Romania was a country Elise wasnāt too familiar with. There were hardly any books offered about the country in either France or where she lived in England before she came here, but she was interested to learn. She couldnāt imagine living somewhere that only offered subjects on farming and Romania itself though.Ā āIf youād ever like to read up on mechanics or Victor Hugo or anything else I have, feel free to come by. Theyāre mostly Hugo, but there are some other books you might like. They pass the time very well,ā she replied with a nod, looking up at him with a warm half-smile.Ā
āThe one Iām reading right now is in French, but most of my books are in English. Helps me practice,ā she continued, her arm readjusting to she had a firmer grip on the bag. The weight felt heavier than before, but Elise pressed on with the hope that their destination was close.Ā
The same friendly grin reappeared when he introduced himself, especially asĀ āPuppyā. Elise guessed that he looked like a puppy⦠A big puppy, but a lot of it was in the personality. Still, the name mightāve been chosen for a completely different reason.Ā āWeāll save the hand shake for after the delivery,ā she laughed. There were times she wished she couldāve come up with a code name as fitting as his, but she didnāt see much into herself. Elise simply saw herself as Elise, nothing more and nothing less.Ā āI like your name though. Mihai sounds very pleasant, you look like a Mihai. You also look like aĀ āPuppyā,ā she added, pausing to adjust her grip on the bag again before continuing.Ā
āCanāt say Iām too familiar with this Hugo guy, but Iād be willing to learnā he offered up with a genuine interest. Many things about his upbringing were simple; he lived on a farm with his family, went to sleep under the same blanket of stars his entire life, and made an honest living within his small town; however, Mihaiās mind was far from simple. Maybe complex, or maybe just a jumble of messy wires that connected in a good way, it allowed him the skill to rise in the ranks and become the head engineer that he was today, somehow without ever learning about Victor Hugo.
āWell if itās English youāre practicing, youāre doing one hell of a jobā, he added with a quick nod before their final destination loomed in sight. He moved swiftly to step down his bag before moving to her side and guiding his hands under the strap of the bad to remove the weight from her.
Now it was his turn to laugh, he got the āyou look like a puppyā remark quite often, and took it as a good thing rather than bad. āI get that more than you realize. I got it back in basics, some NCO was giving nicknames out to all of the new recruits and they were more demeaning than anything else. I guess mine was supposed to be that way too, but it backfired a bitā, he added while shuffling various plane parts around the battered tent. It smelled faintly of grease, something he hated but ultimately could not avoid. Swiftly he wiped the dark substance from his hands before sticking one out for their long awaited handshake. ā
solocooper:
āYeah ā but compared to the shit theyāre spooning out in the mess hall, doesnāt take much to qualify.ā
āIsnāt that the damn truthā, Mihai laughed, shaking his head and truly entertained by the man and the shoveling of his own snacks in his mouth. āTell you what through, next time I get some youāll be the first one Iāll call.āĀ

Charles was relieved the drive was over. He hated sitting there, doing nothing, and even for him, there was only so much conversation he could carry on with the driver. The second he could, before the transport had even stopped entirely, he had two feet on the ground with his only bag slung over his back. Heād always travelled light, used to having on what he could carry.Ā
He knew he had to report in, but Charles had been a military man for a while, and he knew the best way to get on the good side of most bases was to help, so he helped unload the transport. With a jerry can in each hand, he turned to the nearest person.Ā āWhere dāyou want me to dump the jerry cans? From the smell ofĀ āem, theyāre petrol.āĀ
Okay so technically all the cans of gasoline that came in today were suppose to be going to the Tanks, but truly Mihai had a solid excuse for needing two cans today and not tomorrow. His new Arvo was just about ready to meet its new pilot and navigate through the stars, but its engine needed to be tested today so he could meet his deadline by tomorrow. So technically it wasnāt stealing. Technically.
