Too lazy to write down in a journal so typing is faster. I’m also supposed to be studying for my second scribe shadow shift but whatever. I can’t get this shit off my mind.
I’m honestly tight as fuck that this shit happened to me but I also feel so stupid
I was at a Starbucks in Oakland yesterday and someone snatched my laptop and ran out the door. I was instantly stressed as fuck because all my school and work shit was on it and I had things due the next day at work. Little fucker had a fucking get away driver too. I was so in shock cause this shit doesn’t happen in upstate NY. I would have never thought someone would be ballsy enough to steal your laptop as you were typing on it. Upon further research, I realized that this is something very common in the Bay Area. I wasn’t aware of my surroundings and I guess was sitting at a prime location for that to happen. I was near the door and across the way from where people picked up their drinks so when the thief was standing near my table, I didn’t think much of it because many had before him. What shocked me most was how young he appeared to be, probably 13-15 years old... probably never taught better and thought it was cool to steal something for some quick cash. I chased him to the door but no further because he was already at the car. What fucking pissed me off was the smug grin on the get away driver’s face as he saw this teenager running towards the car. The getaway driver was probably in his 20-30s. Probably just another typical successful snatch and run. My laptop, a MacBook Air could easily resell for at least $500. It was brand new and I only had it for not even half a year and took good care of it. I guess I just question if they really needed the cash... like maybe because they needed to make rent or their family was starving on the streets. Those aren’t out of the question for the Bay Area although that would still never justify stealing from someone. ALTHOUGH, I really question because the getaway car was a brand new shiny Honda SUV with dealership plates. That shit pissed me off... although definitely a sign of thieves that knew what they were doing.
I recently moved to the Bay Area to do a post bacc program at Berkeley. It’s hard to make friends because its a continuing education program so most people are from the area so they already know people. It also mostly consists of night classes so people are tired as fuck by the time they get to class so I don’t blame them that they’re there just for class and then want to gtfo. There just hasn’t really been much to like about this area or the program... except that maybe with the Berkeley name on my transcript, I’ll hopefully get into med school in two years. I’ve decided to tough it out because the backlash I would get and shit from my family wouldn’t be worth it if I decided to move back to NY to finish my classes. I’ve also signed a lease until Spring 2020... LOL starting in January so there’s that. I am hopeful though because I will have two housemates and the landlord is allowing me to bring my cat. One of the biggest struggles for me moving out here has been making friends, both because of lack of free time and the way the program is set up. There’s just not much opportunity although am hopeful because I just started a new job. Thinking back to when I started at Bing, I didn’t really have too many friends first semester either but that changed once I got roommates the following semester.
There’s a lot about the Bay Area that I really fucking hate, and so far not too much to like. I feel like I don’t have enough time to do shit and the stress of not getting after medical school after this program with the amount of debt I’ll be in is stressful as fuck. I do believe this path is what I want though and I’ve told myself in the past and now that if I don’t at least try to get into medical school, I’d regret it for the rest of my life. Is it always better to try and fail than to never try at all? I do miss my friends and family a lot and I’m super home sick. In my mind, moving out here was going to be fun, full of new friendships, meeting people with the same goals but I guess things rarely are as good as you imagine. I was just extremely lucky for AmeriCorps that that was an environment conducive to that.
ALSO, what’s pissing me off is that I am constantly expected to keep my apartment spotless so my aunt can show the place at a moments notice. Although this sounds so simple, it puts a great deal of stress on me. Some days, I don’t even have time to eat.
Also, I realized I ugly cried like Kim Kardashian when she lost her diamond earring when she jumped into the ocean in that one episode when their family was on vacation when that guy stole my laptop which is embarrassing as fuck. Yes, I was stressed as fuck because of the information on it but like in retrospect I could have kept my composure. Like Kourtney said to Kim when that happened, there are starving children in this world yet here I am upset that someone stole my laptop, something not necessary for survival, a mere luxury item.
Friendly reminders to self:
- I am lucky to have this opportunity.
-I am lucky to have parents that support me.
- I am lucky as fuck to have gotten that scribing job out of potentially 40+ candidates.
- I am lucky to have a really good friend who lives down the street from me and I greatly appreciate her.
- I am lucky to have a car.
- I am lucky to have a great support system even if they are not physically here with me.
- I am lucky I have such great housing this semester and for the rest of the semesters I am here.
As my mom said, no one’s life is ever all good. Bad things happen but you just have to remember how lucky you are.
