやシンデレラなど童話の挿絵を中心に、時代の雰囲気に沿ったオートクチュールのドレスも飾られている多角的な展示でした。ビアズリーやニールセンの作品と共にディオールのドレスも楽しめる贅沢な空間です。

不勉強で恥ずかしいのですが、今回はイギリスの挿絵画家であるアーサー•ラッカムを知る事が出来て大きな収穫でした😊

また、同時開催（企画展チケットがあれば無料）の「なぞとき！日本の物語絵」では国芳の「相馬の古内裏」や月岡芳年の「『芳年漫画』土蜘蛛と坂田金時」など見ることができます。

かなり充実した内容ですのでご興味ある方はぜひオススメです✨

I recently visited the exhibition “In Search of Fairy-Tale Fashion: Fairy Tale MODE (through August 30)” at the Chiba City Museum of Art.

It was a multifaceted exhibition centered on illustrations from fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella, featuring haute couture dresses that captured the spirit of their respective eras. It was a truly luxurious space where visitors could enjoy Dior dresses alongside works by Beardsley and Nielsen.

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit my lack of knowledge, but discovering the British illustrator Arthur Rackham was a major highlight of this visit for me 😊

Also, the concurrent exhibition “Unravel the Mystery! Japanese Story Illustrations” (free with a ticket to the main exhibition) features works such as Kuniyoshi’s “The Old Imperial Palace at Soma” and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s “Tsuchigumo and Sakata Kintoki” from the *Yoshitoshi Manga* series.

The content is quite rich, so I highly recommend it to anyone interested ✨

昨年下半期から今年にかけて、慢性的に体調が優れない日々が続いていました。

とはいえ私も42歳、加齢によるものかと思っていたのですが純粋に具合が悪かったようです😅

今は服薬しつつ、9月に人生初の手術を受けることになりました。命に関わるものではないのですが、ちょっとショックです。

不安の中、尊敬する画家であり人生の大先輩である方に心情を溢してしまったところ、「これから失っていくものが多くなる中でどう生きていくか、お互い考えるね」とお言葉をいただきました。

しみじみ、本当にそうだな、と思います。

先般Yahoo!ニュースの記事で見たのですが、2025年の日本人の平均寿命は女性が87.33歳だそうです。

しかしながら、私は酒に溺れる不摂生の身上ですので到底この寿命には達しないでしょう。

私と同じタイプ（嗜好、生活環境）だった父は70歳で亡くなりましたが、性差はさておき遺伝的要素も鑑みればこちらの寿命に近いのではないかなと思われます。

それを考えると私の残り年数は28〜45年くらいのバッファーでしょうか。

改めて自分の時計を巻き直さないといけません。

とりあえず今は混沌としている自室とアトリエの整理整頓を始めています…！

From the second half of last year through this year, I’ve been feeling chronically unwell.

That said, I’m 42 now, so I thought it might just be due to aging, but it seems I was genuinely unwell 😅

I’m currently on medication, and I’m scheduled to undergo my first-ever surgery in September. Unless something unexpected happens, it’s not life-threatening, but to be honest, it’s a bit of a shock.

Amid my anxiety, I poured out my feelings to a painter I deeply respect—someone much older and wiser than me—and he said to me, “As we face the things we’ll lose from here on out, let’s both think about how we’re going to live.” It really struck a chord with me; I thought, “That’s so true.”

I saw an article on Yahoo! News the other day stating that by 2025, the average life expectancy for Japanese women will be 87.33 years, ranking first in the world. However, given my unhealthy, night-owl lifestyle—which includes excessive drinking—I’ll likely fall far short of that age.

My father, who was just like me, passed away at age 70, so factoring in genetic factors, I suspect my lifespan will be closer to his. With that in mind, I estimate I have a buffer of about 28 to 45 years left.

I need to reset my internal clock. For now, I’ve started tidying up my chaotic bedroom and studio.

It’s been far too long since I last wrote.

My laziness when it comes to writing has kept me off social media for quite some time.

How has everyone been?

Actually, I’ve been working behind the scenes on a gin label design project! Those of you who know I love alcohol are probably thinking, “I see… finally…”

This gin, “Nessie’s Favorite Blooms,” has a gorgeous aroma reminiscent of blooming gorse flowers, with notes of honey, juniper, and earthy undertones. Personally, I think it’s best served with tonic water 🥰

And starting at noon today, this gin will be available for tasting and purchase at the Cocktail Market being held at Kichijoji Copis ✨ If you’re in the area, please stop by! (I’ll be there having a drink myself!)

From today until 30 March, I am taking part in the ‘Panse Exhibition’ at Gallery A in Yokohama Minato Mirai!

This exhibition is a showcase for the painting classes organised by Mr Motoro Mouri, where I have learnt not only about drawing but also about the life of a painter.

I am exhibiting three recent works, as shown in the image.

No works will be for sale at this exhibition.

It has been a while since I last exhibited in the Kanto region, so I would be delighted if you could come and see the exhibition if you have the opportunity.

