Monument de la Renaissance Africaine-- the tallest statue in Africa and our 1st stop on the MSID orientation bus. Controversial because the funds required fit the scale (160 feet tall) and though it was paid and built by N Korea, could the money not be used to hire some of the many job seekers in Dakar? Plus the baby is pointing (with apparent hope) towards the West instead of the rest of the continent.

The sign above the door says children in French-- it’s where slave traders kept kids on the Ile de Gorée. The maison des esclaves is a UNESCO world heritage site that’s been preserved to remind people about the other 28 slave posts on this small island alone. Hordes of sharks used to circle the island because so many bodies were thrown into the ocean. And that’s just one of the many ways slaves suffered so that we could grow the economy.

Then we had a stunning, fresh lunch, went for a swim in startlingly clear waters, and finished with coconuts back in Dakar.

So it turns out I have a beautiful head!

This sauce was SPECtacular. No idea what was in it (except beef, potatoes, and carrots :)

slaying, that’s all

So this was Tabaski, the Senegalese celebration of Eid al-Adha, where your family slaughters and eats sheep (#s depending on personal wealth). I really enjoyed it and was lucky enough to help out! Unfortunately I ended up very nauseous and didn’t get to eat any of the meat :/

We had real long breaks for lunch between classes
