She barely remembers the impromptu decision to escape Hershey and leave all that sheâd ever known behind for good. Sheâd just come home from her class one day and something inside of her snapped. Within an hour, she had packed what mattered most to her into a bag, alongside an envelope containing all of her savings, and left. Three days, she had driven practically non-stop across the country, her only goal to get to her brother. Four months later, here she was. Homeless in a dangerous city, all alone.
Just a 1k drabble about Maddie and porches inspired by this tiktok Iâm really hoping was filmed on the porch of Madneyâs Murder House. TW: Domestic Violence
Maddie is pretty sure sheâs lived on her porch since she taught Evan how to ride his bike. Every day she gets home from school, heâs already waiting in the driveway with his helmet on and the biggest smile on his face. Their parents said he is only allowed to ride when someone is watching him, and of course they couldnât be bothered to do it themselves. So, every day when Maddie gets home from school she settles onto their small porch, back leaning against the front door of their house as she watches her little brother ride his bike up and down their street. Itâs hard to focus on her homework while Evan is calling to her, begging her to look at how fast he can ride or how good he can turn or how quickly he can stop. And as much as she knows she needs to put all her energy into studying so sheâll be ready for high school next year, Maddie canât help but look up when her brother calls her name. Evan needs to know at least one person in his life wants to see all the amazing things he can do. Thatâs why Maddie sits on the porch for hours every single day, squinting at her notebook as she writes her English paper in the waning light or swatting at mosquitoes while she works out a math problem, because it makes her brother feel loved. Sometimes when her brain canât handle another math problem or understand one more paragraph of her science textbook, Maddie lets herself wonder if anyone would ever love her enough to sit on a porch for herâif someone would love her enough to look up when she calls their name just because they want her to know sheâs important to them. Sheâs not sure she deserves that kind of love sometimes, not as long as sheâs lying to Evan about Daniel, even if it is to protect him. Still, itâs hard not to dream that maybe one day someone could choose to love her like thatâŠthat maybe one day sheâll find herself worthy to be loved at all. Maddie never gets too far into her daydreams, though, before Evan is squealing her name and sheâs drawn from her dreams to her reality. And every single time she hears the glee in her brotherâs voice as he rides past their house on his bike, Maddie knows that even though being loved like that one day would be nice, sheâs pretty sure sitting on her porch and watching while Evan thrives is enough for her to be happy.
                    __________
Maddie leans her cheek against the front door of her house in Hershey, the coldness of it soothing against the pounding of the forming bruise. She canât believe he actually did it. Doug locked her out. Heâd been warning her that if she kept getting out of bed in the night then he was going to lock her outside, but she didnât think he was serious. Thereâs almost a foot of snow on the ground, and the neighbors might see and ask questions. But when she got out of bed at 3:00 AM to pee because of a UTI, he had punched her in the face when she was leaving the bathroom. The next thing Maddie knew, Doug was dragging her down the stairs and forcing her out the door, his admonition that maybe some time outside would teach her to appreciate the warmth of their bed hissing in her ear before she heard the deadbolt lock. Her bare feet are burning against the icy concrete of their small porch, the only part of their yard where the snow has been shoveled away. Shivering against the cold, Maddie folds her arms over her chest wishing sheâd worn more to sleep in than one of Dougâs old t-shirts. The wind picks up, and Maddie bites back tears knowing they would only freeze on her cheeks. She canât walk to a neighborâs, and she knows trying to get in through the back door or the garage will only anger Doug further. So, tugging the t-shirt lower on her thighs, Maddie squats on their porch, hoping the large bushes Doug insisted on planting will block some of the wind as well as the view of any of the neighbors until her husband decides sheâs learned her lesson and lets her back into their home.
                    __________
The relief is instant when Maddie turns onto her street. Itâs been such a long shift. Sheâd had to talk a mom through doing CPR on her two-year-old, and there was still no update on the childâs condition from the hospital. By the time Maddie is pulling into her driveway, sheâs sure her heart is about to burst from her need to hug her daughter, but itâs nearing 10:00 PM and Jee-Yun has long since gone to bed. As her car slows to a stop, Maddie notices the porch swing is moving, her boyfriendâs familiar silhouette illuminated by the dim porch light. Maddie almost calls out to him before she notices the outline of their daughter in his arms. It feels like she floats across the walkway between her car and the porch stairs, Chimney meeting her at the top with a sleeping Jee-Yun.
