Out and About || Peri & Miguel

“You have to let me introduce you to my sister. You could try playing for her one night.” Maybe his music wouldn’t fit but it had to be good experience if he could try and audition for her. Maybe even play with some of the others.

Paying for their things Peri picked up a couple bags. “Oh do you? I’ve never had to learn how to drive before?” Not if she could fly everywhere. Not that she could fly at the moment.  “Is it fun?”

“Oh!” Miguel exclaimed. “Right, she owns that club, right?” he recalled. Peri had told him about that. By that point, meeting Peri’s sister felt a bit intimidating. HE pictured her as this big, successful businesswoman that would just look down on him.

“I suppose fairies don’t need cars too much, do they?” he asked, grinning. “It is! I like it. It’s relaxing for me to drive in such a tiny town, to be honest. Compared to the big city, it’s a breeze to do it here.”

He picked up the bags and began making for the door. “I actually brought the car here, since I just dropped someone off, if you want to see.”

“Oh really? That sounds cool then.” She was just teasing but now she had found out another fun fact and that was fun. A little piece of fun to hold onto. “One day now I really have to visit so I can try all of these things.” And not the shipped over versions.

Grabbing the snacks Peri nodded. “Looks good to me. Might even be able to have extras.” Peri offered either for himself or for his friends or anything of the sort. Heading over to the cash registers with Miguel. “What else have you been up to besides school though? Have you checked out pixies and what not?”

Miguel smiled. “You’d love it!” he exclaimed as they moved to the registers. The cashier said hello and then their bags began to get packed. They hadn’t bought much anyway, so it wouldn’t take that long.

“I’ve been practicing music a bit more,” he said. “I haven’t really gotten any gigs or anything like that, but practicing is good enough. I’ve also been able to work the Uber a bit more now that school’s out. Oh yeah, I drive, by the way, part-time. I don’t think I told you about that before, did I?”

“I’m good with that.” It wasn’t like the money she had made recently was doing much as she wouldn’t spend it on anything food had to be a good place to spend it, especially on Miguel.

Grabbing a couple last ingredients she nodded toward the snack aisles. “Do you have a favourite soda? Or is that something you have to bring back like your pizza doritos things?” Peri teased gently.

“I know you’re teasing,” Miguel responded, “but I’ll have you know that Mexican Coke keeps using natural sugar so, yes, I’d rather bring them back as well,” he added. It was true, too, but he didn’t want to get too deep into the complex history of the Coca-Cola Company’s use of sugar and corn syrup.

That said, the boy went ahead and picked a few cans of differently flavoures sodas. “Good enough?” he asked, looking at the girl before putting them with the rest of the groceries.

“In case they don’t actually offer any lessons and I’m just getting your hopes up,” he replied. “But, uh, yeah! Yeah, I’m sure he would enjoy someone else’s company who was not me. He probably gets sick of me with how much I go over.”

Florian laughed shortly, too, only his was an awkward sort of laugh that was trying to brush off all the stupidity he was spitting out here. Inwardly he was cringing and wondering how this conversation was still running. 

“Just bring him a strawberry and he’ll warm right up to you, promise.”

“I don’t think he would, I bet he loves you visiting,” Miguel said. Though he didn’t know how and if horses valued human company. He was used to dogs loving him, and so that was his only reference.

“I’ll keep it in mind!” the student exclaimed. “Thanks a lot. I’ll... Uh, I should probably let you work, shouldn’t I? I don’t wanna make you fall behind even more on my account.”

Peri paused at his offer debating it just for a moment in her head. She could go home and be alone or she could go spend some time with a friend. Seemed like an easy choice.

“Only if you let me buy some of the ingredients as well.” Peri explained though gesturing to her sad excuse of a basket of food.

“Pfft, be my guest,” Miguel quickly responded. “All the good food is imported and super expensive, anyway, so feel free to pick something you like and we can cook that,” he suggested.

