Despite leading this section, no further info is actually given on these three classic Microman mecha here, which is a shame given they are all exemplars of the period.
Conning Tower Base M-115
Upper image caption: Control Panel (Operation Room)
The central control panel where commands are sent to Micromen all over the world. Jets are equipped on the body, allowing the base to move to any location
The main body contains a super high-performance photon engine, an anti-gravity device, and photon energy absorption cells, serving as the energy source for the entire base.
Middle image caption: Photon Engine
Each component has its own built-in independent power device and minicomputer enabling the base to transform into multiple configurations following commands from the Operation Room.
Lower image caption: Tower Base Transformed
The M115 "Conning Tower" Base set was the original, first Microman base released at the end of 1974, a perfect all-in-one playset for the four original barefoot Microman Zone figures. It would receive a couple of production runs and was also one of the first larger sets a couple of years later as the Micronauts' Mobile Exploration Lab (affectionately called "MEL" by long-time fans), with only the only alteration being a single safety tipped missile launcher replacing the original chromed double pointed missile launcher (though it would serve as the basis for the non-firing double launcher features later on the alien Hornetroid ornithopter).
However, the design was not as well suited for non-barefoot riders, leading to a significant redesign for an upgrade released in the 1979 Microman Rescue sub-series.
RoadStation Base
The traffic control center for Micromen. It monitors the movement of all cars. Upon discovering an unidentified flying object or other vehicles in the vicinity, the base immediately enters full combat readiness.

The control room, which could be called the “ears” of the RoadStation Base, captures every bit of information from all over the planet.
The Conning Station works tirelessly to protect the safety of the "Microman Air Routes", the paths through the sky and sea used by Micromen.
Left image caption: Conning Station serving as defensive countermeasures
It's no coincidence these two iconic playsets are shown together and are often displayed together as they originally were both part of a larger unified city playset concept design which also included a parking garage and other features that would later be echoed on later sets such as Titan Command Base and Build Base, such as a crane.
Cosmo Cars
Cosmo Porsche: At a glance, it looks like an ordinary Porsche, but when faced with the Acroyears, it can transform into a dragster in a split-second: what a remarkable machine!
Cosmo Countach: To fool the Acroyear and their minions, it is often displayed at hobby shops. However, during battle, high-performance Microman weapons emerge from its undercarriage.
This appears to have been made before the Cosmo Countach transformation was finalized, as the inset image shows a dragster form similar to the Cosmo Porsche and the description doesn't really match the more famous alternate half-robot mode that has been believed to been an inspiration for the Diaclone Car Robots a few years later. Interestingly, the same Porsche model would also receive a Diaclone treatment, the two better known together later still in Transformers as the characters Sunstreaker and Jazz.
Command Cars
Earth Jetter: Developed by Microman Command, this jet fighter can perform horizontal and vertical take-offs and landings as needed in battle. It stands up against the Acroyears with its 2,800-horsepower Superhydrogen Engine.
Twin Racer: Capable of travel on any rough road, it fires photon missiles and super-vacuum guns while dodging between the feet of the giant Acroyears. It too was developed by Microman Command and is also known as the “Skeleton”.
The Earth Jetter is the only Command Car to reflect the "ancient alien" theme of the Command Series, being based directly on an Incan sculpture resembling a jet fighter (but was more likely depicting a fish or mythical creature).
Command Cars
Racing Buggy: Developed by Microman Command for speed, to help investigate ancient ruins and find sleeping comrades around the world. It is loaded with electronic features such as information-storage devices.
Tyrrell Machine: This machine was also built for investigation, but like the racing buggies, it performs so well that the Command teams have been neglecting their work to spend all their time on speed contests and rallies.
Spy Cars
Marine Condor: A super spy machine primarily used for espionage activities at sea. It has hydro-engines in its wings. Speed: 100 knots at sea, 450 km/h in the air.
*A travel speed of one knot is equal to one nautical mile (1,852 meters) per hour
Sea Spyder: This is the underwater-focused spy machine. It can withstand 1,000 tons of water pressure and travel through the deep sea at a speed of 50 knots. It is used to sneak into the seabed to uncover the Acroyears’ secret plans.
Of the six released Spy Cars, three were released as Micronaut vehicles with some alterations. The original Spy Cars each had one or two secondary "spy" play features/gimmicks. Marine Condor had a little spring loaded roulette wheel of character images you could "call" on it like a communication device. This was removed from the Micronaut "Aquatron" and its color was changed from green to orange.
Sea Spider had a little magnet based game as its extra gimmick and was molded mostly in translucent clear and opaque blue plastic. Both it and Marine Condor came with a battery powered propeller attachment that had been previously used in Marine Copter (aka Micronauts' HydroCopter).
Spy Cars
Racing Wolf: when electronic countermeasures are preventing radio communication, this machine becomes a courier. With its 900-horsepower photon wave engine, it can reach a top speed of Mach 5. It can also fly off the ground with an on-board autopilot.
Drag Tiger: A small, three-wheeled motorcycle that can travel at 500 kilometers per hour. Designed for espionage, it can be flipped over to reveal a specialized crossbow on the underside.
Drag Tiger was given a heavy die-cast silver-gray body as the Micronauts' "Neon Orbiter", its crossbow gimmick was removed, a 5mm seat peg was added to better secure a rider, its plastic orange parts recast in white, and additional red plastic parts were added from a totally different Takara toy, the Gowapper 5 Turtle Tank. The original Drag Tiger had no die-cast and was a subtle dark purple that appears black when not brightly lit.
Racing Wolf never saw a Micronauts release, perhaps due to its similarity to Formula Z, which did see release as Warp Racer. Cast in dark blue and white plastic, it featured wheels that doubled as tops and a small dart launcher. It was however among some Microman toys that were imported to America by some retail distributors, as this writer personally witnessed one on a K-Mart shelf in Michigan in December of 1977!
Spy-Cars
Gyro Panther: No matter where the Acroyears hide, they won't escape this! Besides having incredible speed, Gyro Panther can fly through even the narrowest gaps, as small as a 15-centimeter opening. It's truly a spy machine for the urban landscape.
Jet Mirror: Leave aerial combat to this one! It's equipped with radar and an autopilot, allowing it to fly at Mach 2 even through a typhoon. In addition to a warp flight device that allows it to travel through four dimensions, it's also equipped with laser guns and missiles.
Gyro Panther is an unusual looking vehicle with a periscope, crossbow, and rubber band propelled drone flyer. It never saw a Micronauts release, but its colors are the same as chosen for the Aquatron version of Marine Condor. While it appears a little bit in the manga, it was also prominent in the MAFF Microman fan circle's self-published manga as the main vehicle at first for a lone black and purple Spy Magician named Dean. The manga artist behind it, Yasuhiko Enari, would later go on to create his own Microman-adjacent Astro Midget series (licensed to Bandai as Beta Midget Gashapon toys).
Jet Mirror, like Drag Tiger, also got the die-cast conversion by Mego as "Thorium Orbiter", replacing its white body with a metallic gold painted die-cast one, and adding some dark red accents and a pointed tip for the nose cone to replace a kaleidoscope gimmick removed from the original. The twin periscopes that form its namesake jets were, however, retained in the Mego revision
This concludes the monochrome section of Microman Book (aside from the manga portions). I am hoping to do the front, color "99 Secrets of Microman" section later once I have a chance to further edit the compiled page scans. The "secrets," as mentioned before are generally mostly recompiled material covered in other Micromsn paraphernalia, but the accompanying images include some of the best promotional spreads from the early run of Microman Club in TV Magazine and definitely worth seeing for their own merit.
In the meantime, I'm hoping to advance the 2005 manga further, bring some updates on the "Lost Adventures", more interviews and features, with a few surprises perhaps in store. Of course, life is chaotic these days, but hopefully won't get in the way of at least one of these many potential projects coming along further sooner than later.