āWell most of them are going to your left, so just set them down anywhere you think they wonāt get run over by a jeep. And the rest are coming with me to fuel a thing of beautyā, he bellowed out without a hint of suspicion but with a bit of curiosity towards the new face. Ā
Kindness is often mistaken for softness and let me tell you, friendsā¦.that is a mistake you donāt want to make.Ā
Kind people are not born that way, they do not stumble into it, kind people are forged in fire and darkness and imploding starsā¦they have steel cores. Throw a punch and youāre going to break your hand.Ā
solocooper:
āThese arenāt yours, are they?ā
āThey were. Good little things arenāt they?āĀ

One thing she learned during training was to not hold her breath while carrying something as heavy as this. Still, it was a habit, and God, this wasnāt her best idea. Anything to bond with more of the team though. Elise even almost made it look like she wasnāt struggling too much.Ā
āOf course, donāt worry about it,ā she replied warmly. At the mention of her book, she glanced back to it on the table just to make sure it was okay out of habit.Ā āOh, itās Napoleon le Petit. Hugo hated Napoleon and itās a bit funny to read really. Have you read his work?ā she asked, looking back up at the man beside her while continuing to walk to their destination. At first she wondered how a person could pack so much, but if she were to be honest with herself, sheād do the same if she was strong enough to carry it all. Though most of her bags wouldāve been filled with more novels she had been dying to read.Ā
And just then Elise realized how she didnāt even know who he was.Ā āIām sorry, My name is Elise.āĀ
Mihai made sure to keep an eye on the woman to his left, ready to spring into action if the weight of his pack decided to swallow her whole and potentially crush the brunette. He made a mental note to pack less metal parts next time, but he already knew it was a lost cause. There were just some things, most things, that couldnāt be left behind.
He listened intently when she spoke of her book, secretly wanting her to dive into more detail about the story glued to the pages. āCanāt say I have, schools in the Romanian country side are pretty lacking when it comes to any books that donāt have to do with farming or Romania its selfā, he responded with a light chuckle. There were definite holes in his education, but with his far past average engineering and technical skills, it was hard to tell.
āNice to meet you Elise, and again I appropriate the help. The nameās Mihai, or Puppy, whatever you fancy. Iād shake your hand but weāre almost there and I think that my bag is about ready to attack you.ā
eliseprouvaire:
His reaction warranted a small exhalation of a laugh from her, looking at the bags he was carrying effortlessly. āItās alright, looks like you have a lot to go-ā she noted, walking across the small patch of land to the pile of other bags needing transportation. Wow, they looked bigger than they seemed when he carried them. Still, ever the intrepid, the woman picked one up and made her way to him as quickly as possibly. It was obviously a strain, but Elise had to help.Ā āLead the way, boss-ā she continued, slightly breathless though a smile still shone. Maybe she should be working on her pushups more.
Mihai took a moment to look behind him, not realizing the magnitude of his belongings until she pointed it out. While he already had two large dufflebags attached to him currently, four more were waiting haphazardly in a pile for their chance to be lugged to his tent. āYeah I never really could follow the whole āpacking lightā manifestoā, he added with a shrug and a shake of his head.
Truly his bags were bigger than her, but she seemed determined and he wasnāt one to undermine a person just based on their size or their sex; so he watched her grab a bag with a genuine smile and eventually the two were walking side by side.
āWell thanks for the help, Iām sorry you had to tear yourself away from your book, you seemed pretty in to it. What were you reading?ā, he spoke without a strain in his voice, making sure to glance at her occasionally to assess Ā if she would soon need some help with his cluttered bag. (Spare plane parts werenāt known to be light.)

Thereās a slight huff of amusement at the boldness of the words but thereās no shame for the things she said or the way she said them. Sheād never seen the point in not being upfront and letting people know exactly where they stood when it only saved time and increased clarity in exchanges. It led to fewer surprises and left those who often came into contact with her having some ideas of how to handle her short temper.Ā
āEveryone gets the same fucking treatment. Let it never be said that Iām unfair.ā Her moods didnāt discriminate perhaps with the exception of Costin her words were never tempered. Hazel eyes are still on the task at hand, some sort of stubborn refusal to stop her work just because someone else had decided to walk in. But still she carries on speaking, Glaswegian accent coming out from under the tank thick and fast. āNo jet lag so maybe Iām just the bitch.ā Itās something sheād admit openly, hardly caring what others thought of her so long as she was able to do her job.
Eventually she slides out just enough to take a look at the man and address him. āYou need something or-?ā
Mihai watched the woman with an intrigued smile perched upon his lips and a raised eyebrow to complete the set. Her words were soaked in a bluntness that had the ability to either create a similar and rather hostile response from whoever was on the reviving end, or cause them to shrink away all together. Mihai presented a new option, amusement.
āWell if everyone operated by that belief, I think the world would be a better placeā he chuckled lightly, choosing now to let his entire body be engulfed by the cluttered mechanics tent. There were metal parts, and wires everywhere, not to mention the lovely smell of grease that he despised far too much to be the head of aerial engineering. Contrary to belief, he didnāt enter the tent simply out of curiosity, there was something somewhere that he needed to complete his latest project, and because most others wouldnāt have a large piece of metal or the old battered side piece of a tank gun, he chose to come here.
