having a meet cute with maddy was the highlight of your shift!
there we times when maddy really hated her job. like now, when she’s playing glorified babysitter for a grown man.
his head fell against the head rest of the car seat, glasses pushed all the way to the top of the bridge of his nose, a groan tumbling out of his lips "i have the worst headache ever... your perfume is too strong can you open the window? ugh i cannot deal with the bright light—"
“i told you to keep your drinking to a minimum,” she sighed, her fingers tapping away at her phone “what did you expect to happen?”
“i need a drink.” he declared and maddy rolled her eyes at him.
“just wait till we arrive, you can get a drink there.”
“fuck no, i want something right now or i’m not going.”
her tapping halted and she narrowed her gaze at the petulant manchild. she weighed her chances of ignoring him but with the way he was acting guaranteed an oncoming headache of her own.
“fine.” she conceded with pursed lips, she tapped the drivers shoulder to inform him they should stop by the nearest cafe or diner “what do you want?” she turned to dylan, an unamused expression planted on her face.
“i don’t know a fucking iced vanilla latte?”
“sugar? that’ll make you more sick.” she deadpans.
“get me water with it then.” he dropped his head back onto the headrest and shut his eyes. maddy opened the car door, muttering ‘asshole.’ as she exited the backseat and walked into the cafe the driver dropped them off at.
she quickly sent a message informing the waiting party they’ll be a little late due to dylan ‘feeling a little under the weather’ before pressing send as she pushed open the door to the quaint establishment.
you stood up from your position where your folded arms were resting on the counter as you stared outside the window due to the slow day you were having. the arrival of a new customer caused you to straighten up, your customer service smile ready as you watched a woman walk in, her head tilted down to stare at the words on her phone.
“hi, what would you like to order?”
the woman stopped just before the counter, turning her phone off as she stared at the board hung above you. you felt your eyes widen when you caught a glimpse of her face. she was stunning. there was no other word to describe her. or maybe there were since breathtakingly beautiful were next on your mind. you subconsciously fixed your hair, your smile turning sweeter when she finally looked at you to relay her order.
she tapped her fingernails against the wooden piece, a small smile on her face as she spoke “hi, can i please have one iced vanilla latte, one iced caramel latte, and a bottle of water?”
“of course!” you nodded, tapping away at your devices screen to input the order “would you like a regular or large?”
“and for the milk choice, would you like almond, oat, semi-skimmed, or whole?”
“anything else you’d like to add?”
“no thank you, that’ll be all.”
“would you like to pay with cash or card?”
you positioned the card reader towards her, she tapped a black card against the screen which read a total of $15. you hummed, returning to the screen as you continued to ask “sit in or takeaway?”
you felt a hint of disappointment bloom in your chest which was weird because you just met the lady for the first time in your life. you recovered quickly to add “can i have your name, please?”
“maddy,” she said and quickly clarified “with a ‘y’ at the end.”
“perfect,” you responded and finally looked up to give her a grin “i’ll call on you when your order’s ready, you may take a seat if you’d like.”
you catch a dent in the skin by her lips, a cute dimple peeking through which causes your heart to flutter. she thanks you and takes a seat by the window, her attention immediately captured by the notifications popping up on her phone.
you turn and grab two large plastic cups, placing them on the counter and began preparing for her drinks by pressing some ground coffee into the portafilter, you hook it onto the machine and place a glass mug beneath the head to drip the coffee. you grab the syrups to circle the rim of the cup before you navigate your way to the freezer and scoop out lots of ice to dump them into the cups. when you notice that the coffee was done, you poured an equal amount into the cups and added the milk as well as pumps of caramel and vanilla syrups.
“one iced caramel latte and one iced vanilla latte for maddy,” you called. she rose from her seat and walked over to you “here’s your water as well.”
“thank you,” she smiled and grabbed the cup holders.
“no problem,” you tell her and you mean it. just as she’s about to walk away, you stop her by saying “i don’t know if i will see you again so i just wanted to tell you, you are so gorgeous.”
maddy’s smile turned bashful as she batted her lashes at you “thank you, you’re very pretty too, and this definitely won’t be the last time i visit.” she left with a wink and that’s all you could think about for the rest of the shift.