1月も半ばではありますが、今年も干支絵馬のデザインさせていただいてます鹿島神宮さんにお参りしました。今回は正面から優しく見守ってくれている馬を描いています。

自分の絵馬を絵馬掛けに奉納したところ、どなたかの絵馬に気になる四字熟語が。

「酔生夢死（すいせいむし）」。

お酒好きの自分としては気になるワードなので調べてみました。

どうやら中国北宋時代の儒学者、程顥（ていこう）が残した『程子語録（ていしごろく）』に載っている一節のようです。

「雖高才明智、膠于見聞、酔生夢死不自覚也」とあり、

「才能や知識があっても、得た知識に固執して自分自身の真理を見出せないと、酔ったように生きて夢の中で死ぬような、無自覚で無意味な生涯を送ることになる」という、君子への戒めの言葉でした。

なかなか耳に痛い言葉です😅

とはいえこれも良いきっかけ、改めまして一日一日を大切に生きていかなきゃいけないなぁと思う今日この頃でした。

（でも今年もお酒は飲みます🍻）

It's already mid-January, but I visited Kashima Shrine, where I'm designing this year's zodiac ema again. This time, I drew a horse watching over us gently from the front.

After dedicating my own ema to the ema rack, I noticed a four-character idiom on someone else's ema that caught my attention:

“Suisēmushi” (酔生夢死).

As someone who enjoys drinking, this phrase intrigued me, so I looked it up.

It seems to be a passage from the “Chōshi Goroku” (程子語録), a collection of sayings left by Cheng Hao (程顥), a Confucian scholar from China's Northern Song Dynasty.

It reads: “雖高才明智、膠于見聞、酔生夢死不自覚也“

It was a cautionary warning to the noble-minded: even with talent and knowledge, clinging to acquired wisdom without discovering one's own truth leads to a meaningless life, lived in drunken oblivion and dreamlike death.

Quite a painful reminder to hear, isn't it? 😅

Still, it's a good opportunity. Lately, I've been thinking I really must live each day more carefully and meaningfully.

(But I'll still be drinking this year too. 🍻)

【ぶらり京都旅3】

京都旅の最後、お客様にガイドしてもらって訪ねましたのは東福寺頭塔 光明院さんです。

こちらは石庭が非常に魅力的で、お庭の様々な角度から拝見することができます。広縁に座ってくつろいだり、お抹茶をいただいたりと、のんびり過ごせるところは今の京都では少ないのではないでしょうか。

また現在、日本画家の丹羽優太さんが3年住み込みで制作した襖絵が公開されています。独自の妖怪がユーモラス＆絵肌が素敵でした！

私もいつかこういう趣深い場所で展示できるといいなぁなんて思いつつ、京都を後にしたのでした。

…というブログを書きつつ、なぜか今日もまた関西にいたり…関西に一拠点必要かも😅

【Kyoto Wanderings 3】

For the final stop on our Kyoto journey, guided by our guests, we visited Tofukuji Temple's head temple, Komyo-in.

Its rock garden is exceptionally charming, offering views from various angles. Sitting on the wide veranda to relax or enjoying matcha tea, it's a rare place in Kyoto today where you can spend time so leisurely.

Also currently on display are fusuma paintings created by Japanese painter Yuta Niwa during his three-year residency. His unique yokai were humorous, and the texture of the paintings was wonderful!

I left Kyoto thinking how nice it would be to exhibit in such a profoundly charming place someday.

As I write this blog post, somehow I find myself back in Kansai again today... Maybe I need a base here in Kansai 😅

【ぶらり京都旅2】

今度は苔寺から歩いて10分程度のところにある、月読神社さんへ。御祭神の月読命（ツクヨミノミコト）は天照大神と素戔嗚の兄弟神です。

天照大神は太陽、月読命は月を表すこともあり、月読は重要なポジションにいると思うのですが、記紀でも登場回数が少なく影が薄い印象。

農耕民族にとって、太陽のありがたみが月に優ってしまったのかもしれませんね。個人的には魅力ある神様だと思ってます🌙

続いて松尾大社さんへ。

こちらは神社と土地を守護した渡来系の秦氏が酒造りを行ったことに由来して、お酒の神様として有名になっています。

お酒が大好きな一個人として、しっかりじっくりお参りさせていただきました😅ちなみに入館料をお支払いして見ることができる、3種類の石庭や、一木造りの女神像（市杵島姫）などは非常に魅力的ですので、お時間ある方はぜひのんびり散策してみてくださいね。

次回は光明院のご紹介です。

【Kyoto Wanderings 2】

Next, I walked about 10 minutes from the Moss Temple to Tsukuyomi Shrine. Its enshrined deity, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, is the brother of Amaterasu-ōmikami and Susanoo-no-Mikoto.

Since Amaterasu represents the sun and Tsukuyomi represents the moon, Tsukuyomi seems to hold an important position. Yet, even in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, he appears infrequently and feels somewhat overshadowed.

Perhaps for an agricultural people, the sun's importance simply overshadowed the moon. Personally, I find him a fascinating deity 🌙

Next, I headed to Matsuo Taisha.