āI donāt know you well enough to make that determination, but either way Iām never too often in the business of making assumptions. And I do actually need something; the pilots assure me that all of my bags were delivered, but thereās a new Avro Lancaster Iām modifying and its front navigation system seems to be missing. So it looks like Iāll be building another, and mechanics usually have all the shinny toys I need.ā

The air was crisp and only growing colder by the hour as it did as the sun sunk below the horizon. The dying glow from the sun illuminated the small area Elise had occupied for nearly half an hour now as she wiped off her tools with a wax coated cloth and read her worn down copy of Napoleon le Petit which laid flat on itās spine on the table beside her. The girl took occasional sips from her canteen filled with coffee instead of water and soon noticed someone carrying quite a load of cargo. It was nearly an immediate reaction- her getting up from the table and quickly heading over.Ā āHere, let me help-ā Elise spoke with her French lilt.
Mihai had long forgotten about the weight of the bags he carried across the soil; instead he was more focused on the ancient air of people watching. Greedily his eyes darted over the landscape, pinpointing individuals and fruitlessly trying to make out their backstories. It was a French accent flicked against his eardrum that broke the trance. Long strides came to a stop and he glanced over at the woman quickly abandoning her project and bounding towards him to help. A slow smile crept upon his face before he spoke. āSāall right, I donāt do all those push ups for nothing.āĀ

Her feet had barely touched the Belarus soil for more than thirty second before long strides had quickly taken her back to the mechanics to critique the work that they had done in her absence. The suggestion of leave had been met with dragging feet and a clenched jaw with the brunette so unwilling to return home. Back in Glasgow it didnāt matter that dozens had turned to her when her father had been unwell or how dozens more had flocked to her when her brother had been called to war. Back home she was just a girl with a talent for cars but here she got to make a real difference and that was why she always had more time for the machines that she worked on rather than the people that made up the rest of the unit she was a part of.
The whisky that she always had on her person and her penchant for dishing it out every now and again meant that she was never short of company when she wanted it but right now the various tanks and trucks that sheād poured all her energy and effort into were calling out to her. So Len had taken the quickest route she could to the mechanicsā tent, immediately sliding herself under the nearest tank to start working again right way. Hearing footsteps approach not even mintues in, the brunette sighs before speaking without hesitation or a softening of tone. āUnless youāre bringing me more work or appeasing me with some scotch or even both, I donāt want to know.ā Thereās a little pause given as she tightens a bolt before she speaks again with her accent thick and harsh over her words. āIf itās not mechanics related go take yourself on a nice fucking long walk because otherwise I donāt want to know.ā
The air here was... different, fresh even. For once the stench of death was not hanging so densely over their heads. One inhale and not be transported back in time to where fire burned relentlessly and the ripping sound of souls being snatched from bodies could not be heard. No, Belarus was fresh and just waiting to be tainted.
Of course, however, Mihai could not stop himself from walking towards the mechanics tent, the plethora of parts (no matter how badly they smelled covered in grease) were singing out softly to him, beckoning him forwards with ideas and innovations of the future. He has spent his time off wisely, but the inventions never stopped flowing through his brain like the water of a newly cultivated stream. Never the less, he wasnāt expecting such a rude welcoming to be belted out after only daring to place one foot inside of the haven.
āDo you speak like that to everyone despite knowing who they are yet, or is the jet lag just a bitch?ā

BIOGRAPHY:
THERE IS A WAR OUTSIDE, COME SEE THE BULLETS FLY.
Reporters and politicians would say that the second world war began in September 1939 with bullets flying and countries falling to their knees; but for some, the battle had begun much earlier. Mihai Balan was born in the dead of winter, seconds after another child, Viktor Balan, twins. With this simple biological fact it was easy to understand why the brothers were attached at the hip. Identical in physical terms, the only thing that made them different were their minds. Mihai was quick witted impulsive, able pick apart the problem and put it back together within seconds. Viktor on the other hand was a thinker, taking his time in decision making to make sure that every possible option was considered.
The Balan family lived a modest life on in the Romanian country side, tilling the land and raising cattle to get by. It was a meek existence but the family was a lively one, always seeing the sliver of light in a raging storm. When it seemed the boys were no longer boys, and instead men needing to start their lives and take wives, their father faced an untimely death and their mother welcomed a new life into a time of grief. As Iris Balan took her first breath, Alexander Balan took his last. It was both a joyous time and a forlorn one, but love eclipsed the pain and time continued to move forward.
