You Still Have Time to Be That Person You Always Wanted to Be

You can still dye your hair canary yellow. You can still get that nose piercing you always wanted, or that shoulder tattoo, even though your mom might disapprove. You can still save up for that backpacking trip in Europe.

Sometimes the house won’t wait, or the job, or the significant other. But sometimes you don’t have to let them wait either. Legend has it that on an island in Australia, fishermen catch the biggest pearls in the world. They come out dripping, blackened with salt and seaweed. The shopkeepers bargain for the best ones, the smoothest ones, the ones with a blush of pink sinking into the white bulbed bodies. They place them like geodes in their shops, on their counters, in their displays, in their windows. But the ones that sell the best, the ones that customers treasure the most, aren’t the biggest or shiniest ones. They’re the smallest, roughest, most unpolished ones. The ones that still wear a faint coat of silvery grey dust no matter how hard they’re scrubbed, the ones that have crevasses and cracks. They’re the most loved because the water never wore them down, never smoothed them into a perfect sphere. They fought against the streams and won.

You still have time to fight against everything that’s in the way of you becoming who you want to be, too. You don’t have to have everything all figured out, or to have your entire life polished and ready and smooth and flawless. You can have as many sharp edges or mismatched pieces as you want, whether it’s that yellow hair or that piercing. It takes a long time for any one pearl to become perfectly formed, and even when it does, it might not be the most valuable or the most happy. If you fight against what everyone wants you to be and fight for who you want to be, you might find your own place in the world.

So wear those fishnet stockings or quit that one job you hate, or break up with the boyfriend who only ever wants to eat Lunchables and watch TV instead of spending time with you. Don’t listen to the people who warn you that you’ll regret your tattoos when you’re older, or the people who tell you to “settle down” while you still can.

There’s always time. There’s still time and there always will be.