Führer Acroyear
A321 Devils 1. October, 1976 2. Off the East Coast of America, Bermuda Triangle 3. The "boss" of all Acroyears. Devils is exceptionally clever, but also incredibly selfish. If things don't go exactly as planned, he will start destroying everything around him.
Caption: "A Führer Acroyear riding in the underside of his car.”
A322 Satandar 1. October, 1976 2. The Sunda Trench south of Indonesia. 3. He uses his "Mad Telepathy," a psychic attack, to confuse the minds of Micromen. A terrifying magician, Satandar considers himself the world's greatest villain and immensely proud of it.
A323 Daemon 1. October, 1976 2. The seabed off Nishinoshima Island, Japan. 3. He possesses a heart that is three times more evil than the other two Acroyears. He hates to see well-constructed things such as buildings, and will fire a gas that corrodes objects from his chest.
There's some minor controversy over how to interpret 総統アクロイヤー in English. It sometimes is written on Japanese media as “President Acroyear”, but “Supreme Leader Acroyear” and “Führer Acroyear” are other common interpretations and are just as valid. To add to the confusion, there's only one of each Acroyear type depicted in the manga and even the materials here sometimes seem to forget whether there is a single leader or a triumvirate. Perhaps he's a split personality? Or do they take turns?
This was the third main Acroyear type, introduced in October of 1976 along with his Acroyear Navy retinue of three sea creature cyborg minions. His car shell makes him among the earliest of Takara “Transformer-esque ancestors” and is specifically designed to allow him to also link to his three minions as one rolling monstrosity. A gift playset was sold that packed the four together in one box. Aside from the car shell, he also carries a club with a magnet in it and a tiny ball bearing inside his chest that can be pulled with the magnet into a small “window” as if it were a weapon firing. His body would be reused a couple of years later with a new chromed torso front and large clear head as the Acroyear Amazons, his resurrected, mutated and upgraded form.
Acroyear
A301 Red Star 1. April, 1975 2.The toxic sludge at the bottom of Tokyo Bay, Japan. 3. A nature scientist, Red Star can freely control the natural phenomena he once studied like wind, rain, and tsunamis. On days when the wind is strong or the sea is rough, Red Star may quite likely be on rampage in the vicinity.
A302 Silver Star 1. April, 1975 2. The riverbed of the Thames, London, England. 3. He is a cruel chemist well-versed in deadly poisons and bacteria. He usually stayed cooped up in his laboratory, doing nothing but sinister research.
A303 Blue Star 1. April, 1975 2. The seabed of the Port of Naples, Italy. 3. A heartless, merciless thug, when Blue Star sees beautiful flowers or birds, he crushes them directly by hand.
Kaniroyear (Crabroyear) 1. October, 1976. 2. Kaniroyear is very belligerent. He will face any opponent, no matter how large, with claws that can even cut through steel.
Takoroyear (Octoroyear) 1. October, 1976. 2. Takoroyear is primarily responsible for sea reconnaissance. He blows ink-black gas from his mouth.
The first of the Acroyears (released as the second one in the overseas Micronauts line, confusingly) is meant to have a skeletal appearance with a die-cast skull-like torso and with its distinct polygonal horned helmet-like head perhaps slightly evokes the cursed armor of an undead samurai or an “oni” devil. Its chromed ball-like hands evoke wrecking balls and it also has a simple (and somewhat awkward) vehicle mode it can parts-form into.
In some ways, the design feels a bit rushed out the door, but with its multiple 5mm parts, it does have a lot of good Microman play potential and was an inexpensive antagonist for kids to get early on in the series in 1975. There's some hints that at one point the prototypes of M11x and/or M12x were explored as candidates for this role, and there is in fact an Acroyear mascot logo that looks more like a prototype M12x than an Acroyear.
The 1999 replica series reproduced the figure in high quality and quantity, making it very easy to acquire. Recently, Takara Tomy has shown a prototype for a possible Legacy Soul redesign that might go into production in 2027. The 1999 Magnepowers “Demon Acroyears” are also modeled as an upgrade on the design, and the 200X series introduced a character named AcroVoltech that could change his appearance into a rough approximation of the vintage design.
The character descriptions for them and Acroyear 2 here are a bit confusing as the official materials state that their mutations on the sea floor fused their brains into being “unicellular” (with the exception of Führer), and that they are dumb brutes, yet here most of them are described as mad scientists. A clue to possibly resolving this came in one of the descriptions of Acroyear 2, that suggests that this is actually partly describing their past identities, so while the text itself isn't clear about the tense in the original, I have rendered it in past tense while maintaining some of the ambiguity.
Given that Legacy Soul so far has been using this book as a reference source for the Command profiles, I am curious if it will do the same for the Acroyears or further clarify these profiles…
Also listed are two of the three members of the “Acroyear Navy”. They are cyborg sea creatures befitting the Acroyears’ deep sea toxic sludge origins. If they seem a bit cartoonish, that's just the start… it will be good to keep in mind that the Acroyears are portrayed similarly to villains in children's tokusatsu hero shows and as such would logically have a number of cartoonish, anthropomorphic minions. The Acroyear Navy is also based on the idea of covering land (Kaniroyear), sea (Takoroyear), and air (Eiroyear in the next page). The trio come with die-cast “dash rollers” (also used on the UFO Titan sets) they can glide along on, resembling the “roller skates” on Acroyear.
The Acroyear Navy and Führer Acroyear would much later be resurrected conceptually as the Emperor Acroyear, AcroOptom, AcroGrabs, and AcroStella in the 2005 ExoAcroyear wave of Microman 200X. These included a number of new features along with all their original functions, including a new combined mode as a giant AcroWyvern, which grows to enormous Kaiju size as the "final boss" in the epic climax of the 2005 manga, "Theology" (which hopefully we will get to translating with more time!).
Acroyear 2
A311 Mad “Mud” Pink 1. November, 1975 2. Off the coast of New York City, USA. 3. Usually very quiet, but when he smells exhaust or sludge, Mud Pink suddenly becomes violent and uses telekinesis or "Mad Telepathy" to trample people.
A312 Mad “Mud” Green 1. November, 1975 2. The seabed near an industrial zone in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. 3. A genius for evil deeds, Mud Blue was the boss of the Acroyears until the Führers showed up. Originally a scientist, he is skilled at making weapons.
A313 Mad “Mud” Blue 1. November, 1975 2. Liverpool, England. 3. He possesses incredible physical strength. When he gets angry, even a Führer can't stop him.
Eiroyear (Rayroyear) 1.October, 1976. 2. Eiroyear flies through the sky and can fire intense beams from his eyes.
The second Acroyear delivered a much more robust play experience than its predecessor, with a sizeable pair of rotor wings, die-cast roller wheels, a spy bird drone accessory used for its alternate transformation, and a matching chrome dagger. It's a bit unsurprising the Mego Micronauts led with it instead.
While for decades most fans have assumed they were named “Mad” like the effects of the “Mad Telepathy” attack, the 2026 Legacy Soul upgraded redesign has translated it as “Mud”, which seems a rather odd and possibly mistaken choice, but could make sense if we consider once again their origins in the polluted muck of the ocean floor. I have opted to use both for now in the translation, in any case.
While the vintage figure itself never received a replica in the 1999 reissues, between the Mego Micronauts release back then and the misfortune-beleaguered Palisades retro release (which, while mostly best avoided for the first “Series 1” release, provided a vintage-quality red variant in its limited “Series 1.5” release), samples are not too difficult to find even today.
Interestingly, the roller skate like feet were derived from a Shonen Cyborg accessory and were at first conceived as part of an accessory set for a Microman concept design that was also the predecessor of the Super Steel and Titan figures (before the integration of the Magnemo features).