To make extra money for the family Mihai turned into a gambling man, betting his wages on his own strength and speed. Boxing was his muse and winning was his goal. The bruises and lacerations that decorated his skin like tattoos never seemed to dull his enthusiasm for life, and the Balan name became a well-known one in their town. Ā Somehow, with battered and often fractured hands Mihai still inherited his fatherās keen sense for mechanics. Intensely he would listen to the purr of engines and radios, diagnostics firing through his brain at a mile a minute before a conclusion was reached. A bang here, a loose screw there, or a complete rewiring all around, Mihai could fix any machine set before him and eventually grew bored of fixing and began building instead. At first his contraptions were crude, and with time they became elaborate and something worth selling. He would spend hours designing new things to help the family become more efficient and eventually his talents spread to neighbors and the town, everyone wanting a genuine Balan contraption.
Life seemed alright for the Balanās, but the whispers through town could not be ignored. Hitlerās name was already a household one and his power was like a slowly heated bath. The world would already be boiled to death before they realized the catastrophic evil and unimaginable circumstances were at their back doors.
DO YOU HEAR THE BATTLE CRY?
No one tells you how artificial bullets sound. Maybe if Mihai had known the real thing could sound so fake, he would have acted sooner. It was only the screams of neighbors, the shouts of surprise and pain that woke the Balan family on June 3rd 1939. Darkness had become illuminated by reddish orange flames licking their way up the walls, smoke and soot clinging to their lungs and igniting their throats with an incomprehensible pain. The brothers found each other instantly, weaving through the shadows with a spiritual connection guiding them to one another. The spoke only briefly, devising a plan of action before vanishing back into the smog. Mihai would go find Iris and Viktor would find their mother before meeting outside at the barn.
Somehow Iris was still asleep when Mihai found her. At only four years only she was easily scooped up into his arms and carried outside where clean air awaited them both. Chaos had erupted around them, the town lit ablaze created an imitation sunrise in the distance with firing guns creating the thunder. It seemed like an eternity had passed yet Viktor has still not appeared. Desperately Mihai wanted to charge back into the crippling structure he once called home, but he dared not leave Iris alone, and those crashes of thunderwere only getting closer. For once, a decision did not spark instantly in his mind. Mihai could stay and go looking for his mother and brother, or he could accept the high probability that they were dead and instead take his sister and run. No one tells you how your heart can physically break.
Hours turned into days and eventually days turned into weeks but still they dragged on. With Iris clung to his body, Mihai soldiered on through the country side determined to get her to safety. He was the only thing she had left, and in turn she was the only thing keeping her alive. The summer months meant that the elements were not currently working against them, so hidden groves and grasslands became their hotels for the days, and the stars became their guidance at night. At this time there was no one to trust, the world had turned a blind eye while physical evil manifested its self in the form of a man and in the form of seemingly innocent citizens going about their lives. It was astounding how similar Naziās looked to mothers and grandmothers, fathers and brothers. And though Mihai could easily blend into the Aryan race, compassion was the foundation of his being and now only vengeance filled the cracks in his heart.
Sometime in late July, solace was found. The Balanās had found their way into Greece, a local family opening their home to the destitute travelers that had agony in their eyes. For Iris, she adjusted easily, taking a liking to the generous family and trusting them with only the innocence a four-year-old could muster. For Mihai, the process was slow. He laid wide awake at night by Irisā side, their small amount of belongings ready to go just in case chaos came to steal another life; but it never did. This family, the Rossoās had somehow escaped the troubled times and had no malice in their bones. They heard Mihaiās story and felt sorrow in their hearts, offering the one thing they desperately sought, security.
Only now that his sister had a new place to call home could Mihai address the rage pent up within his soul. His family was everything to him and within an instant they were ripped away. He became withdrawn and vengeful, aching for a way to curve the destructive feeling within his chest. The call to arms was his new beacon of hope. With hardship he left his sister with the Rossos and a charred picture of the entire Balan family. He vowed to return to her no matter the cost.
Though Mihai was eager to shoot, to hear those artificial bullets slice through the flesh of the wicked, his engineering talents did not go unnoticed. With the need for new technology and advanced weaponry, Mihaiās skills were harnessed by the army and did not go unnoticed. He quickly climbed the ranks though no amount of stars and stripes could satisfy him. The routine was numbing and familiar, mechanical parts transported him back to the Romanian countryside with memories sending him into a trance as he crafted new machines out of nothing. It allowed him to somehow shut out the carnage and anarchy the world had erupted into, a gift not soon wasted.
Eventually his grease covered hands would feel the violent vibration of a machine gun within them. They needed men to fight, and Mihai would cure the vengeance in his heart one bullet at a time. His carnality and skill are what landed him within the ranks of the Shadowed Commandos, his loyalty is what would earn him his place.
