can i be potentially a little Too Woke for a second here.... when afo's backstory came out in the anime there were a lot of memes and stuff about how he was evil straight out the womb and whatnot and i mean i thought some of them were funny and i genuinely loathe that man so in theory all afo slander is funny to me... but.

he was not born evil. he's actually kinda like toga. strong quirks impact personality development, and he was born with a quirk to take other's quirks. yeah he hoarded all the nutrients in the womb and ate (?) his mom after being born but like. he wasn't conscious yk like he was a fetus and then a newborn be for real. so you could say he was born with a self-serving predisposition, but that doesn't make him inherently evil. selfishness is a human trait. and if he was inherently evil, we couldn't actually hold him accountable for anything because it implies he had no choice, he was just born that way, he literally can't help himself. no one is born evil.

then on top of that are the circumstances to which he was born. quite frankly the fact that he and yoichi survived a week after birth is insane. they were newborns alone under a bridge with no parents and no one to care for them. NEWBORNS. it's kinda difficult to develop empathy for others when you've been in survival mode since birth, i fear. yoichi could do it bc 1. he's a different person and 2. he had his brother taking care of him. yoichi depended on afo, afo depended on himself. from what i understand this is kinda how personality disorders like aspd (which is extemely stigmatized and already talked ab as if it made ppl evil btw) develop. a dangerous environment teaches you that you have no one but yourself to protect you, so your brain latches onto that and even when you're "safe" you can't really hold space for others cause it was never modeled to you and it goes against your survival instincts. in the comics they read, the demon lord was strong and powerful while the heroes were always struggling against him, so of course he wanted to be like the demon lord. if everyone's afraid of you, no one can hurt you.

if the twins had been born in a safe environment with parents to protect them and all, afo would've probably still been naturally self-serving but that wouldn't have made him evil. he would've just been different the same way toga is different, and that's okay. obviously, even in the circumstances he did grow up in, he could've become a good person. sure. in the end, he had his choices to make and he made them. but he's not inherently evil. he's a human being, and no human being is completely evil and irredeemable.