The third, aerial manta ray-based member of the Acroyear Navy, Eiroyear (which could also be read as “Aeroyear”), is also detailed here. This is a little confusing as the three were more clearly attached to the Fuhrer Acroyear, whilst the original two Acroyears had simultaneously assembled their own gaggle of minions, the bizarre Uniquer Corps…:
Uniquer Corps
U601 Akubē Tarō 1. October, 1976 2. Among the scrap in a precision machinery factory in Tokyo. 3. Smartest of the Uniquer Corps, Tarō is very compassionate, but his head sometimes has a screw loose.
U602 Akubē Jirō 1. October, 1976 2. Among the scrap in an automobile factory in Kawasaki. 3. Jirō is strong and indulges in road repairs, but he is impatient and often gives up halfway through.
U603 Akubē Saburō 1. October, 1976 2. Among the industrial waste in Chiba. 3. Saburō loves playing with broken toys. If things don't go well, he immediately joins in with the Acroyears.
Lighton 1. June, 1977 2. Born from an electric lamp stand. 3. Lighton may have a goofy face, but he's remarkably facile with mechanical things like bicycles or cars.
Camelar 1. June, 1977 2. Born from a camera. 3. "Say cheese!" Is the catchphrase of this camera-robot, but Camelar’s l "Camera Flash" is his ultimate weapon.
Tokeidar 1. June, 1977 2. Born from a high-end Swiss clock, Tokeidar puts on upper-class airs, but he is actually very lazy about keeping to schedule. A veteran at being late for meetings.
Ah yes…the Uniquer Corps. While probably all but entirely dismissable by most Western collectors (not at all unlike the Micronaut clown robots, the “Trons”), there’s quite a bit more to these “comic relief” clowns of the Acroyear line-up than meets the eye that merits further explanation.
First let's note that the order of presentation here is slightly reversed, story-wise. The three junkyard scrap robots were built by Acroyears 1 & 2 to augment their forces (Führer was not at all impressed), and despite their comical appearance, were somewhat effective weapons of destruction. Akubē is where things take a very strange turn, however.
You see, nobody actually knows where he comes from. No, really! When the Acroyears built the Uniquers, a mysterious “egg” appeared in the scrapyard, calling out for “Mommy”. This “egg” magnetically self-assembled into Akubē and imprinted on the Acroyears, and continued to call them “Mommy”. Somehow, they took charge of the Uniquer Corps. I'm not really clear on just how or why that happened, but perhaps more will come to light as I hope to do a deeper dive into them in a future post.
There is a fun piece of fan lore, which unfortunately I don't have an attribution for currently, that Akube’s core is actually a Microman Titan body. This makes a lot of sense because they share the same Magnemo 8 system and their “BunBun Heli” backpack is clearly modeled upon the Titan Atom Cannon. This would also explain their behavior because unlike the trio of scrap robots, they always get things backwards and wind up repairing damage left by the Acroyears and helping people. Is this incompetence, or could it be deliberate (conscious or unconscious, if the Titan has had memory loss) sabotage? In any case, it's played for laughs on their packaging and catalogs.
Speaking of fan speculation, my own pet theory about the three scrap robots is they are inspired by the Japanese Tsukumogami yōkai, supernaturally animated discarded objects that drew spiritual consciousness over their prolonged period of use and sudden abandonment. This would thematically tie them better with their masters, and even give another possible explanation for Akubē as a kind of mechanical yōkai.
In any case the Uniquer Corps, after a brief role in the main manga series, would continue to appear as characters in a side series of Microman educational manga on subjects ranging from insects and dinosaurs to guns and whaling (oh dear).
While these toys seem silly and perhaps even arbitrary, there's a few more things to keep in mind. When they debuted in 1976, comical robot characters were extremely popular between tokusatsu children’s shows such as Robocon and the highly popular and successful Robodatchi manga with its own kits and toys, some licensed by Takara. It's hardly surprising Takara would crossover this trend into Microman as well, especially given that their target demographic was from kindergarten through third grade at this time (they would attempt to appeal some to older kids and tweens by the 1980s, but not quickly enough to retain many of the first generation of fans). The goofy Uniquers might have helped take the edge off the more menacing Acroyears (especially in the manga) for their youngest potential fans.
I do believe that Star Wars and the American comics may have skewed Western perspective on this series towards a more mature interpretation, but ultimately Takara originally wanted bright, colorful, and fun to play with toys that have more in common with Playmobil than Star Wars or GI Joe. And with that in mind, these figures are actually very fun to handle and have plenty of interesting 5mm and Magnemo parts of potential use for more “serious” toy combinations.
“Unique,” indeed!
Edit: it's also worth noting that the scrap robots and Navy members had the lowest price of any Microman figure, making them particularly accessible for young kids with pocket money.
Study Uniquer Corps
U611 Warubē Bunta 1. June, 1977 2. Among the trash at an Acroyear base. 3. Bunta believes he is the smartest, but his subordinates whisper otherwise.
U612 Warubē Kanta 1. June, 1977 2. Among the trash at an Acroyear base. 3. He is kind enough to share his own parts to fix a comrade, but Kanta’s weakness is being a bit of a coward.
U613 Warubē Kenta 1. June, 1977 2. Among the trash at an Acroyear base. 3. He’s a bit clumsy: Kenta once accidentally sharpened Bunta's arm with his pencil sharpener.
Gosenchi 1. June, 1977 2. Born from a triangular ruler, Gosenchi is skilled at using triangles to build toys.
Dokojar 1. June, 1977 2. Born from a pachinko game machine, Dokojar just wants to play with you!
Akubē B 1. June, 1977 2. He fancies himself a genius designer, but in reality, Akubē B is just a genius at doodling.
Tapeun 1. June, 1977 2. Born from a tape dispenser. Armed with a screwdriver and hammer, Tapeun is a repair expert.
After that lengthy dissertation about the original Uniquer Corps (thanks for attending my ACROTED Talk), there's a bit less to be said here. The Study Uniquer Corps were canonically built by Akubē to…help kids with school? This was also an emerging trend, of toy companies making essentially gimmick stationary products as another marketing tactic, which would really take off over the following years. The Study Uniquers played into that and worked well enough with the Uniquer aesthetic (and even included two female versions to appeal to girls, the only other vintage female figures besides Lady Command). Their Magnemo 8 and 5mm parts do also give some added play possibilities. The style and approach differed enough from Microman that they did receive a further release spun off as a completely separate product line of “Mecha Kits” that continued a bit longer on its own.
The Study Uniquers would actually secretly return in 1999-2000 as the Microman U-Borg line licensed to Media Factory.
This is part 2 of 4 translating the Microman Directory from 1977's Microman Book Kodansha TV Magazine special edition.
Part One is here.
Super Microman
M211 Ken 1. July 1975 2. Caracas coast, Venezuela. 3. Having participated in countless battles, Ken is truly adept at exploiting his enemies' weaknesses. He cherishes the lives of his comrades; no matter how perilous the situation becomes, he remains calm, acts decisively, and invariably turns the tide of battle in their favor.
M212 Cary 1. July 1975 2. Cologne industrial zone, West Germany 3. As the leader of the Super Micromen, Cary possesses exceptional athletic prowess. Furthermore, by unfurling the "Dash Wings" (normally kept folded against his back) he can fly completely silently. This ability makes him an invaluable asset during combat operations.
M213 Kim 1. July 1975 2.Science Research Laboratory in Beijing, China 3. A space scientist with an encyclopedic knowledge of every celestial body in the solar system. For whenever he has a spare moment, Kim blasts off from Earth, visiting Mars today and Jupiter tomorrow, to explore and frolic amongst the stars. However, despite his playful nature, he is indispensable for his guidance during times of battle.
Caption: Ken firing his Micro-Breastplate
The M21X is actually the second "Super Steel" all-die-cast Microman release, but M20X was somewhat confusingly rereleased next with upgrades as M22X, which is covered next.
The original Super Microman release of M20X was accompanied with the first big TV commercial for Microman, which directly parodied the classic Fleischer Brothers Superman cartoon introduction ("Faster than a speeding bullet," etc.).
