Do people really care that much about appearing smart?

Of course they do. There's this conception that the way to impress others is to show off talents, positive traits, or what people believe to be "cool". Appearing to be smart is one way to do that. Obviously, the person is sizing you up, thinking that the smarter they are the better they'll be in your book. Or they're trying to match up to you. Finding your intelligence intimidating. 

You know when a girl is interested in you, they all of sudden like the same things you do. Or they appear to be some fucking "perfect" woman in the first couple of months. Then you know.. the real colors show.