âHeard you had a tough call today, and the night is nice, so I thought weâd meet you outside.â Chimney easily transfers a sleeping Jee into Maddieâs arms. âFigured youâd want to hold her as soon as you got home.â
Closing her eyes, Maddie inhales her daughterâs scent as she holds Jee-Yun close, the little girl nestling further against her in her sleep. She doesnât want to go inside yet. Going inside means sheâll have to go lay Jee in her crib, and Maddieâs not quite ready to let go. âChim, wanna sit on the porch swing with me for a little while?â
Arm wrapping around Maddieâs waste, Chimney gently pulls her against his side. âThereâs absolutely nothing I want to do more right now than swing on the porch with my girls.â
Day One - An exploration into âwhat ifâ something else had happened or a different choice was made. How would that change Maddieâs character arc or story?
What if Maddie never married Doug, and Buck had convinced her to leave him at the altar on their wedding day?
Sheâs actually doing it, sheâs actually leaving him. The realisation shocks her, as had the words âletâs get the hell out of hereâ when they had fallen from her mouth merely minutes before. She shouldnât be doing this, Doug is going to be so mad when he finds out and the thought of how heâs going to react terrifies her, but itâs that sinking feeling in her stomach that reminds her exactly why sheâs doing this. Because sheâs terrified; of this, of the thought of getting married and being tied to him forever, but most importantly, sheâs terrified of him. And despite everything, she knows that what sheâs feeling isnât right.
Her heart is racing as the taxi pulls into the bus station and she canât help but look over her shoulder, wondering if Doug has realised by now. Heâs got to, the ceremony was about to begin when her brother had stumbled into the dressing room and begged her not to get married, and if things had went the way that they were supposed to, she would already be down the aisle and exchanging her vows with the man she loves, or used to love, she thinks.
Sheâs not sure. This whole situation is so new and overwhelming and her brother must be able to see how badly she is shaking, because heâs quick to slip his hand into hers and squeeze gently, forcing a smile at her.
Itâs going to be okay. It has to be, she tells herself, because if sheâs wrong about the feeling in her gut that had made her agree to her little brotherâs pleas for her not to walk down the aisle, then she will be able to go back to Doug with no issues, and he will understand and forgive her. And if sheâs right about thisâŠwell, she thinks she already knows the answer to that. She thinks she already knows the truth, and maybe she always has. Her parents may have been bad parents, but they never hurt her; not physically, at least. They may have said their fair share of hurtful words, but not once did they raise a hand to her and she knew, the first time that Doug had done it, that it was wrong. But it was so easy for her to tell herself that it was okay, that she deserved it. Because sometimes people do that when they care too much. They overreact and they feel bad about it later.
Those were the same words that she had told herself every time that she had been hurt in some way, not just by Doug, but by her parents, too. She can remember telling her baby brother that exact thing when he was five years old and had crashed Dannyâs old bike, their parents arguing about it downstairs. Those words were like a security blanket for her, an excuse she used time and time again. But she doesnât think that she can excuse his behaviour anymore, and she wonders if Evan knew that.
âItâs for the best, you know? HeâŠhe wasnât good for you, Mads, a-and I couldnât sit and do nothing about it. You and me against the world, remember?â Heâs only sixteen years old, and yet, he seems so much older than that, a lingering sadness behind his baby blue eyes that she never wanted to see. Sheâs his big sister, his protector, and sheâs spent all of his life trying to fulfil her last promise to Danny - to love Evan and keep him safe. The first part was easy, so easy, and she doesnât think she could change anything about him that would make her love him even more. Heâs perfect and always has been ever since he was first placed in her arms when she was just eight years old, waiting excitedly next to Daniel after winning the game of rock, paper, scissors that theyâd had in the car to see who would get to hold him first. Sheâd tried her best with the second part of their promise, she really had. But she doesnât think it was enough, because he is standing next to her, arm around her shoulder and helping to guide her through the staring crowd over to the ticket kiosk, protecting her instead of the other way around.
She knows heâs right deep down. He never did like Doug and Doug didnât like him, either, but there was always a part of her that had hoped it was just jealousy of the other for being such an important part of her life and taking her attention away from them. Deep down, she thinks sheâs always known that there was more to it than that.
She would choose her brother over her boyfriend in a heartbeat, and both Evan and Doug knew it.