The "K" names are perhaps a reference to the alliteratively named Clark Kent or perhaps his planet Krypton. Microman's own origin story is clearly inspired by the same. "K" also could be meant to evoke "koutetsu" (steel), as being die-cast, they are almost literally (Micro) Men of Steel.
Ken is a common heroic name and in fact probably references Henshin Cyborg's alter ego as Professor Kenichi "Ken" Katagai, another alliterative "K" name (and relative of Microman manga protagonist Akira Katagai, probably his paternal uncle).
Cary probably gets his name from the suave popular actor Cary Grant, spelled the same way in Japanese katakana. His name is often interpreted as "Kelly", but this is not commonly rendered the same way in katakana ("カリー" vs. "ケリー"). It is a funny coincidence though that the first two names read that way match the full name of a famous fantasy/SF artist who became known for his work on KISS album covers a year after the toys were released, and would a bit later still paint the packaging art for Mego's Micronauts-original aliens (never a part of the Microman line, developed by California R&D instead).
It's also worth noting that in the Kodansha Microman manga by Yoshihiro Moritou, M102 Jack was killed in combat but resurrected in the same body used in the toyline as Cary's, and is the only Super Microman to appear therein. The manga doesn't use the numbering at all and doesn't always match the toyline canon, even though at various points the toylines have integrated some of Moritou's ideas and characters.
Kim is not an uncommon name in China, where he was resurrected, but it's also the name of the main protagonist Kimball "Kim" Kinnison of the classic Lensman space opera stories, another cosmic influence on the Microman saga.
Super Microman
M221 Robin 1. September 1975 2. outskirts of Bangui, Central Africa 3. Robin possesses clairvoyance among other psychic abilities, allowing him to perceive things clearly up to 10 kilometers away. On Earth, he is considered even more useful than radar.
M222 Robert 1. September 1975 2. a cavern near Santiago, Chile 3. Robert possesses extraordinary athletic reflexes. He can dodge bullets fired from as close as five meters. His body is sensitive to his surroundings like a radar, and he has never been injured in battle.
M223 Rocky 1. September 1975 2. seabed off Cape Lewin, Australia 3. A scientist specializing in resource investigation and development, Rocky is hot-tempered and when encountering an Acroyear attack, he gets immediately fired up. He removes the rocket from his back, braces it against his chest, and relentlessly fires his Energy Cannon.
Caption: Rocky unleashing a barrage of energy attacks
The M22X trio are actually an upgraded rerelease of the original M20X Super Microman team. The original was made based on the original Microman Zone figure design, and as such lacked the 5mm socket in his back and had the shorter wrist cuffs and no special accessories. The M22X brought them up to the new standard format and added a spring loaded "Hand Bazooka" that doubles as a rocket pack.
Sharing the same head as the original Microman Zone figures and M10X, the initial M20X release seemed to imply they were the same Micromen resurrected in "Super Steel" bodies, but M22X gives them unique identities. This is probably the inspiration though for Jack's resurrection in the manga, though he wound up with the M212 body instead, differentiating him more that way.
There aren't as many strong leads on the name choices that I have found so far, though the "R" and "Ro-" naming seems possibly evocative of "rockets". The movie Rocky wasn't out when these figures released. Robin certainly has a bit of a Robin Hood (or Batman's sidekick) feel. And Robert is such a common name it could reference any number of heroic influences.
That said, and I do admit this is a bit of a stretch again, but if we consider when the Super Micromen came out in relation to M12X, we go from "Mi" to "K/C" to "Ro" : MI-C-RO. Hey, it may be grasping at straws, but it's plausible...
Titan
T401 Sirius (シリウス) 1. January 1976 2. 2. Outer Solar System, within the rings of Saturn. 3. A genius in biology and robot engineering, Sirius remodeled his comrades into cyborg bodies while within the rings of Saturn.
T402 Pegasus (ペガサス) 1. January 1976 2. Outer Solar System, within the rings of Saturn. 3: The magnetic joints connecting Pegasus's limbs, head, and torso allow for completely free disassembly and reassembly, so even an Acroyear's punch is powerless against him. Even more impressive are the magnetic beams Pegasus can fire from every part of his body. When enveloped by these beams, even a Giant Acroyear becomes paralyzed. Pegasus serves as the leader of the magnificent Titans.
T403 Heracles (ヘラクレス) 1. January 1976 2. Outer Solar System, within the rings of Saturn. 3. A geologist who spent his time climbing the mountains of Titan (a moon of Saturn) to conduct surveys. Since arriving on Earth, Heracles has put that knowledge to excellent use, playing a vital role in battles fought in mountainous terrain.
Magne-Condor & DoberMachine 1. January 1976 2. Both were remodeled within the rings of Saturn by the hands of Sirius and Hercules. 3. Both are cyborgs capable of surviving in any environment. Thanks to their magnetic joints, they can disassemble their bodies at will, allowing them to fly and run with the speed of an arrow.
The Titan series marks the start of the integration of the "Magnemo" system into Microman, following up on the success of the Steel Jeeg toys the prior year. The concept was originally developed with the cooperation of Studio Nue and recently early prototype sculpts of the "Magne Robo" were found in the possession of Studio Nue author Haruka Takachiho that had been designed and sculpted by Naoyuki Kato, including the head that would get used by the first Titan figures, which indicates their design actually predates the Jeeg character design by Ken Ishikawa and Go Nagai.
The naming and setting of the Titan line was particularly inspired. The Pioneer mission had just made its flyby of Saturn giving us our first close look at the ringed gas giant and its retinue of moons, especially the aptly named gargatuan moon Titan with its mysterious thick atmosphere. Add to this the renewed interest in Greco-Roman mythology in popular culture and that the Microman series launched with the "tiny titan" byline (originally "chisana kyojin", alternatively translatable as "small giant") it was a bit of timely serendipity that Takara wasted no time getting on board with. Of course Microman would have a presence in Saturn's rings and its moons, especially Titan.
(They also do have a slightly taller stature than the prior Micromen, for what it is worth.)
With this action figure format change, the Titans thus moved on from alliterative names to more random Greco-Roman ones, often also associated with astronomical names as well.
While there are two color variations of Magne-Condor and DoberMachine, and have their individual number designations, they don't seem to have individual names, and their numbers T411, T412, T421, and T422 were not listed in the book. They are among the first animals to manifest in the line (along with the Acroyear Naval Corps), probably inspired by both the Henshin Cyborg Jaguar (and unproduced Condor) as well as the popular transforming cyborg doberman Friender from the Tatsunoko anime Casshern. They also would likely later serve as the inspiration for the 1983 MicroChange Cassette Machines Condor and Jaguar, which went on to become far more famous as rebranded as the Transformers Laserbeak and Ravage.
Titan 2
T431 Deimos (ダイモス) 1. September* 1976 2. On the "Hills of Mars" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. Whenever it is time for battle, Daimos combines with his Racing Car and flies off.
T432 Regulus (レグルス) 1. September* 1976 2. Underground below the Titan Base on Saturn's moon Titan. 3. Known as the "lonely wolf" among the Titans, Regulus is currently researching potential new spaceflight technologies.
T441 Icarus (イカルス) 1. April 1976 2. The "Sea of Silence" on Saturn's moon Titan. 3. Skilled at searching for rare stones and lifeforms, Icarus revived the Titan Commands in the "Valley of Glass."
T442 Achilles (アキレス) 1. April 1976 2.The "Zardos Plain" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. An expert at developing and remodeling machines, Achilles built a UFO that he can combine with himself. He and Icarus are always competing to see whose UFO is faster.
With the second wave of Titans, we move to the moon Titan going forward, with some colorfully themed, dreamed up locations that feel right at home in a space opera. Plus a pop culture reference, no less.
