David nodded. “I do think I’ve chosen right. I mean, I’m a traffic cop practically right now, but I’m on the right path, y’know?” It was true, though. His career was one of the few aspects of his life he felt content in. He was proud of his job, despite the negative connotations associated by it. “The internet scares me, honestly. I think Reddit is as far down the rabbit hole as I’m willing to go.” He took a cursory glance across her van, “You planning on sticking around in Town?”

“A lot of kids I knew took the wrong path. Drugs, alcohol...you do what you love. That matters. So yeah, right path.” She smiled warmly at the other young man. They were making the best out of their life, in their own way. Some would alwys be stuck in their hole that didn’t allow any way out. “Reddit is pretty tame, the deep web is where shit goes down.” Following his glance, Milo shrugged her shoulders lightly. “I might. I like it here. I mean, I could get used to this.”

The brunette looked up, blinking at the request “I— no. Sorry. I don’t even know what that means” she shrugged before returning her gaze to the book “Not drawing. I’m— sketching. It’s a dress. I think.”

“Alright Henry the fifth...” Milo muttered, brows scrunched slightly that she didn’t know what a hotspot was. Maybe doctor who wasn’t a lie after all and she was from the past.. “Huh? You think you’re draw— sketching a dress? How can you not be certain of what your hands are doing?”

Watching the whole scene play out before her, she couldn’t help but laugh when the man trying to help the girl was getting scolded. As much as she wanted to help, she really didn’t want to help as Kara wasn’t really the type of person to help pick things up off the ground. Walking closer to the two, she watched as the man handed the girl her harddrive and scurried off. “Poor guy,” she commented.

“He had it coming.” Milo scoffed as she tugged the harddrive back into her pocket, The only people even offered to help out were to dig into others personal stuff, maybe find something juicy. That’s what everyone was about these days, a few exceptions included. “Don’t touch personal hardware..unless they want you to. Pun intended.”

“...It’s a good question though. But I’d still go with white and black spots since the white part is usually more prominent than the black and I really don’t know why I fucking care so much about cows. They down if they’re ass deep in water.” She grimaced slightly, it was really the only thing she could remember from biology class. And something about mychro-something. “Because they’re Mondays. Eliza looked away from her sketch book up to the horizon as she tried to find some inspiration, her gaze instantly connecting with someone else’s. She raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow as she awaited for her counterpart to say something. When the other failed at it, the brunette sighed. “Can I help you?”

“You don’t happen to have any ...hotspot with you?” She asked after a moment, looking up from the device in her hands to the woman with the sketchbook. “What are you drawing?”

For now” Bethany snapped her book shut as the girl spoke to her “I’m sorry, but what is the internet?” she inquired curiously, suddenly dawning an poorly done Russian accent. “I’m from the year 3821 and we don’t have this thing called the internet. The pigmen don’t allow anything but bacon making.”

“Thank...god? The goat? Santa Claus? I mean, no. Don’t thank Santa Claus that’s just creepy. I didn’t fuck Santa. I think.” Furrowing her brows slightly, she cleared her throat in an attempt to make the whole conversation less...awkward? “On a brighter note — Bacon is great. Wait, is that a Russian accent? You see Ivan, when motherland needs you, you abandon sanity.”

He’d genuinely never thought of it like that. He spent so long pushing thoughts of his past down, down, where it couldn’t be seen by the naked eye, that he’d never had time to really process what his life had been so far. He spent so long staring at others and wishing for their lives that he hadn’t bothered to improve his own. “Obviously you’re right,” He laughed, “If I’d known you 7 years ago, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’d be off having the time of my life.” He sighed, and carried on with her stuff.

Milo had spent so many precious years of her life trying to find people that left her that at some point, she decided to stop. Had deleted everything known about her in any and every database, erasing every bit of hope they may come and find her instead. And she was fine. Has been, was and will be. Getting up, she took the box from his hands with a chuckle and shoved it somewhere under her bed. “It’s never too late to start living. Find what you love, put all your heart and strength in it. Something that challenges you. For me it was programming...or rather said hacking. It’s somewhat...you know, there are no algorythms I can’t crack, no boundaries that keep me in place. I like that. Besides, the internet holds more secrets than you may know..”

Especially with someone who understands. “Nice to meet you.” He laughed, glad to finally know her name considering he’d basically told him his life story by now. “It’d answer questions, y’know?” He looked up at the sky, “They could be anywhere, anyone, I could pass them on the street and have no idea.” He looked at her, “I don’t care who they are, I just wanted to know…” Why I’m not good enough, he wanted to say, but didn’t. “I want to know why they left me.”

“Answer questions, fuck up the picture you may have of them. Want them to have. We’re free, unwritten books right now. We’re not bound to how good or bad our parents were to us — we don’t know them. Sometimes you have to view things in a better light than it may seem. For your own sake.” She knew how he felt, what’s on his mind and how that can easily pull you down. Depress you. Anger you, for not knowing something as simple as your heritage, the place you come from, for not being allowed to be loved when you needed it the most. “Some questions will always be unanswered, either we move on or it pulls us down into that nasty dark pit full of shitty thoughts.”

“Actually,” He thought, dragging a box to the van, “The worst feeling is when you know someone’s treating you differently because of where you live.” He shrugged at her question, “I think if they’d cared at all they’d have at least given me some sort of reason, like in a letter or something. But nope. How about you?”

“Or pity you, you know that look people give you when you tell them where you live or grew up. As if it’s helping the situation.” Milo, although more amused than anything, had found a new appreciation in the guy by now. “I’m Milo, by the way.” She quickly added, knowing she had skipped that part earlier. “Would it really have changed anything though? You knowing they may not want you, or may do but don’t have the finances to support a child? I don’t know, nothing either. I tried to find them, but only got so far. No database has anything about them.”

