Betty Friedan (1921-2006) is a crucial figure in American feminism. She co-founded and became the first president of the National Organization of Women in 1966, created with the purpose of achieving full equality of the genders.
Published in 1963, her book The Feminine Mystique depicted the typical life of women at the time, and was one of the most important texts representing the second wave of feminism. In 1970 she organized the national Women’s Strike for Equality, demanding equal rights and opportunities. She also co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus in 1971.
The modern hospice movement was spearhead by Cicely Saunders, who opened St. Christopher’s Hospice in 1967. St. Christopher’s, and the hospices that followed, focus on palliative and holistic care for those at the end of life.