These Titans parts-forming into vehicles are among the earliest expressions of the concepts that would eventually lead to the Diaclone Car Robots that would become the basis for Transformers. The desire to make figures that could take on vehicular forms runs strong throughout the series and stems of course from Henshin Cyborg. In addition, the UFO Titans are clearly a riff/cash-in on UFO Grendizer. Although it still kind of annoys me personally that they frequently use the term for flying objects that are clearly identified! But yes, the UFO craze popularized the term to refer to any saucer-esque spacecraft in the pop culture of the 1970s and beyond.
*Note that the dates don't seem to align between this and the following Titan Commands. This is probably a typographical error or editorial miss. For the most parts these dates correlate directly to the actual retail release dates. Those dates would correctly align things with the discoveries and revivals, and the September date makes no sense. I am preserving these errors though for the sake of accurate provenance.
Titan Command
T451 Jupiter (ジュピター) 1. February 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan. 3: Outside of combat, his primary role is information gathering. When combined with the 2,000-horsepower Gimca, Jupiter can travel at the speed of light!
T452 Poseidon (ポセイドン) 1. February 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. Poseidon is a combat medic. For Command members who have often faced intense battles, Poseidon, who treats injuries, is a true godsend.
T461 Tyros (タイロス) 1. February 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. Tyros protects the base from the Acroyear army by analyzing the information gathered by his comrades.
T462 Hercules (ハーキュリー)
Note: This is rendered as Hākyurī (ハーキュリー) to distinguish it from the earlier Herakuresu (ヘラクレス). 1. February 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. A biologist. In his laboratory, Hercules keeps strange creatures from all over the universe, such as snakes and lizards that eat from their tails and excrete from their mouths.
So as you can see, the February revival of the first Titan Commands makes sense in the overall timeline, but the September revival of their discoverer makes zero sense.
The Titan Command series integrated the first Gimca modular diecast toy cars, a clever cross-over soft launch of a new toyline that would continue on its own to integrate battery motors add-ons and more under that label, even remote control versions. The Titan Magnemo-8 interchangeability with the cars was a logical extension of the Titan 2 race car parts-forming pseudo transformation, but in this case used to help invest kids in a different product line.
The setting for all of the many Titan Command revivals this year were all in crystalline-themed locations on Titan's cloud-covered surface, probably an extension of the "revived from crystals" concept of their predecessors. The Greco-Roman inspired names continue throughout the lineup, with a surprising use of the Roman Hercules, differentiated in spelling and pronunciation from the original Greek-named Heracles in the first trio.
Titan Command
T471 Phaias (ファイアス) 1. March 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. Phaias pssesses an A-class license for piloting. He is always flying around combined with his Gimca. Even the combined Acroyear forces have yet to catch this particular Titan.
T472 Apollos (アポロス) 1. March 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. A scholar of architectural engineering who built the Titan Base. Currently, he is working with John on toward the design of a "Utopia."
T481 Nephthes (ネフテス) 1. March 1977 2. The "Crystal Mountains" on Saturn's moon Titan. 3. Although his physical form resembles that of an aircraft, his intellect remains distinctly Titanian. He voluntarily modified his own body to ensure he could gather information with maximum speed and efficiency.
T482 Alphas (アルファス) 1. March 1977 2. The "Crystal Mountains" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. Like his comrade, Alpha's brain is undeniably Titanian. He is capable of more than just flight; by combining with his partnered Gimca, he can unleash superhuman powers and change into a combat-ready configuration.
The variations continue, including introducing the only non-humanoid Titan Commands, let alone the only Microman characters in the original series to transcend humanoid bodies and become sentient space ships. In some ways this also feels a bit of a presentiment towards the sentient vehicles of the Transformers universe. I personally get a bit of a feeling of Osamu Tezuka's Ambassador Magma (another transforming robot/spaceship precursor), or perhaps even Anne McCaffrey's novel, The Ship Who Sang.
Titan Command
★ The fifth Titan Command unit represents the culmination of Microman science—a Titan fully infused with every ounce of that knowledge to achieve a massive power-up. The Command Squad itself has become incredibly formidable!
T491 Mirax (ミラクス)
Date/Location: 1. September 1977 2. Underground at the "Diamond Hills" on Saturn's moon Titan. 3. Among the Titan Command units, Mirax harbors the most destructive energy of all. Perhaps due to this, he possesses a somewhat reckless streak; he is constantly itching for action, restlessly awaiting the moment for the Acroyers to make their appearance.
T492 Cassius (カシアス)
Date/Location: 1. September 1977 2. Underground at the "Diamond Hills" on Saturn's moon Titan 3. The vanguard captain of the Command unit. His brain is loaded with data on every conceivable form of warfare, and he is particularly adept at coordinating group attacks. He invariably places himself at the very front of the charge, never allowing a single comrade to venture alone into enemy territory. Consequently, the Acroyer forces have made it their primary objective to take down Cassius first.
T493 Eimis (エイミス) 1. September 1977 2. The "Valley of Glass" on Saturn's moon Titan. 3.
Highly proficient in weapon mechanics, Amis is dedicated to the modification and power-up of the various armaments utilized by the Command Squad. Due to the fierce battles waged against the Acroyer Navy, many weapons are frequently destroyed and the constant need for repairs and maintenance leaves Eimis with absolutely no time to rest; so little time, in fact, that he often is grumbling that he can't even spare a moment to maintain his own body!
Caption: Focusing their full body's power into firing the ray cannon!
The final set of Titan Commands are the most impressive of their sub-line, featuring 5mm hand sockets (a feature that would have been welcome on the the more abstract arms of the prior ones), along with an impressive accessory that works as a two handed cannon, a flight pack, or an engine for their Gimca combination modes. While these were the last Titans at the time of the book's publication, they would be followed in 1978 by the final Titan release, the Spaceknight Titan (and accompanying gold and black Space Dober and Condor). While the Titan line was then retired, in the next couple of years the void would be filled by the similarly statured Microman Punch, and MicroBorg in New Microman.
Update June 20, 2026: finishing up the remaining two parts soon now, and I realized I was a bit remiss on not mentioning the more modern MagneTitans and MagneAnimals from the excellent 1999 MagnePowers series, though they use the larger Magnemo 11 system rather than Magnemo 8, and the Titans in that series are more in the style of 1999 Transformers and are a trio of space pirates. The MagneAnimals on the other hand are very much in keeping with expanding upon the original Titan animal/vehicles in style, if in the larger Magnemo 11. Six years later still, the 200X Microman line introduced MagneForce, which were a blending of the original magnemo 8 shoulders and hips with a magnemo 11 ball as the midsection, a clever hybrid approach, while the bodies and heads were styled after the 1978 Timanic series.

While previously the Acroyear 2 were previously usually romanized as MAD Pink, Green, and Blue, and one of their attacks induced madness, their origin of being Micromen who were mutated by toxic sludge at the bottom of the ocean... literally meant they came from the"mud". So while this could be a typo, it seems that from now on, "the Acroyear 2 trio's name is Mud".
With this, we are halfway through the story, and at the end of the batch of translations I had collaborated with Yukiko on.
Going forward, in order to keep things rolling and to deal with Tumblr image count limits that will be hit by a couple of longer chapters later, I will be posting future chapters in two installments each.
There may be a bit of a wait as the next Microman Book installment is getting close to ready and there's a couple of other surprises in the wings that could pop up. However, I do have a good chunk done of chapter 7 part one, so we'll see how it goes...

Now that the official setting has been released, it has become clear that Altered Nano, formerly Project M, is firmly rooted in Takara SF Land concepts after all, largely borrowing concepts from the old Timanic series (space and time travel using teleoperation and telepresence through remote android proxies, or what Masamune Shirow once called "decots") and Microman (especially Hoodman) for use of miniaturization technologies. It's Microman adjacent, much like Timanic and other splinter Takara SF Land lines have been in the past, clearly an offshoot, yet deliberately more open to interpretation (not to mention copying many presentation style elements of Kotobukiya's long successful, Microman and Zoids-like Hexa Gear series).
