it really is a shame that once a musician gets big enough they sort of have to become more distant from fans. just logistically. like even the physicality of graduating to bigger venues where the people in the back row have to watch you on a screen and barricades and security escorting you through crowds and not being able to do nice things for fans because at a certain point the fandom devolves into fights about fairness and favoritism and the way you can’t even really have a conversation with anyone who has been helped by your music because they are being ushered through a meet and greet line and probably can’t really see you as a person anyway. thinking about how wanting to make and share art to connect with people over shared emotions oftentimes leaves people feeling lonelier than before.

it’s like…you have the money to make the projects of your dreams now. you make that album/write that song/film that music video/plan the tour you’ve always wanted to (if you’re lucky enough to be awarded the creative freedom to do so in the first place). you package your heart into choreography and lyric videos and tiktoks and viral interview clips and sex appeal and radio edits and people see it and they say you’re a sellout. or they listen casually but never bother to analyze the meaning behind your words. or they consume them in 15 second sped-up bite size pieces. or they analyze your songs but only are interested in who they’re about. you ask them to put their phones down at a concert to share this magical moment with you and they call you ungrateful. then they complain about how they don’t know you well enough.  you meet them after the show and between pictures they tell you how your music saved their life. it’s the 10th time you’ve heard this today. it is an honor to be trusted with these stories to hold onto, but it’s a heavy burden to bear. you are not a therapist. you wish you could give them some of yourself back to even out the scales, but you know it is unfair. a power imbalance. parasocial. there is so much space between the barricade and the crowd that even if you reached your hand out, you’re not sure they could touch it.
