Project #4: Exquisite Corpse-The Art Assignment

While scrolling through all the possible assignments of what I could do for project 4, I found many that seemed interesting and fun to do. But this one stuck out to me. For this one, called Exquisite Corpse, we had to get a group of people (though in these times not too many people) and work on one drawing surface. The only catch is that we had to hide our drawings without the others knowing what it was. They were supposed to add on to yours. This was an interesting concept to go at and the idea of seeing where a persons mind goes when you ask them to add on to your work is very interesting. The artist, Hugo Crosthwaite, has an awesome idea in collaborating others into his work. I decided to do mine with my family. My brother did his based off of light fractals. My mom did hers on her favorite character from Bambi, Thumper. My dad did his on a plant box he plans to make. It was interesting to see where their minds went to add on to the covered drawings. Their minds went to completely different routes. All in all, this was really fun to do and it was nice getting my parents and brother to collaborate with me on this.

“Approaches To Postmodernism”: Reading and Response #4

While reading through this, I found many things that have stuck out to me. I had no idea where to go with postmodernism, but reading this article has given me a good idea on where I’d like to go with it.

Some things that stuck out to me were the many ways you can take this. One I found interesting was the “Rejecting Originality” section. I found it really interesting that post-modernists think of artwork as texts. I also like how they mention that they hold the possibility of being original. The artwork is an influence. 

Another one that was interesting to me was Jouissance. It was really interesting to read that there are artists that put pleasure and enjoyment into their work, that have sexual overtones. The artwork is supposed to give the viewer pleasure and self-awareness.

I also like appropriating. It is something that is very interesting to me. It is the idea of borrowing or “stealing” another artists design or work, and transform it into something that might provide new meaning to what they want to convey. They change it up and use it for their own work. Following on to that, it seems like “Simulating” is a synonym for this type of work. They both have the same meaning in copying another artists work. It changes meanings of things to add on a newer, more relevant, or different meaning altogether.

Recontextualizing is also interesting to me. It takes a familiar image, and changes it up. This one reminded me of that painting of an original piece, where dogs were sitting around a poker table playing cards and smoking. Other mock paintings have been made from this idea, which represents recontextualizing perfectly. There are also the many mock images of Mona Lisa. One of the ones popping in my head is made by Fernando Botero, where she is re-imagined in his own style.

Lastly, there is “Confronting the Gaze”. I found this really interesting and as I was reading it, I didn’t think about “the male gaze” being “readily apparent in many mass media productions”. What I had thought of was the statue of Aphrodite of Knidos, one of the first nude women sculptures in Roman art, and how her gaze was supposed to look away from the viewer while her body was openly displayed with very little coverage. Considering that people didn’t like it at the time because it was scandalous and the male form was highly appreciated, I found it very interesting that ideas have changed but the concept hasn’t. The idea of women's bodies in media being displayed as sexual or erotic in Hollywood films, hasn’t really changed from the past. This statue of Aphrodite was later put in her own temple, and the face was used for coins.

The Fear We All Have- Project #3

There is a lot of fear in the world right now with everything that is happening in the world and it can be easy to be afraid and feel all alone. For my project, I represented the fear we all probably have right now. I incorporated another project I worked on of a 3D model of a wire heart and I made this a pretty big part of this video. The fear is leaving it’s host(me) feeling alone and sheltered until finally there is someone to take away this fear. However, the fear still lives on.

At first it was difficult to create this project but I began to realize that I should bring what’s happening in our world into an artistic sense. Since the biggest emotion everyone must have is fear I felt like that was the perfect chance to show that. I enjoyed playing with different lights and colors in this piece to really enhance the emotion of fear and mess with the mood of the video by changing it from black and white to color. Additionally, I purposefully made the heart harder to see because even though you can’t really see it you know it’s there the same as with fear. The heart served as a way to both be a symbol for fear and also a way in which I can use two different mediums(3D and 4D).

This is really cool and I like how it’s related to what everyone is most likely going through right now. I also like the merging of two mediums.