Translation below captured by Google Web Translate from the official Altered Nano page.

One last observation spotted on (twitter)... comparison with a vintage Microman "M" badge:
I have also previously commented on there and Facebook that the main, green Altered Nano logo itself also is based on the starburst inside the "ro" kana of the original Microman logo...
Source: Microman Book, Kodansha TV Magazine special edition release 1977
Preceding Takara's own self-published Zero Zero Magazine, Kodansha published the rather remarkable Microman Book as a cheap supplemental newsprint magazine format companion piece to their publication of Moritou's popular manga series and accompanying promo spreads. An intro to the book, particularly the big pin-up poster/board game and calendar bonus extras included have been covered here briefly previously (though the boardgame hasn't been posted here just yet).
The book is divided into a few sections. The first, full color section, The 99 Secrets of Microman, compiles some wonderful prior magazine promo spreads with accompanying 99 "secrets" of Microman lore (largely taken from the catalogs and other materials). I have these scanned, but they need some further cropping/pairing before I can get to putting them up just yet.
The remaining sections are mostly in monochrome (except some of the manga), usually purple ink on newsprint. This includes a lengthy chapter of the Microman manga, an "educational" manga (together, these make up more than half the page count) and the contents listed below:

---The monochrome portion of the book is in the cheapest manga magazine newsprint, which even on perfect specimens, did not weather the test of age well, the purple ink saturating the thin paper, bleeding through over time to make many of the pages effectively transparent, showing the print through each side. This is the same problem faced by much of the other non-reprinted manga, and a challenge to restore and reproduce. I have used photoshop to filter and reduce the bleeding.
I had some promising results using Google Gemini to further restore the pages (as with the title page shown), but after uploading them, I found too many errors slipped through so I am replacing that with my original processed scans. I believe I can still do better restoration later, but it will take a lot more time so this will have to suffice for now. But this may get updated further later. I haven't had a chance to properly crop a couple of images, so they will get fixed at least.
Speaking of errors, it should be noted that the publication itself was compiled by magazine editorial staff and may at times be apocryphal, sometimes mixing bios or names up or even possibly contradicting material published elsewhere. Japanese toy historians I have spoken about this with have recommended considering Microman Book and other contemporaneous guides published by Kodansha as a secondary source when compared with the materials published directly by Takara (though Microman Book appears to have been in turn used as the basis for the character bios in the new Legacy Soul Microman reboot materials), and to give precedence to the original Takara materials when there are said contradictions.
I will try to note such discrepancies as I catch them, though these may come as later edits or updates. It's likely I may miss some of them at first, so again, please feel free to submit any corrections or questions.
For this blog entry I will be covering up through Command 3. Future entries will cover the rest, but may be interspersed between other blog updates such as the next 2005 manga chapter. Translation is aggregated from Google Translate, Gemini, and my own personal translating, reinterpreting, and editing.

Profile Key:
1) Year of Appearance on Earth
2) Place of Revival
3) Unique Characteristics
Microman
M101 George
1. October 1974 2. Near Neptune in the outer Solar System. 3. The mind of George embodies the full range of Microman science, encompassing all cosmology. He can freely control molecular fusion and create various things. As just one example, he can create diamonds with the greatest of ease.
M102 Jack
1. October 1974 2. Near Neptune in the outer Solar System. 3. Revived alongside George, Jesse and John, he is the strongest among the four. Even when pulverized by the Acroyear, his love for peace manifests in his Microman pride and courage, giving him the strength to fight back.
M103 Jesse
1. October 1974 2. Near Neptune in the outer Solar System. 3. Jesse has particularly strong psychic abilities, possessing a repertoire of twenty-five different special moves. Among them is psychokinesis (the ability to instantly levitate and hurl objects with the power of thought).
M104 John
1. October 1974 2. Near Neptune in the outer Solar System. 3. He excels in technology, especially in the art of assembling electronic circuitry. He plays an active role in the construction of bases.
★ Microman encased in crystal, wandering through the Cosmos
Translation commentary: For much of the original Microman run, teams of Micromen would have names that are alliterative. The M10X, originally just named by color in the Microman Zone prelude year of 1974, were given "J" names as a nod to their origins in GI Joe--in fact, M101 George (Jorge?) is spelled in katakana ジョージ with the same spelling as Joe (ジョー). It's also highly likely the names George and John were inspired by the recent popularity of the Beatles. Jesse is perhaps a reference to Jesse James, while Jack is the remaining most common English "J" name, making it harder to guess any specific reference (though John and Jack together might possibly evoke the Kennedys? Or perhaps Jack London?).
The new 2026 Legacy Soul lore is now giving each group announced thus far a shared surname that has the same alliteration. It seems to suggest that each group are brothers, or at least very closely related, which may help explain why the actual figures share matching heads in each team.
M111 Bobson
1. March 1975 2. At a scientific research institute in Seattle, United States. 3. With an exceptionally high I.Q., Bobson is the indispensable architect of bases and weaponry. He is intelligent and overly cautious at times, but he acts with calm reason, making him the leader among Burns, Bobby, and Blacky.
M112 Barnes
1. March 1975 2. In the basement of a large hospital in Montreal, Canada. 3. He holds a doctorate in medicine and knows all there is about the Microman body. He is an indispensable leader in Microman rescue operations, especially in battles against the Acroyear.
M113 Bobby
1. March 1975 2. At the Cape Canaveral Rocket Launch Center, United States. 3. He is skilled in mechanics. A true professional, particularly in weapon operation and modification. Weapons with reduced performance are instantly upgraded by his hand to become new equipment to combat the Acroyear.
M114 Blacky
1. March 1975 2. Inside a coal mine in São Paulo, Brazil. 3. He is knowledgeable in astrophysics within Microman science. He enjoys solving mysteries and has tackled and answered many enigmas of the vast universe. Currently, he is working on understanding the secrets held by black holes and white holes.
Translation commentary: Perhaps the M11X team were given "B" names to signify being the second group. "Bobson" was notably the name of a popular slim jeans brand in Japan around 1975, so it's a very likely source of inspiration fitting the slender-legged, cool image.
M121 Mason
1. March 1975 2. Buried in the Ural Mountains, Soviet Union. 3. He possesses exceptional talent in atmospheric science, spending each year confined to his laboratory, studying Earth's meteorology, such as typhoons, as well as the celestial bodies. It's certain that Mason will be able to handle anything related to sudden climate change.
M122 Michael
1. March 1975 2. Mount Parnassus, Greece. 3. His machine handling skills are second to none amongst the Micromen. Testing new Machine Cars and other vehicles is Michael's job. Recently, he was given the nickname "Supercar Freak" and is even more enthusiastic than ever.
M123 Miller
1. March 1975 2. Near the crater of Mount Vesuvius, Italy. 3. Miller has an exceptionally good memory and is deeply knowledgeable about the history of MicroEarth. He also remembers each of his comrades' shortcomings and failures, so everyone is always smiling, careful not to set off his short temper.
M124 Max
1. March 1975 2. Inside a rock in the suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. 3. Max is an astronomer, and especially knowledgeable about galaxies among his comrades. He knows everything, even what kind of star is located several light-years directly beyond Pluto, and what you'll find if you hang a right turn there...
★ "Michael diligently testing machine cars"
Translation commentary: following further on my numbering speculation, "M" is an obvious choice as the katakana ミ ("mi"), aside from being the first phoneme in "Microman," literally means "three" and clearly evokes it. The selected M names were common enough in popular culture at the time such as James Mason, Michael Caine, Glenn Miller, and Peter Max, but as with most of the "B" team, it's unclear if there's any specific sources of inspiration.
Spy Magicians
M131 Dick
1. June 1976 2. The seabed of the Dover Strait, between England and France. 3. An authority on espionage, and key strategist for the Spy Magicians. The meticulous plans he devises through his dangerous investigations to defeat the Acroyears consistently leads the Command unit to certain victory.