The boy smiled at Peri. He figured she was going through a bad time, and could only imagine what she oculd’ve discovered. The faint voices in his head contributed with rather morbid suggestions, but he decided to ignore that for now. “And we can take some sodas or whatever, too.”

Pretending to be happy was a lot easier than admitting she wasn’t. But it was Miguel. But there were in a grocery store. Not really a good place to go into that either. But it was Miguel.

“That’s good! Both for you staying too.” He would get to experience the summer and the fun that was Sywnlake if you weren’t at school. As he turned it over to her Peri’s smile dropped shaking her head at Miguel. “Not so good, honestly.”

Miguel’s smirk turned into a sympathetic one immediately, his head tilting to the side slightly.

“Do you wanna head back to my dorm?” he quickly asked, figuring a grocery store truly wasn’t the best place to talk if things were not so good. “I can cook and we can talk about it if you want. I’m not the best but, I mean, I’m passable, at least.”

Florian chose not to think to hard about that rhetorical question because other wise it would remind him of his family’s tradition and it would remind him how much he hated it and how he would never be able to pass that off to someone else because, woo, that’d be a real downer. 

“Yeah, he is, he is. I.., huh,” he looked down at the ground, trying to remember if he’d seen any offers of classes or training. He looked back up, “I’m sorry, I don’t really know. But I mean..I’m sure they do. And uh, if they don’t, I’ll let Astor take you for a ride. As an apology.” 

“Apology for what?” Miguel asked, confused and laughing a little bit. It seemed like Florian was pretty apologetic overall, and reserved, too. He might think Miguel was a tad too much with how much he spoke his mind.

“But yeah, I’ll take your word for it if they don’t let me borrow a horse. I’ll have to become good friends with Astor.”

Peri’s house was pretty much void of any food at this point. She was living off tea and barely any snacks. Which for a body that wasn’t even a fairy it most certainly wasn’t enough.

So a half-full cart later she was staring distractedly at all the options for soup. A very exciting food group to be honest.

Completely in her own world it took a moment to reconsider her name but she still turned to face the boy approaching her managing a small smile when she recognized the face. “Miguel! How was finals? Are they over yet?” She questioned softly.

Miguel smiled back, all in all happy to see Peri was still around. But it was hard to tell if she was actually okay, or how good things had gone. For someone who can talk to the dead, he was terrible at reading living people.

“Este... Yeah! They are officially over,” he added. “I am staying in Swynlake for a while, though. The building’s quiet for once, so I gotta take advantage of that! How... are you? How’re things, Peri?”

Out and About || Peri & Miguel

It was a regular, good old day. It was a weekend and, well, the semester was pretty much over. Thankfully, Miguel was able to stay in Swynlake during the summer holiday, even if he had managed to arrange a visit to Mexico in about a month.

Anyway, he had been doing his best to practice guitar now that he had time to do it and, because of that, he forgot to go out for groceries. See, his mother had sent him an electric grill for his dorm room. He wasn’t sure if they were allowed so it was kept under wraps when it arrived. Now, he was able to cook up acceptable meals that weren’t noodle soup.

The college student was at the grocery store, staring in disgust at the fact that genuine tortillas were being sold in a plastic bag (What the heck?) and at a very expensive price. It got worse when he saw how much chorizo was worth (Imported, my ass.).

Miguel’s food-related depression came to an end when he noticed a familiar figure nearby. He most certainly hadn’t seen Peri for weeks, ever since she announced her intention to look for her mother. He hoped it’d gone well, of course.

“Peri?” he called out, walking over to the female, hoping he wasn’t confusing her for someone else, of course.

He nodded enthusiastically, smiling, because horses were pretty cool, and he agreed that the other should go see them if he wanted to. It was one of the highlights of his life to have the privilege to have somehow befriended, what he considered, a gift to this world. That was probably dramatic, but so be it. His horse were worth the drama. 

For the most part. 

