On the landing path to Frankfurt airport
The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi (Igreja da Pampulha), in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1943. CIt features bold parabolic concrete vaults, murals by Candido Portinari, ceramic panels by Paulo Werneck, sculptures by Alfredo Ceschiatti, and landscaping by Roberto Burle Marx.
Although completed in 1943, it was only consecrated in 1959.
Since 2016 is #Unesco listed.

Lausanne Building is a pair of identical residential towers designed in 1958 by Franz Heep, pioneer of middle-class apartment housing in São Paulo. Considered a landmark of Brazilian #modernism, it features colorful sliding sun-shading panels that create a changing mosaic effect on the façade. The complex has 15 floors, 60 apartments, 4 per floor, 180 square meters each.

Balyeat’s was founded in 1924 to accommodate the swarms of Lincoln Highway travelers that passed at its door. It was closed for good in the Summer of 2016.

Galeria do Rock

Galeria do Rock is a shopping mall in São Paulo, opened in 1963. Located between Rua 24 de Maio and Largo do Paissandu, it houses about 450 shops focused on rock, hip hop, and other music cultures, selling records, clothing, and tattoo services. It is also a live music venue and a major gathering place for São Paulo’s urban subcultures.

Arch. Lina Bo Bardi transformed the former factory into SESC Pompeia. Preserving the industrial buildings, she added two Brutalist concrete sports towers linked by eight walkways and opened the interiors for community use. The complex hosts sport facilities, swimming pool, theatre, public spaces, etc. 1977-86, São Paulo, Brazil.

The Louveira Building is a landmark of São Paulo modernism. Designed by João Batista Vilanova Artigas, it reflects his shift from Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence toward Le Corbusier’s rationalism, using concrete structures, columns, and ramps typical of modern architecture.

On the day we went, it was a weekday, but since there was a strike, no students or university staff were around. It was a huge, beautiful, empty, and silent building; almost like a cathedral. The banner in the center clearly said, “greve = strike.”

Hotel Brasilia Palace

It opened alongside the nearby presidential residence and soon became a social hub for politicians and celebrities, hosting figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and Che Guevara. The hotel is known for its floating modernist style. A 1978 fire forced its closure for over twenty years before a major restoration led to its reopening in 2006.