M132 Dan
1. June 1976 2. A rocky mountain in the suburbs of Paris, France. 3. Dan is incredibly fast-thinking, unparalleled at creating and deciphering codes. As the leader of the Spy Magicians, he infiltrates even the most dangerous places, always at the forefront.
M133 Danny
1. June 1976 2. Deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Spain. 3. Danny is quite the dandy, always concerned about his looks. He's the type who gets upset even if a little dust gets on him. However, his skill in marksmanship and explosives is unmatched, and he serves as the training instructor for other Spy Magicians.
M134 David
1. June 1976 2. The seabed of the Frisian Islands, North Sea. 3. Except when on mission, David is a laid-back type who spends most of his time napping. However, he has exceptional hearing abilities, and often unexpectedly will return from out of nowhere to reveal incredible intel, such as the Acroyears' specific attack plans.
Translation commentary: The "D" names are the last obvious numerical connection, for this fourth team of four. These names seem to fit the spy theme, perhaps influenced by names from the genre such as Dick Barton, Dan Dare, Danny Wilde, and David Callan.
Spy Magicians
M141 Henry
1. June 1976 2. The coast of a cape in San Lucas, Mexico. 3. Henry is the ever-reliable intel gatherer amongst the Spy Magicians. To further this, he became an expert in military science and developed various mechanisms. He is responsible for most of the designs for the Spy Cars.
M142 Hudson
1. June 1976 2. Underground waterways in Wellington, New Zealand. 3. Among the Micromen, he is the only one with a deep understanding of the Acroyear. His diligent and dedicated research makes him a critical asset for the battles to come. He mentors young Spy Magicians at the Microman Central Intelligence Agency.
M143 Holmes
1. June 1976 2. On the mountainous border between India and Nepal. 3. Holmes is knowledgeable in medicine, particularly specializing in toxins. He is a bit of a prankster and once, right in the middle of a meal, Jack broke down in a fit of laughter; it came out later that Holmes had slipped some "happy pills" into the soup...
M144 Howard
1. June 1976 2. A small village on the island of Bali, Indonesia. 3. He was a champion who dominated the Ranger Tournament in his past history in the Micro sphere. He uses his ranger training to teach everyone how to effectively infiltrate enemy territory.
★ Henry riding in one of his own custom-built Spy Cars.
Translation commentary: while the number correlation, if truly intentional, seems to fizzle out here, there is nonetheless a correlation between the number 5 and the letter "H" in Chaldean numerology, as well as the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet being equivalent to it.
After this, the trail stops cold. But it's interesting to see a possible intent behind the naming groups from 1975-1976. More significantly, it's clear that detective fiction and magic was part of the inspiration here with obvious allusions to Sherlock Holmes and Miss Hudson, and possibly magicians Henry Slade and Howard Thurston.
Microman Command
M-151 East
1. April 1977 2. Near Rano Raraku, Easter Island. 3. East's role is to read ancient texts that humans cannot decipher during archeological expeditions. He, like all Microman Command members, has four special moves: Jump Cutters, Great Guard Shock, Anti-Gravity Shot, and the Micro Kick.
M-152 Erich
1. April 1977 2. Near Anakena, Easter Island. 3. He is an archaeologist knowledgeable about the lives and populations of ancient peoples. While he is not particularly fond of fighting, he once became enraged when an Acroyear damaged an archeological site and defeated them using his four special moves.
M-153 Elder
1. April 1977 2. Near Ahu Akivi, Easter Island. 3. His job is to search for resources located underground; there, he uses his skills to terraform the terrain as needed through manipulation of chemical compounds. He is also advancing research on using this power to purify sediment from toxic sludge.*
M-154 Evans
1. April 1977 2. Near Rano Kau, Easter Island. 3. Using his psychokinetic abilities, he can instantly lift rocks weighing many tons into the air and crush them. He is a stalwart ally who doesn't simply levitate things, but also targets Acroyears with this supernatural power.*
Translation commentary: it's pretty obvious in this case what the inspiration for the "E" choice here was as well as M151 East. Similarly, "Elder" is a direct reference to Thor Heyerdahl's "Elder Moai" of Easter Island (Rano Kau). Erich is clearly a nod to Erich Van Däniken's "ancient alien" UFOlogy very popular at the time, basis for the Command backstory. Evans likely references the archeologist colleague of Heyerdahl, Clifford Evans.
In late 2025's Legacy Soul Microman reboot, each number has been amended with an "L" suffix, and the team was given the phonetically alliterative surname Hernandez (with a silent "h"), probably chosen by being common name in this region that is now modern Chile, though obviously not the case when they would have first landed in ancient times. So for example, M151L East Hernandez.
*Elder and Evans' bios are swapped in this book from their correct official catalog assignments, which I became aware of due to Legacy Soul's profiles being built upon these, but had fixed the assigned profiles to match the original official catalogs.
Microman Command
M-161 Sharif
1. April 1977 2. Egypt, Valley of the Kings, at the base of Tutankhamun's tomb. 3. Sharif is the leader of Microman Command 2. While he can seem a bit cold and distant, he is actually very kind-hearted. He excels in geography and is familiar with all the Earth's terrain. He most certainly even knows your hometown!
M-162 Sander
1. April 1977 2. Egypt, inside the Great Pyramid of Giza (Khufu), in a room with a secret passage. 3. Sander is an expert in geophysics and is highly knowledgeable about Earth's ancient history and ruins. He also excels at special moves. His "Jump Cutter" attack involves jumping high and then slicing through enemies with gravitational counter-force.
M-163 Smith
1. April 1977 2. Egypt, inside the right eye of the Sphinx. 3. Smith is the biggest klutz in the Microman Command 2 team. However, when it comes to natural sciences, he is second to none. He can invoke various natural phenomena at will using his own psychic abilities.
M-164 Sami
1. April 1977 2. Egypt, a stone from the Pyramid of Khafre. 3. Sami's memory is outstanding, and his high IQ makes him the smartest among the Microman. Is there anyone who envies him? His powerful "Great Guard Shock" technique is abhorred by the Acroyear Navy particularly the most.
Translation commentary: it's not as clear why "S" was assigned to this team's alliteration, but the names themselves that actually sparked my examination of their possible origins and inspiration.
While the leader's name is usually romanized as "Sheriff" (not unfitting the leader role and colors, but odd as an actual name) it became clear to me in the past that it's more likely the Arabic name "Sharif". This also aligns with the new 2026 Arabic surname for the group, Sayid. Sander, sometimes previously romanized as "Thunder", is a classic shortening of "Alexander" in some languages, and also etymologically alludes to a person "of the sand". Sir Grafton Elliot Smith was a notable Egyptologist that might have been picked up during the naming process. Sami, often previously interpreted as "Sammy", is notable as another Arabic name that fits the theme.
Microman Command
M-171 Takuma
1. October 1977 2. Location: Kamegaoka Ruins, Aomori Prefecture. 3. As the Great Explosion occurred on Micro Earth, an archive of Micro Earth's space science data was embedded as a shard within Takuma; making him a scientist with supernatural abilities. He is the leader of Microman Command 3.
M-172 Tetsuya
1. October 1977 2. Near Mount Osore, Aomori Prefecture, at the latest ruins. 3. Tatsuya is highly knowledgeable about Japan’s ancient ruins and of the Micromen of ancient times. As an archival record of Micro Earth's history is directly embedded within him as a shard, he is the only person who knows the full history of Microman itself.
M-173 Tatsuya
1. October 1977 2. Inside a stone in the underground of the Oyu Stone Circles, Akita Prefecture. 3. Archival data regarding thermodynamics was embedded within Tatsuya as a shard as well. To defeat their greatest enemy, the Acroyear Navy, he is currently researching how to utilize the highly advanced energy science of Micro Earth.