“You could say that,” he said, squinting and looking off to the side for a moment. He had memorized all the textbook cover ups that he could spout off should he ever have a slip of the tongue. This was nothing as drastic, but should the questions press…,”It’s just one of those things. Some people have recipes everyone has to know, some people have a certain song they learn. We have horseback riding. Among other things.” 

“That makes sense,” Miguel responded, thinking about his family and the shoe-making business. It was a family tradition, technically, because everyone was just expected to work there. “I suppose every families have their own traditions, don’t they?”

Miguel put the book down. “I’ll visit the stables, then. Is your horse there? And do they like, let you... learn how to ride? That could be a lot of fun, after all.”

Florian laughed softly, his smile growing smaller as he nodded. He’d not been around the dog for more than a few short moments but what they lacked in size was sure made up in personality which was all that really mattered, right? It had to him anyways. Where his dad had wanted him to chose the Thoroughbred or Appaloosa, neither of which had liked him, Florian had went with the one who had come up to greet him at first sight. 

“Astor. It was, uh, kind of a requirement with my family that I learn. Not that I’m complaining! I’m, you know, very fortunate to have him,” he replied with a shrug. “And, actually, I think the stables are open to the public if you ever wanted to see them.”

“Even your horse’s name is cool,” Miguel said, grinnin gwidely. “I’ll probably visit one day, then! Horses are pretty cool. It’s always been fun to watch them, though I’m curious how it is to actually ride and direct one, you know?”

Leafing through one of the books he’d picked up earlier, the student looked at Florian. “Does your family have some sort of riding tradition? Never heard of that before.”

He blinked, unsure if that was a compliment or if he was resenting him for it, which Florian couldn’t blame him, but then he went on to say he loved it and Florian had to stop himself from making any sound of disbelief. He wanted to tell him that if he really loved it then it was all his. Then Florian could change his, leave town, move on once and for all. The name of the breed made Florian’s eyebrows shoot up. He laughed a little because yeah, it sounded smooth coming from Miguel, Florian wouldn’t even try in fear of butchering it so he just nodded at the dismissal. 

“I, uh, I do actually!” he nodded, smiling genuinely because Astor was really the only thing he liked to talk about when it came to his life. “I’ve a horse, but I have to keep him up at the stables. He’d be kinda hard to miss if I brought him to my flat, or on campus.” 

“Heh, I understand, man. My dog isn’t the size of a horse, and he’s extremely hard to miss. I can only imagine,” Miguel said with amusement. Still, he found it great that people could keep companions like horses in Swynlake. It wasn’t really something you’d be able to see back where he came from, unless you went deep into the rural areas of the country.

“What’s his name? It’s so cool that you ride. I got on a horse once or twice when I was little, but that’s it. It sounds like it’d be a lot of fun to ride them freely though.”

Florian smiled, knowing that he was only being nice because he thought he had done wrong by Florian and was trying to make up for it. That just made him feel worse, to think this guy felt like he had to be nice. Still, Florian couldn’t just out right tell him that.

“I’m Florian Hightower,” he replied, reaching forwards to take Miguel Rivera’s hand to shake. He always hated this part, having to tell people his name, having to give them a name with the face. Then again they could always avoid him more easily if they had both, “It’s good to meet you, too. And your dog. I…don’t think I’d ever seen that breed before? Did he come with you from home?”

“Wow! Fancy name!” Miguel exclaimed, amused by the name. His sounded so common, and literally everyone was either a Miguel or a Rivera or a Martínez back home. He was the epitome of common names. But Florian Hightower? Man, that was what someone would call a knight or a member of royalty! Then again, they were in England, right? “I love it.”

The boy looked out the window to see Dante was still running around. “Oh - Yeah, Dante’s a xoloitzcuincle. Don’t bother trying to say it, I don’t blame you. You can call the breed xolo for short. Xo as in show and lo as in love, heh. Do you have any pets?”