Before she even knows it, Evan is passing her their tickets and guiding her over to one of the bus terminals. Thereâs a coach parked up and people waiting, and she wonders whether the universe is on their side and this is how things are meant to be, because they are right on time and within minutes, they are seated and pulling out of the station. She lets out a breath she didnât even know she was holding, finally able to relax a little now that theyâre leaving. Theyâve done it, sheâs actually done it, and she chuckles pitifully at herself. âWhat are we going to tell everyone? Theyâre going to find out; mom, dad, Doug - how are we going to explain this to them?â
He sighs and she can see his nose scrunch up as he thinks. Itâs almost ironic, she thinks. Sheâs his big sister, he should be coming to her for advice and answers about his life, and yet, here she is asking him what she should do. âDonât tell them anything. Theyâll work it out by themselves, just - it should be up to you if and when you let them know, and itâs up to them how they react to that. But no matter what happens, you broke free and Iâm proud of you. WeâllâŠw-weâll figure it out together, okay?â
âYou promise?â She sniffs, trying so hard to hold back the tears that prick her eyes when he sticks his pinky finger out at her, as sheâs done to him so many times before now.
âI promise.â
Chimney Week Day Two - Chimney as a father
1400 words of Maddie being a complete simp over dad!ChimneyÂ
.Â
Maddie could easily make a list of all the things she loves about Chimney. That list could be a mile long and half of it would probably be a gushing mess of inside jokes and words sheâd never let their daughter read. But thereâs so much to love about him, most of the time itâs overwhelming because she never truly believed that this kind of love could exist outside of movies or books.Â
Of all those things that she loves about him, though, watching him be the most wonderful, loving dad to their little girl will always be the thing she loves the most. Itâs the most constant, unwavering of reasons that survived the depths of depression and a lingering fear that whilst she wasnât good enough for their daughter, he always would be. Every day, she thinks âthis is it, this is the most it is possible to love another human beingâ and yet, somehow, that feeling remains; that feeling of falling in love all over again as though itâs that first realisation every single morning. Because she gets to wake up next to him and she gets to raise a child with him, two children with him, sheâs reminded when both of his hands immediately drop to her stomach, disturbing how deep in thought she had been.Â
His lips are gentle and his voice is soft as he whispers sweet words to their unborn son, not noticing the way Jee-Yun is looking at him. Maddieâs fingers move immediately to brush through his hair, grinning at their daughter as the four year old sits on the end of the bed and just observes the scene in front of her. Just a moment ago, Chimney had been sitting next to her, carefully painting her tiny fingernails, reassuring her that the impending addition to their family was only going to create more love and not take anything away from their terrified four year old.Â
If there is anything in this world that Howard Han was born to be, itâs a father. Maddie has known that for longer than sheâs known Jee-Yun was a possibility. He is everything a father should be and so much more - heâs kind, attentive, loving and safe. There is nothing he wonât do for Jee, there is no question too big or adventure too great. Bringing up a child with him has been a privilege, itâs healed her and him in more ways than either of them can ever truly comprehend but she watches him dancing around the living room with Jee or she watches him braid her hair, or paint her nails, she watches him sitting on the floor for hours to play a game of make-believe with her.Â
More than that, she watches the way their daughterâs face lights up when he walks into the room and she listens to the adoration and excitement in his voice with every baby Jee and her heart beats a little faster and her smile grows so wide that it starts to hurt every single time because this is how raising a tiny human in this terrifying world should feel. Safe and warm; as though the outside world canât touch them when they are in the four walls of their home.Â
âDaddy?â His hands and his head lifts from Maddieâs bump to look at the little girl, a pensive look on her face as both her parents wait for her to say whatever it is that she needs to get off her chest. Maddie has never really known life as an only child, and as a child, it was all that Chimney knew. So this confusion and fear that Jee-Yun is feeling is something neither of them feel able to relate to, both of them constantly seeking advice from the people around them, pouring through internet articles and books trying to make sure that their daughter feels comforted and included. âYouâll still love me when baby brother is here?âÂ
oooh what about a drabble about them going out on their first official date after getting back together?
This is terrible but thank you so much for the prompt <3
.