Exercise 3: Perfomance Art

I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do for performance art. I’ve never really been comfortable acting things out and I didn’t want to make myself uncomfortable for this project. While this project was supposed to make the artist present, I wanted to be anything but present. It was a battle trying to figure out what to do. But then I saw my paints, my endless variety of ink, and my white gel pens. I thought that since I wasn’t comfortable acting things out, why not do something that I’m used to.

This lead me to making a video of my painting process. I took a video of myself painting the background of this tiny piece, and included the finishing product after I added the forest spirit. I wanted to record myself doing something I enjoyed, painting something I enjoyed. Which lead to the Studio Ghibli film, “Princess Mononoke”. In a way, I guess this painting can relate to how well the environment has been doing considering no one can go anywhere because of this pandemic. Animals are returning home and the air pollution has descreased, if only by a little bit. There are definitely no forest spirits wreaking havoc trying to find their head, that’s for sure.

Project 3 - Performance Art

The idea of this performance was inspired from one of my essays about the importance of images in media release, such as articles from magazines, newspapers or blog, regardless of print or online. The essay concentrated on the way visual elements attract attention easily, tell stories effectively and covey messages quickly, rather than a box full of text. Through this performance, I decided to demonstrate the idea under my perspective, particularly when I am a design student, about how I usually decide what article I should read just by its visual appeal. As the adage tells us, a picture tells a thousand words.

Apart from that, since we are confronting this crisis, I think this project is going to be interesting for us to have different perspectives and experiences with performance art. Especially when our performance did not happen in an ideal condition like in art galleries, we would have various perceptions when seeing each other projects.

The project includes a series of photos and a short video of the performance. Enjoy! ☺️

Exercise #3: Richard Sierra’s Verb List

For exercise 3, I chose to fold, to cut, and to hang from Richard Sierra’s Verb List. They really stuck out to me and I decided to do a paper snowflake with them. I think it turned out okay. My verb list is below. I took some of the words I enjoyed from their list and added it to my own.

The Artist Is Present

Marina is a very interesting artist. I found it very interesting to see how involved and-yes I’m going there-present she is in her work. She shows her work through her “demonstrations”. Her performance art. I also found it interesting how this documentary showed how others view her work. They often question why she puts her body through her work (like when she laid in a star that was on fire and she passed out). I found myself questioning why she was putting her body through these things too, like why she would whip herself. I liked her response to a question being that she has never heard the question “why” in why is what she does art. She is really bold in what she does and I think people are taken aback by it, and don’t know how to react to it, making their first question be that “why?”

Reading #3

Roselee Goldberg’s paper on performance art was an interesting read. I especially found it interesting when she explained that performance art can be used to break down categories of art and use it to point art in new directions. I never really thought of performance art in that way, for it isn’t exactly a medium I’ve explored. I like how it is used to express ideas and moods in a different way than other mediums. It’s made me curious about what I can do for the third project. 

I liked learning a little bit about the history of performance art. I like how the origin of performance art is unknown, but it’s known to express ideas and moods throughout history. 

There’s many ways to go about performance art. Whether that be unclear in its meaning, or obvious in what it’s trying to project.

Project #2: Video Art

Title: “IDFC, Where Are We Now?”

I really wanted to do something somber for this project. I wanted it to stick out in ways that would normally not make things stick out. The dull colors and the music I chose to add on to it, hopefully made it seem like there was a loss.

I chose for the imagery, Pink Floyd’s “Where Are We Now?” The beginning of their video is symbolic of two people lusting after each other. They go up in flames and end up burning out faster than expected. I thought this went really well with what I wanted to project.

For the music, I chose an instrumental of Blackbear’s “IDFC”. I interpret the lyrics of it-even though I didn’t include them-as someone who hasn’t accepted the fact that the relationship they are in is over. They want a false sense of security that they are still in love, even if one of them has to lie about it.

Video Art 5 of 5

This scene in Tommy is about him tripping on acid. It’s a scene that catches your attention and has great imagery. I like how this song was performed in the movie. The rest of the movie seems almost as wild as this scene.

Video Art 4 of 5

“Tommy” by The Who is a wild ride of a movie. It’s another movie by one of my other favorite bands. Like “The Wall” there are many artistic scenes throughout this movie to match their music.

I love the collaboration behind this music video. It adds a lot of elements and puts them together, showing parts of the movie within it.