Florian stood and placed the books in his hands onto the truck carefully. He kept his eyes on them for a moment as he thought over the answer to the question, knowing he could never tell the truth. Not to a person he had just met. Instead he just shrugged, and moved on with the subject of the other rather than himself. Even if the words coming out of Miguel’s mouth sounded exactly like his inner monologue on most days.

“No. Well, I mean, not crazy. I understand. Not that…my opinion matters. But, uhm,” he shrugged, smiling. “I’m sure you’ll figure out a way to do both. And hopefully they’ll be proud of you either way. That’s what family’s for.” 

“It matters,” Miguel said quickly. He didn’t like people talking themselves down. Almost instinctively, he corrected them just like his Abuelita often did, even if it really wasn’t his business.

“I suppose so, huh?” the aspiring musician said, puffing out his chest slightly thanks to the boost of confidence his newest acquaintance had given him. He then extended his hand. “I’m Miguel. Miguel Rivera. It’s really nice to meet you!”

Florian’s eyes widened at that because, wow, that was a long way from home. And he had thought moving two and a half hours away was ‘far.’ A whole country, a whole ocean, away seemed terrifying. And freeing. He blinked and looked away at the question of his future plans because, ha, yeah, as if his father would allow him to be a librarian.

“Temporary,” he answered along with a small nod. “I could never make it as a librarian. They’re far too important.”

Not that Florian had any set plan for a job. His plans had no job involved.

“What about you?” he asked quickly after. “England temporary for schooling? Or?”

“Important?” Miguel asked, curiously. “Why wouldn’t you want to be important? That sounds a bit strange,” he admitted with a small chuckle.

As the floor was finally free of books, Miguel stretched and looked around, before focusing on the temporary library-person before him. “Temporary, yep. That’s the plan,” he replied with a nod. “I don’t know if I want to go back, though. I’m not really a fan of the family business they want me to take part in, you know? I wanna do other stuff. But also I can’t really let ‘em down. Crazy, right?”

“Oh, yes, I’ve graduated,” he said, feeling bad for having not explained correctly in order to avoid this. Even though it seemed like the other wanted to keep the silence that was threatening to settle between them away. “But not a librarian, no, I’ve not got the qualifications for that.”

He figured that would be the end of that, averting his eyes down to the book covers and the carpet. It wasn’t though. Which was fine, of course he didn’t mind that the other boy was speaking. He just felt bad that he was having to with Florian.

“I get that,” he agreed, thinking of when he worked in the library at his own University. He looked up, his head tilting a little at what was being implied. “Where’s home for you?” 

“Mexico,” Miguel said. “Before transferring here, I went to the Autonomous National University over there. We had the biggest library I’ve ever seen,” he continued, ordering up books on the car. “I don’t know if it’s one of the biggest in the world, but it might just be.”

With a smile, he looked at Florian again. “Are you looking to become a librarian eventually? Or is this more liek a temporary thing?”

“But…but, I shouldn’t have reacted like. You don’t have to-,” Florian cut himself off then the boy went to start cleaning despite his protests. He watched as the dog took off and frowned. He hadn’t meant to make him dismiss his dog. With a nod in acknowledgement to the comment on his dog, Florian moved to the other side of the mess and crouched down to pick up the books to put them back on the truck.

“I do,” he said, glancing up, wondering why he wanted to know, to avoid him next time he came in? He didn’t want him to feel like he had wronged Florian when it had been Florian’s fault. “I’m usually at the desk, though. One of our page’s called in sick so I offered to help out. I…probably shouldn’t have in retrospect.” 

Miguel kept helping. It seemed like the guy was beyond apologetic. “So, you’re just a librarian or do you study, as well? You don’t look... Well, let’s just say that usually librarians are older-looking, aren’t they?”

It was stereotype, but Florian did look more like a student than a librarian. As he placed books back on the cart, Miguel spoke up again. “I really like this library,” he added, speaking softly. “It’s not as big as the one back home, but it’s very different. I enjoy that, you know?” 

He intended to make the other more comfortable through conversation, considering he appeared to be everything but.