They have a child together and they live together, she loves him and she knows that he loves her. And yet, somehow, despite knowing all of that, sheâs nervous. Jee-Yun is having the best time with her Uncle Buck and she feels safe in the knowledge that for tonight, she doesnât have to worry about their tiny human. The pain of leaving her behind will always be there, it was there every single time Chimney would either pick her up from her apartment or she would leave her at his. But she has to remind herself time and time again that this is normal. Being just Maddie and Chimney again is normal, even when itâs only for a few hours.Â
Still, itâs hard not to remember sitting across the table from him, feeling her heart sink the moment he mentioned dating other people. That was when she knew that the very idea of seeing him with another person would break her, just as the thought of being with anyone other than him disgusted her. She had spent so many years of her life dreaming of a world without Doug, imagining the kind of life she could have had without him. But whenever she tried to imagine a life in which she didnât love Chimney, it felt impossible and painful. And thankfully itâs nothing she ever has to think about again.Â
Itâs with a smile that Maddie looks up at him, quickly reaching for his hand over the table because the thought of going another second without feeling his skin against her own, makes her feel empty, somehow. Tonight had been his idea, truthfully, since she had stood in front of him and made a promise she has every intention of keeping, she had been more than content snuggling up on the couch, watching a movie and eating takeout. But Chimney wanted to do something special, something outside of their apartment and she just wanted to make him happy.Â
âUh, Hen and I went here a few months back, when it first opened and I thought about how much youâd love it here,â Itâs hard to think of all the time they spent apart but sheâs grateful for it, too because now she appreciates the little things more than she ever did before - the way he always chews gum (her first go-to in the morning is coffee, his is the packet of gum he keeps next to his bed), the nervous little shuffle in his seat he does when he talks about those months when they couldnât be them anymore. There was so much she missed but sheâs done punishing herself for that. They have an entire future carved out in front of them and she canât wait to see what it holds.Â
Maddie nods her head, âI came here with Buck, I thought the sameââ Although her brother is good company, there is no one other than Chimney she would rather be sitting here with right now. Thereâs a karaoke bar next door and she wonders if Chimney has formulated the same plan in his mind as she has in her own. Sheâs confident that he has because, for the first time in too long, they are on the same path, heading in the same direction, at exactly the same pace. âYou look really handsome tonight,â Itâs not the first time she has uttered those words since he walked into the bedroom in a dark blue suit and she had almost told Buck that he would have to take Jee out of the apartment for a few hours.Â
She briefly remembers a time when they were happy before everything had come crashing down around them, smirking at him as her thumb brushes over each of his knuckles, adding on, âsexy, too,â which is enough to earn her a raise of his eyebrows, and that lop-sided grin she adores so much. âWe should do this more often.â She knows that itâs easier said than done - between work and relishing in perhaps their second (maybe third) honeymoon period that she doesnât think should ever end, and raising their beautiful daughter together, painting the town red isnât high on their priorities. But she knows that her brother would never say no to spending time with his niece and she knows that she and Chimney need this alone time. Itâs just a few short hours where he isnât a firefighter and she isnât a dispatcher or they arenât being the responsible parents, they arenât two exhausted people falling asleep on the couch at the end of the day. They can just be two people who are in love, who need some time to just be that and nothing else.Â
âWe should. Once a month, me and you. We can even make one of those date night jars I heard Karen telling Hen about,â Heâs incredible, in every way itâs possible for another person to be incredible and itâs as though sheâs falling in love all over again at the excitement in his voice and just the way he looks at her. She missed the way he brushes his thumb against the back of her hand, she missed him smiling at her the way he is right now and that mischievous spark in his eyes that always lets her know exactly what heâs thinking about.Â
âMaybe we can throw in some not safe for work ideas,â His foot taps against her own when she utters those words and she can practically feel the excitement reverberating from him. The fire burning between them is like nothing itâs ever been before - theyâve been happy, theyâve been completely and utterly head over heels in love before, they have taken that time to get to know each other in every single way possible but this all feels so different. âI really love you, you know?â Those words are enough to temporarily distinguish that burning excitement that had been in the pit of her stomach, her head tilting to the side as she just stares at the man who would truly do anything for her and who she would do anything for. She doesnât want to know how it feels to go another day without him by her side, no matter what the universe wants to throw their way.Â
Itâs with a gentle tug on her hand that he brings it to his lips, peppering soft kisses against each of her fingers, âI really love you, too.â He once told her that he would say that enough for the both of them because she wasnât ready to say those three words out loud just yet but now, all she feels is complete freedom when she tells him. But also disappointment because it never feels enough to truly decipher exactly what it is she thinks of him or how she feels about him. She has just to hope that he knows and that he feels it.Â
Their hands only pull apart when the food is placed on the table, their own mini version of buff-Friday, because neither of them could decide what they wanted to eat, so they ordered everything. Their first ever tradition that was theirs and only theirs to have. Chimneyâs foot rests against hers, as though they have to be touching at all times and not in the possessive or jealous way but just as a reminder that they are here, together; that this is real, âHow would you feel about karaoke after this?âÂ
Maddie grins, nodding her head, perhaps a little too eagerly, excitement rushing through her once more, âI would love that.âÂ