M-174 Tsuyoshi
1. October 1977 2. Underground at the Futatsumori Shell Mound, Aomori Prefecture. 3. He possesses the entire botanical archive of Micro Earth as another shard. He treasures not only grass and trees but all forms of life. Tsuyoshi’s dream is to build a utopia that will blanket the entire Earth in greenery.
Translation commentary: the "T" naming seems to me to evoke tetsu, that is to say "iron" like in Testusjin 28. (Update: upon reflection, it probably is a nod to the "T" in "Takara". Also the new surname for the team has been published: Takegami.) Once again these are common modern names in the 1970s, rather than ancient ones of the Jomon era. Command 3 was the apex of the Command line, tying a bit of national pride and history in with the popularization of the UFOlogy craze linking the goggled clay figure artifacts of the Jomon period to ancient astronauts. As such, while I can't really speculate about the specific name inspirations, the sites they emerged from are noteworthy:
Kamegaoka is the site where the most famous "Goggle-Eyed" Dogu (the inspiration for the Command 3 design) were actually found. Mount Osore is famous as a gateway to the spirit world, and the Oyu Stone Circles are often called "Japan's Stonehenge"—frequently linked to UFO theories in the 70s. The Futatsumori Shell Mound is a basically one if many ancient "time capsule" burial sites that preserve organic matter (bones, seeds, shells) that would otherwise be lost to time, obviously the inspiration for Tsuyoshi's botanical records.
I had some difficulty with some of the phrasing regarding what I am interpreting as "embedded shards", so this might be revised later, but the important takeaway is that each of Command 3 holds data preserved from MicroEarth.
When Takara introduced its Rescue line, it flirted with the idea of smaller scale Microman figures. It released a line of wind-up amphibious toys called Rescue Servo. Each toy came with a miniature Microman pilot and tiny cockpit. The figure was strangely packed with the toy in a small cup-shaped depression in the top of the plastic bubble, sealed into it with a circular sticker on top showing an illustration of how the toy can use both the minifig as well as be used by a full size figure. But you can see in the manga panel above that they are indeed intended first and foremost to represent full scale vehicles, not tiny ones.
Each came with an accessory to tow a full scale figure behind it in the water like a diver, all the same. I haven't translated any explanatory text for the scale difference just yet, but will update later should something emerge for an in-world explanation. As long as I have been into this toyline, there's always something new to learn about...
Image sources Yahoo Auctions and https://twicomi.com/author/heronotakashi
Takara reinforced this scale dynamic with a miniature figure inside an "elevator tube" in each Rescue Microman figure capsule, perhaps meant to visualize miniaturizing the figure to this unique alternative scale.
A Rescue Servo helicopter drone also makes up one of the three main components of the Rescue Machine 3-4-5 set, looking a bit mismatched in scale as a result.
About a year later, the miniature scale was used one final time for the tiny Death Marck pilot figure for Interstellar Emperor Death King just before the reboot into 1981's New Microman.
Note: Unfortunately the Death King pilot was misreported as the first and only such miniature Microman figure without the full prior context in a post by an otherwise more or less reliable toy historian on BlueSky, who was disappointingly unwilling to accept a correction I submitted...
Given the rescaling of the small MicroRobots launched in that line, which were originally planned as part of the the original series (and which share similar styling with Death King), it seems likely to me they may have been intending to link this miniature scale to them to give the pocket and pocketbook-friendly MicroRobots a much larger feel (along with their die-cast parts) though that's currently just my own personal conjecture.
It was not these that led to the development of Diaclone, which evolved as a concept before this and completely independently, based on other past interviews with the staff, alongside talks I have had with a notable Japanese native toy historian, who immediately shot down my old pet theory about such being the case. I'm always happy to stand corrected when it comes to these matters and learn more!
It is much more likely though that the Microman development team may have been compelled to explore this scale in their well known inter-company rivalry with the Diaclone team (which also had led to the Giant Robot Base-inspired design for Punch Robo).
The newly established Inch-Man scale would also get explored around this time in the short lived Combination Warrior Blockman line, sold abroad as Robotech Robo-Links by Revell/Joustra as part of their 1980s toy and model license deal with Takara...
And just lately Takara Tomy lately seems to be expanding further into this particular scale format beyond Diaclone into other licenses...
You can spot the tiny pilots riding the servos right in the second cut of this commercial:
This isn't really a question but you've closed DMs so I just wanted to say that the video I made about the Diaclone Reboot is finished now. I did of course credit you, and thank you again for allowing me to use your translation! Tumblr doesn't allow links in questions apparently but I'm Droyer22 on youtube as well if you want to look it up.
Thanks for the attribution and heads up way back when. I didn't mean to close DMs but Tumblr is giving me some issues...
Hi! i just found this lovely archive; i was looking through your Microchange posts and found that the links in your post "GanguStars presents Missing Microman: Chameleon Goods Protos & More" no longer go anywhere - do you have any idea if there's a way to access this information?
Sorry, I'm not sure, he closed his blog a long time ago. I might have the info saved though so I will try to look into it when I get a chance to fix broken links and such later (hopefully).
Chapter 6 is taking a bit longer as it wasn't fully polished yet. I'm also debating continuing to translate the sound effects past chapter 6 to help speed along the new translations. I can always go back and add them later if folks prefer it that way, but I think it will be easier for me to get these out as it will reduce manual transcription time as I have to enter them by hand (OCR can grab most of the rest of the text). Let me know in the comments or on Facebook if you prefer the sound effects translation, or won't mind if they are skipped, at least in favor of getting more chapters done potentially sooner.
I am providing the transcripted Japanese text for all these raw scans to make it easier to tell which line is which for both readers and text replacement in any future scanlation efforts, as well as to give transparency for my reading as translation is always open for interpretation due to language nuances and cultural differences. It's also why AI manga translations aren't a good idea, at least not until an AI exists that understands the full extent of cultural, linguistic, and visual context.
That might or might not be so far off, but for now it's extremely questionable at best and outright offensive garbage at worst.

あなたたちはフォボスたちを アクロウイルスに感染させ逃亡させる必要があった You needed to let Phobos' team escape after their infection by the AcroVirus.

A Microman Club translation. With humble gratitude and appreciation for Yukiko’s translation support and Tomoyoshi’s original scans from Quanto Magazine in 2005.
Originally started as a project for the former Micropolis Embassy Yahoo Group.
This is the long delayed continuation of sharing our translation of the uncompiled, twelve chapter 2005 Quanto Magazine publication. The first three scanlated chapters from over 20 years ago (has it truly been so long?) were previously linked here.
Having set the precedent with the Zero Zero translation appendix, and recognizing that I have neither the time nor realistic capacity to do further full scanlations any time soon, I will simply be uploading "raw" Japanese scans with text translations going forward, first clearing out some of the old backlog, which includes chapters 4-6 of Theology. This will probably be delayed some by (aside from personal offline time constraints) reformatting issues and corrections--Tumblr seems a bit fussy to post these on. The remaining half of the chapters mostly have very rough translations, so I will try to get those cleaned up and put out eventually once we get past these three, but I may publish some other materials in the interim.
Anyone is welcome to pick these up for "cleaning" and typesetting, but note that Tumblr does compress the images. If interested, though, please get in touch and I can give access to the original scans and any other relevant materials. Eventually I wish to put most of my Microman Club relevant archives into the Internet Archive for public use, and will update here should these files become available at that point.
Three years have passed since the battle between Microman, an artificial life form 10 centimeters tall, and Acroyear, an evil artificial life form carrying a virus. The original strain of the Acro-virus has emerged in Peru, South America. Nurse Linse, who happened to be present, is recruited—all but against her will—into the international special forces organization M.I.C.R. due to her natural immunity to the virus. Paired with the young Microman, Kaito, she resolves to throw herself into the battlefield against the Acroyear as a "test subject combatant."