This shrine is famous as the deity of sake, originating from the immigrant Hata clan who protected the shrine and land here and engaged in sake brewing.

As someone who absolutely loves sake, I paid my respects thoroughly and with great reverence. 😅 By the way, the three types of rock gardens and the single-piece wooden statue of the goddess (Ichikishimahime), which you can see by paying an admission fee, are incredibly charming. If you have time, I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll around the grounds.

Next time, I'll introduce Komyo-in Temple.

【ぶらり京都旅1】

今回は予約をしないと入れない、苔寺こと西芳寺さんにお参り。

完全に海外の方向けになっており入場料がお高い＆写経が物足りない😅のですが、広いお庭を散策するのは久しぶりで楽しかったです。

近くには古墳群があり、時間と装備があれば遺跡探検もしたかったところ…！

紅葉の気配を感じつつ、次は月詠神社＆松尾大社に向かいます。

【Kyoto Wanderings 1】

This time, I visited Saiho-ji Temple, also known as the Moss Temple, which requires reservations to enter.

It's clearly geared toward foreign visitors—the admission fee is steep, and the sutra copying felt a bit lacking 😅—but it was fun to stroll through the spacious garden after so long.

Nearby are ancient burial mounds—if I'd had the time and gear, I would've loved exploring the ruins too...!

Feeling the hint of autumn colors approaching, next I'm heading to Tsukuyomi Shrine & Matsuo Taisha.

【ぶらり奈良旅】

友人と15？回目の正倉院展遠足ということで、昨日は奈良を訪れました。

今回、私のお気に入りの正倉院宝物は「鳥毛篆書屏風（とりげてんしょのびょうぶ）」です。（正倉院展HPより引用）

こちらは為政者にとっての格言を篆書（てんしょ）と楷書（かいしょ）で交互に綴ったものです。黒く見える篆書の部分には上からキジなどの羽根を貼り付けており、ユニークな存在感が魅力的でした。

古民家風カフェで猫と目があったり、地酒を楽しんだりと奈良を満喫させてもらい、今日は大阪をメインに散策中。

明日は京都です！

【A Stroll Through Nara】

Yesterday, I visited Nara with friends for what must be our 15th trip to the Shōsōin Treasure Exhibition.

This time, my favorite treasure from the Shōsōin was “Folding Screen Panels with Seal-Script Characters in Bird Feathers.” (Quoted from the Shōsōin Exhibition website)

This piece alternates between seal script (tensho) and regular script (Kaisho) to spell out maxims for rulers. The seal script sections, which appear black, have feathers from birds like pheasants affixed on top. Its unique presence was captivating.

I enjoyed Nara to the fullest—making eye contact with a cat at an old-style cafe, savoring local sake—and today I'm exploring mainly around Osaka.

Tomorrow, it's Kyoto!

【京都個展　後日談】

いまXで狸が話題なので、先日起きた不思議な話をひとつ。

京都個展の最終日、お客様の波が過ぎほっと一息ついたところ、作品前に見慣れぬものが…。

それは青々しい銀杏の葉。

銀杏の葉が置かれた作品は、落語の「まめだ」をテーマに狸を描いたもの。

実は「まめだ」の作品中、怪我をした豆狸が銀杏の葉をお金に変えて薬を買いに来るというエピソードがあります。

ひょっとして狸がお仲間を見に来たのかしら…と思わずほっこりしました☺️

でも狸さん、当方の個展は入場無料だし、出所不明の植物を置いていかれるのは不味いので、次回はお代は不要ですよ〜。

【Kyoto Solo Exhibition: A Postscript】

Since tanuki are trending on X right now, here's a strange story from the other day.

On the final day of my Kyoto solo exhibition, after the wave of visitors had passed and I finally caught my breath, I noticed something unfamiliar in front of one of my pieces...

It was a fresh, green ginkgo leaf.

The piece where the ginkgo leaf was placed featured a raccoon dog drawn based on the rakugo story “Mameda.”

In the “Mameda” story, an injured raccoon dog transforms a ginkgo leaf into money to buy medicine.

I couldn't help but feel warm inside, thinking that maybe the raccoon had come to see its friend☺️

But raccoon dog, my solo exhibition is free admission, and leaving plants of unknown origin isn't ideal. Next time, no payment needed~.

画像は新作「白兎羽子板跳（しろうさぎはごいたとび）」

羽子板の歴史は古く、宮中や神社などで魔除けなどの神事に使われていました。羽子板の羽根は無患子（むくろじ）の実に鳥の羽を付けたものであり、その形をトンボに見立てています。これは疾病の元である蚊や蝿等をトンボが追い払うことを意味しており、羽根突きをする事で厄払いになるといわれています。

The image is my new work “Shirousagi Hagoita-tobi”.

Hagoita has a long history, having been used in religious ceremonies at the Imperial Court and shrines to ward off evil spirits. The feathers on the hagoita are made from the fruit of the soapberry plant (Mukuroji) with bird feathers attached, and their shape resembles a dragonfly. This represents the dragonfly's ability to drive away mosquitoes and flies, which are the source of disease, and playing hagoita is said to ward off evil spirits.
