In the movie Always Be My Maybe, there was one main topic that really stood out to me. That topic was fighting fear. Fear can really change a person and how they feel and see everything. It closes and locks the door of opportunity and greater things. In the beginning, the movie shows that the answers to what you seek are right in front of you. When Marcus and Sasha grew up together, they were always the answer to each other’s problems. When Sasha was lonely because of her parents never really being home, Marcus would invite her for dinner. The scene when Marcus’ mom passed, Sasha comforted him by asking him to eat out. Your community and roots are what make you you and what makes you complete. The history that goes behind this, is that in the beginning Sasha’s parents were always out late working. Hearing the message her mom left her, she had a very strong accent. What I got from that is that her parents might have been the first people to migrate to America. That means Sasha’s parents had to work their asses off to provide and support. Although, the fact that her parents were never there for her, still was not okay. As Sasha grew up, she began to lose sight of her roots and tried to seek happiness in things that were not for her. Just because she had money, a stable business, and was with someone who was a good business partner not lover, she thought that her life was complete and that it could not get any better. Sasha was wrong, that asian stereotype of being the most successful in your division does not equal fulfillment and happiness. For Marcus it was the total opposite though, he stood by what he had. He did not want anything more or less. He believed he had everything he needed, but his quality of living just was not it. He was smoking everyday, had a busted ass car, his room was a mess, and his band plateaued. Going back to the theme of fear, I believe that what Sasha and Marcus had in common, was that they refused to seek change and true fulfillment. They believed they had everything they needed already, even though deep down they knew things are not going the way they wanted them to, they were never really happy. That fear blinded themselves from seeing that the answers were right in front of them. Stick with your roots and you’ll be happier. Like the scene at that chinese restaurant they went to where Sasha believed that place sucked because that’s how she wanted to remember it. Well Marcus reminded her that it was very good, traditional food. Your roots should not be neglected. When Marcus learned Cantonese, he got some sort of benefits for it. What I personally learned from this is that your mind can either be your biggest enemy or your strongest ally. I personally really needed to realize this right now or have this message hit me, because through this whole quarantine thing, I have begun to overthink more. Not being able to go out and distract myself from my problems have really forced me to embrace it and learn to deal with it.