David’s eyebrows raised at her answer. He didn’t expect that. He didn’t really know what to expect. Everyone before Town just knew, and no one at Town had a clue what David’s life had been like. Well, no one but the girl opposite him now. “I… I think it was seeing kids complain about their parents.” He looked at her, but quickly looked away again. “You know? Like ‘oh my god, I hate my mom, she won’t get me a PlayStation.” He sighed.

“God — the complainers, yes. People don’t fucking appreciate what they have, all they do is whine and complain. They take whatever is thrown at their face for granded.” She sighed softly as she walked over to a small chair that was covered in laundry and pushed it down. “Do you know why they left you there?”

Lunch break was one of Beth’s favourite parts of her workday, second only to the end of her shift. In a comfortable silence the petite brunette sat on a community bench reading her book, only being drawn out of by the presence of another human “I’m trying to figure out the proper procedure to sacrifice virgins to the goat overlords who are trying to end all of humanity as we know it” she said simply, her eyes landing on the figure “Are you a virgin? I need twelve according to this”

Stopping mid chewing, Milo slowly turned his head towards the woman that just, quite possibly, said the most terrifying thing she ever heard someone say in a voice so calm. Or hilarious. Both. “I usually say people should get online more often and enjoy the internet in it’s whole beauty...but in your case...I think you really should...stay far away from people.” She muttered hesitantly, eyes flickering around to see if anyone else heard the woman just say that. “I’m not a virgin, stay away from my guts and blood.”

David was taken aback by the question. Normally, he kept the past exactly there, where it belonged. But he couldn’t lie to the girl when she asked him a direct question. “I was… uh,” He gave her a half smile, “Parents abandoned me. Grew up in a home.” He avoided her eyes.

Her usually so cocky grin softened at his answer. Now she understood what he meant by ‘being trapped in the past’. And honestly, no matter how much time she spent in her van or doing whatever she liked — the tiny voice in the back of your head will always be there. Telling you to quit the act, stop pretending like you know who you are. Kids like them were trapped in their own head. “That...sucks so bad. What did you miss the most?” She asked quietly “Simply that..place to call home or something specific? For me it has always been the small things. Seeing friends with their parents, them telling their kids they love them and wish them a good night.”

“I don’t really talk to many people,” he laughed, deciding to be at least a little bit open with the woman. “Okay, hi, I’m David.” He held his hand out to shake hers. “That’s such a great idea. I had kind of a… trapped childhood, and I’ve never really gone out of my comfort zone in that way.” Too much, too much, he thought.

“Neither do I. I prefer ..things that don’t talk back. Like my laptop.” Milo took his hand with a smile, giving it a quick squeeze before she tugged both of her hands back into the pockets of her jeans. “Trapped childhood? Why so? “ She asked bluntly, head tilted aside.

She has never belonged anywhere. Milo has, since she can remember, never had a family or a place to call home. Growing up in an Orphanage, she had to learn how to get through life at an early age and fought her way through everything that was thrown at her. Her name was chosen by Milo herself, since she has no indentity to call her own, no heritage or knowledge of her parents that could help her know who she is. It gave her the opportunity to be whoever she wanted to be, to be free, to find herself in her own way. And for Milo, it was through the keyboard of her laptop. Which she stole, but that’s a different story for a different time. Milo has always had a good hand with technology and soon found a way to include her hobby and passion with a job. Not a legal job, she never wanted to be stuck in an office — not that they’d take a high school drop out in anyway. No, Milo went along, sells intel, documents, leaks what’s not supposed to be seen by the every eye. ‘No more lies. Freedom of knowledge. Freedom above all.

“Cynical isn’t always bad. Keeps you out of shit...usually. Just don’t follow my advises, I’m horrible at giving them. If your view works for you — you’re not naive. We all have to figure out how to get along, nothing is right or wrong when it comes to your own opinion.” Milo shrugged smiling, brushing a wild strand of dark hair behind her ear. “Uh, with great power comes a ...shitton of stuff you don’t understand. And your uncle would have to die. And your parents. No hero is a good hero without their parents being dead. The other stuff Spiderman can do is cool, but also...spandex. Imagine having a wedgies in a spandex suit.”

David laughed, “I’m really not paranoid. Pretty much the opposite of that. Sure, I’m insecure and kind of fucked up, but other than that I’m totally easygoing.” He internally face-palmed. He was so not used to social interaction. He picked up a box of clothing, and another when he realised how light it was, putting it back into the van. “So you live in here?”

“And a little bit awkward, aren’t we? It’s cool, people can suck sometimes. You should work on your introduction though, you know, telling people you’re insecure and fucked up isn’t really what gets the job done.” Her hand patting his shoulder briefly, Milo could only nod and throw a shoe on top of the box he was carrying. “Yeah, pretty cool huh? I wanted something that...doesn’t cage me. I know it’s not exactly a palace, but it’s a different feeling when you know you could just go wherever you want to. Not having to leave anything behind.”

Luis listened to her talk and only nodded his head every now and then. “Yeah, I’d probably lose my shit too if someone stole my laptop,” he said almost absentmindedly. He looked around the van and at a few things she had out. “Wait, what?” he asked, as she suddenly caught his attention. “What, no, I don’t do or think that,” Luis responded. He moved away from her stuff and shoved his hands in his pants pockets. 

“That’s like having a parent take a deeper look at your browser history. Or the NSA.” Milo muttered quietly as she picked up books, clothes and other random pieces of what she owned off the ground around him. A loud snort escaped her lips— or throat. Probably nose too, as he looked up like a deer caught in headlights. “I’m just saying, hands off the private stuff. I wasn’t saying you randomly go ‘round for some tits and grab whatever the hell you can. Relax. You’re not going to jail for molesting people, congrats.”
